February 2016 New Pick Ups

1 Attachment(s)
I didn't notice this thread started yet, so here goes. I woke up about an hour ago to FedEx banging on the door to drop this one off. Not a bad way to start the month off as I've been looking for one for a while. Thanks to Sam from Net54 and his friend for this one.

Stonepony 02-01-2016 11:20 AM

That's NICE!!!

Jobu 02-01-2016 12:10 PM

Great card Jesse. One might even call it a "splendid" pick up!

Howe’s Hunter 02-01-2016 12:50 PM

Never made it in on the first day of a new Pick-up Thread

Pretty exciting. Or I just have a dull life.

<a href="http://s150.photobucket.com/user/T206ster/media/284%20Dygert_zpsou7gqn1c.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/T206ster/284%20Dygert_zpsou7gqn1c.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 284 Dygert_zpsou7gqn1c.jpg"/></a>

Number 284 in the rebuilt collection. Large enough it looks like there is just a bit of an extra factory number at the top. Thanks to Travis Bidner for pointing this one out on eBay.

With any luck, number 285 in the collection will be about the last post in the month of February....

I was thrilled to win the t207...nice that no one seems to be chasing them now. I love the LC cards. Speaking of passing through famous hands, OBC trading buddy Jimi Thayer sent an interesting M101-2...neat stamp I thought.

Thanks guys, I thought it was pretty splendid myself. Looks like a few nice pickups already. That Ruth looks great.

Jobu 02-01-2016 08:48 PM

Congrats! And a little bit of a WST ghost on the back to boot. I always get a thrill every time you add another of Howe's cards. Thanks for continuing to post all of them.

Pretty sure I overpaid for it, but picked up this Worch box variation (on left) to go with the no box one (on right) that I've had for a while.

Yoda 02-04-2016 10:23 AM

My eyes, along with the rest of me, must be going, as I swear it looks like in that beautiful T5 Cobb that he is using a catcher's mitt ???

T5 Cobb

John, it is a catchers mitt he's wearing. I've seen only one other photo of Cobb wearing one. I'm sure there are more, but it's a rare sight and pretty cool they used this photo for the Pinkerton.

Well February looks like a tough month to compete in so far, but here are my humble additions :) The Speaker and Chase are two of my favorite cards in the set, really beautiful colors. And I know the Campanella was post-war, but it just came in this week and so I threw it on the scanner with the others. Love that card too, what a great image.

Nice one, doesn't get much better that Ruth and Wagner. Throw in a Cobb and a Gehrig and you'll be good to go.

I finally picked up a really nice Helmar. The ones I've had have always been pretty rough.

Yeah Scott. I had to read up on him. Quite a story there. Died young too.

Really excited to add 3 more to my 1934 Goudey set. It's been a year since the last additions.

Nice Lavender - I am happy to see you add another one.

Henry Gruber OJ Run

Completed an OJ player run for Henry Gruber. The cards do not have impressive images, but took awhile to obtain (I'll take what I can get). I collect cards of all the 1887 Detroit Wolverines; Henry posting a 4-3 record for the Champs. Henry was not issued an OJ card until joining Cleveland in 1889.

Happy with this pickup from Scott. From the Paddy O'Connor estate and although it doesn't have Paddy, it has another Pirate (no, not Wagner):

Fun stuff, Scott

the set contains quite a few such beauties - this one my favorite. Nice P/up!

and apparently we share an appreciation of the Frey N28. While I sold my set (a hint too pedestrian) I kept a sweet Frey along with an Oakley and Buffalo Bill in my treasured cards type card subset. Forgetting about the all too easy jokes - unlike most normally staged cards - the inexplicable balls in the air thing gets me - and despite the unbordered white background approach I find the card to be aesthetically pleasing.

Mikehealer 02-07-2016 07:34 PM

Scott- very nice CJ Wood.

Daryl- great Red border Chase.

Just bought this interesting card last night. It pictures Julia St. Clair, who through research I have identified as a Bloomer Girl. I found her on a roster in 1902, so I'd guess this was produced some time around then. I also found one other image through Google search as well as a discussion on another example on this website. That makes 3 and it makes me confident this was a commercially issued card and not just a homemade memento:

"Gribbin" came in the mail today -- another example of a great exchange with a board member -- thank you! :)

I put Gribbin in quotes because his actual name (and anything about him) eludes me. Baseball reference spells his name Francis Gribbens: http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=gribbe001fra
Lew Lipset spelled it Gribbon on his encyclopedia. What other references should I check?

I'm still looking for a few more Red Sun cards over on the BST page.

Cheers,
Steve

Cool cards Gary - I've never seen either of those before...and I've been around the block a few times.

Is that a football that the right handed Babe Ruth is throwing? And why does he have a block of wood in his glove?

and why is he right-handed and wearing what appears to be a cricket outfit?

glchen 02-09-2016 02:48 PM

Yea, I don't think the quality control in that set was the best. The 1928 Sociedade set looks much better where they used actual photos.
