I find scanning beat up cards more fun than ones in better shape.

My first prewar card.

Obviously, I am in the minority on this forum.
I have absolutely no attraction to or appreciation for lesser condition cards, much less beaters. I would rather continue the search than settle for less than my targeted standards. The search has almost been as enjoyable as finally attaining those targets and always looking for upgrades just isn't the same. But you guys enjoy your beaters...I won't get in your way - and you can have all the brussel sprouts too. . . |

Beaters tell a story.
Back when one was young, they didn't care about condition. They just wanted the card. You would trade a beeater Mays for 50 nm cards. The reasons for owning a beater are multiple. A) often its a filler in trying to complete a set B) for its own charm C) its a cheap way to own a hard to buy card D) I collect a beater typeset- punch holes, tears, scuffs, markings etc. are all different types. E) They're funny or entertaining D) There is a story to each beater (how did it get that way?) E) I know someone who uses them in a rotisserie game F) A cheap way to build a second set E) other reasons- add your own here I doubt anyone would turn down a beater T206 Wagner. |
pETE....
Your Matty is actually A BEAUTY!
|
Quote:
For the price such a Wagner would cost...YES. I would turn it down... same goes with the '52 Mantle - WAY overpriced* ! imo * = times when 'whatever the market demands' just does not make sense. . . |
Quote:
I never used to believe in this philosophy but over the years I have come to realize that some cards are a lot more scarce than I ever imagined. And it is situations like this where I will make exceptions and and beaters to my collection. But the Matty is an exception. The only reason it remains in my collection is because it was my "first!" |

I also wanted to add this card. I pulled this from a wax pack in 1972. 9 years old then.
Anyway, after December 31 happened, it came off the wall (see the tape) and into a cigar box, with marbles and such. It remains my favorite card from my childhood. |

EDIT: I think I could pretty much post my entire pre-war collection in this thread. |

I am resurrecting this thread to show one of my favorite beaters.
(and also because of the other wacky thread on the front page today) |
This is as close as I get to a beater card. :p
http://net54baseball.com/picture.php...ictureid=15426 I still love it, though. |
I was at Spring Training when this thread started so I am glad to see it revived so I can add some of my favorites.
First up is an uber-rare die cut Zeenut: http://www.dlfallen.altervista.org/Files/Beater1.jpg The second card was found at the National a few years ago. Personally, I believe this was originally part of the Ed Norton collection. Opinions? http://www.dlfallen.altervista.org/Files/Beater2.jpg The final card I obtained from a fellow Net54 member as part of a Lot purchase. It really appeals to my OBCish sense of humor: http://www.dlfallen.altervista.org/Files/Beater3.jpg Dave Fallen |

please pm if you want sell or trade pre war beater super cheap! thanks |
What's worse than a "beater"?
What's worse is finding out that your "beaters" aren't even authentic...which was the case with 16 of the 27 vintage cards I just sent in to Beckett Grading. This is a bummer :(. They just mark them "Questionable Authenticity" with no explaination. That was my question, that's why I sent them in. Does this mean that they are fake for sure? Any ideas?
Thanks. |

A Beater of the Team that Could Not be Beat

Though it isn't a card, but instead a photo, here is my favorite "beater."
The photograph in question is an exhibit photo of the 1912 Red Sox at Spring Training in Hot Springs on the eve of their championship season. The backing is almost nonexistent and photo torn, but the image the photographer captures is still so crisp and clear you feel like you are there! |
Ruth
Sebastian,
Once again, you have a card I've fallen for. Gotta let me know if you want to sell that beater Ruth! Jon Quote:
