Stupid question about pronounciation

Settle it for me please, because I've heard it both ways:

Is Goudey pronounced "goo-dee" or "gow-dee?"

NonSportDaniel 04-05-2016 08:02 PM

I always thought it was Goo-day but I don't know why.

caramelcard 04-05-2016 08:04 PM

It's Goodee in Canada.

ullmandds 04-05-2016 08:06 PM

I've always said goodee... But I hear a lot of people call it Gowdee?

pherbener 04-05-2016 08:09 PM

I've always said Goo-die but I hear a lot of people say Gow-die.

mechanicalman 04-05-2016 08:16 PM

Oh goodness. I've poured my heart and soul (and wallet) into collecting both the 33s and 34s, and if I have been mispronouncing the set name all this time, that sucks.

bobbyw8469 04-05-2016 08:17 PM

Gow-Dee

CurtisFlood 04-05-2016 08:21 PM

Most of the dealers I know call them Gow dees.

frankbmd 04-05-2016 08:27 PM

So it rhymes with Howdy Doody. Take your pick.

brianp-beme 04-05-2016 08:30 PM

How aboot Gow-Dee?

How-dee, it's Gow-dee.

I have never heard it differently, but then again I am not Canadian (it's 'aboot' time I revealed this fact).

Brian

trdcrdkid 04-05-2016 08:42 PM

I've always pronounced it Gow-dee. It never occurred to me to pronounce it Goo-dee, and I don't remember ever hearing it pronounced that way.

JollyElm 04-05-2016 08:53 PM

Put me in the Gow-dee camp. It would never in a billion years occur to me to pronounce that word "Goo-die."

Rookiemonster 04-05-2016 08:58 PM

GOW -DEE

How about bo-men or bow -men ?

It was always goodee in my head until I went to a few shows. Everyone else I've heard pronounced it gowdee.

tonyo 04-05-2016 09:44 PM

I always pronounced it goo-dee. Then I heard a few years ago that Gow-dee is correct. I still can't bring myself to say Gow-dee, so I have given up henceforth will say and think goo-dee, even if it isn't correct!

I DID however, start pronouncing Lajoie as Lah-zhway instead of La-Joy. Once I heard it pronounced on GOTT audio version. Lah-zhway sounds much better than La-joy IMO.

RCMcKenzie 04-05-2016 09:49 PM

I have a Louisiana "French/Cajun" uncle called Goudeau. The French pronunciation is Goo-doh. In French, I believe "Goudey" would be pronounced "Goo-day". For what it's worth, I call the cards "Gowdys" I also say "La-joy" instead of Loo ah shoo weh. Here in Houston, the San Jacinto Monument is pronounced "Sann juh sento" instead of the correct Spanish "Sahn Hah Seen-toh" And San Felipe road is pronounced "Sann Phillipy" if you are a native Houstonian. FWIW...Rob

The-Cardfather 04-05-2016 09:59 PM

What about Bowman?

I've heard it pronounced like "Bauman" and also like "Bow (like the ribbon on a gift) -man". I've been collecting since the 1970s and I still don't know which is correct.

I've always said Bow (like the ribbon on a gift) -man. Even if someone told me Bau-man is correct, I doubt I would change. (just like goo-dee for me)

TheNightmanCometh 04-05-2016 10:09 PM

Being from Southern Louisiana I automatically want to pronounce it Goo-dee... even though I've always heard Gow-dee. I understand that Cajun/French thing.

I've always heard it Gow-dee as well.

For the first time ever in a youtube video of all places I heard someone pronounce it bow (same sound as cow) man. I've always heard it bow (like a bow tie or bow and arrow) man and when he said it the other way it sounded so stupid to me and I actually remember saying to myself "OMG moron, that's not how you say it, stop saying that!" LOL

as for Lajoie...I've actually always pronounced that lah-zhwah (both vowel sounds like when the doctor tells you "say ahh")

Cobb and other anglophones might have pronounced it that way, but like most French names, they pronounced it incorrectly.
Nap's roots were French-Canadian, and here in Quebec the name is, and always was pronounced in two syllables not three... It's Laj-waa

Kiki Cuyler pronunciation

I hate bringing old threads back to life, but I saw a post recently about the mispronunciation of Lajoie in the American Greed thread and then...during some research on Kiki Cuyler I came across his bio in SABR and my mind was blown.

Kiki Cuyler's nickname rhymes with "eye-eye" and his last name is more like "Kyler". So it's Kai Kai Kyler. All this time I thought it was "Key-Key Cooyler". How he got his nickname is described in the first paragraph of the link below. Awesome!

It took me six months of living in the islands just to be able to pronounce the street names but eventually I was able to get my mouth around words like Anaehoomalu, Kaaawa, kamanawanaleia and da kine. The trick is to bust it up into syllables which isn't so difficult once you're familiar with some basic pattern recognition in Hawaiian words. Kee-hay ma-ha-na o Maui a-kay-o. Easy as pie. The Sardinha boys were local studs.

Fballguy 08-26-2017 10:22 AM

It's Gow-dy...Rhymes with Howdy.

It's Bo-Min...Like Bo Jackson

I always pronounced Lajoie with 3 syllables...La-Juh-Way.

But I've also always said Hoe-Nus...and the smart people seem to say Hah-nis.

Baseball Glove Collector 08-26-2017 05:59 PM

This is good stuff. Being a collector since like forever, I have never even heard anyone pronounce it Goo-Dee until now. I have never thought twice that it could be anything other than Gow-Dee (like cow). Interesting though.

Just my two cents worth but I have also called Bowmans Bo-men pronounced like bow and arrow and Lajoie as Lazho-way. That American Greed pronunciation the other night threw me for a loop.

Fun thread.

great question. I always said "ho", but have heard many say "Hah". The narrator said "Ho" in the American Greed segment, but I hardly consider him an expert. What's the definitive answer on this??

Well, his first name was actually Johannes, and from wikipedia (which is always true ;) but in this case probably is):

Wagner was one of nine children. As a child, he was called Hans by his mother, which later evolved into Honus. "Hans" was also an alternate nickname during his major league career.

So it appears that Hah-nus is the way to go.

Eric72 08-27-2017 07:23 AM

I have been fairly certain, for a long time, that his name was pronounced HAH-niss. It's nice to see that theory gaining a little traction.

Good point. We're having a cook out today. Can't wait to try a Goo-dee on one of the burgers.

I bet I cough before I'm through, though it might even be too tough to chew.;).

And by the way, Hans, a bad kid, was his mom's onus, until he received his first bonus and became Honus.:D

h2oya311 08-27-2017 10:14 AM

Regarding Honus, I would imagine the audio of Glory of Their Times would shed some light on the matter...anyone care to share??

BillyCoxDodgers3B 08-27-2017 11:35 AM

I knew several players who were friendly with Wagner during his coaching days. All called him "Hoe-nus". Interestingly, in spite of the total esteem in which he was held, not one man ever referred to him as "Mr. Wagner".
