1979 Topps Unopened Pack
I got it for Christmas.
What should I do with it? http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps0ba06f3y.jpg Let's run the poll until 8 Eastern tonight. I'll do what the polls says. |
I wouldn't open it.
|
Open it for fun, or sell it. I see absolutely no point owning an unopened pack, myself.
|
fyi, I moved this here from the correct section for more eyes to see it....(agreed) all in fun. Apologies for the slight o/t to our pre-war discussion..
|
Open it. Could get a gem Ozzie or others and make a killing

Lol, you're poll is going to be slanted as we want to see the cards :)
|
The pack itself looks a little o/c!
|
Open it.
|
Better make sure you have some card sleeves on hand...
|
Rip that baby, there might be a gem mint John Montefusco in there!

Keep it. Like wine, the gum improves with.age. Opening the pack is like uncorking a bottle of wine. Only savages chew anything after 1985.
|
1979
I keep at least one unopened pack with each of my Topps sets. For me, it is part of the set. And I know that whatever is in those packs will never be as good as what I like to think is in those packs :)
|
I would probably open it. I know someone who opened a 1960 Topps pack around 10-12 years ago. I have the Art Ditmar card that was in the middle of the pack and it's gorgeous/perfect condition.
|
Grip it and Rip it!!!
Rip it !!!!!
|
I voted "open it" since it's not my pack... I personally would not open it if it were mine. :D
Please remember to record a video...don't post the cards one at a time...unless you want to post three Ozzies and four Ryans. ;) Cheers, Steve |
You gotta ask yourself this. Is the reality of getting a perfect Ed Kranepool in hand better than just imagining that a perfect Kranepool is sitting in the middle of that pack??
|
give it to me as a christmas pressie

There are 12 cards in the pack, you know. Although this isn't a 52 Topps, and I'm just having fun with it, I will do a video and throw it on You tube. |
Save it 'til the National and open it at the Case Break Pavillion.
|
Re-gift it.
|
Good luck, and have fun!

Re: 1979 Topps Unopened Pack
Sell it and buy a nice pre-war card.
|
I vote to open the pack.
I couldn't just leave a pack unopened and not know what may be in it. |
You might get a slightly suspect Clemente rookie....
|
Keep it sealed
There are millions and millions of 1979 Topps cards out there. Does the world need any more PSA 8 1979's? Keep it sealed.

Rip it!
As an aside, my wife and I binge-watched the entire run of Three's Company last winter. I found three packs of 1976 Topps Three's Company cards at the LCS for a couple bucks a pack and she loved them when she found them in her stocking! She ripped them and got a Chrissy rookie and a couple of Mr. Ropers! :p She even took a crack at the gum, so when you break open the pack give that a shot as well! |
Open it so I don't have to open mine!

If you want to re-capture some fun memories, then by all means open the pack. Just a word of "warning," I recently bought a box of 1981 Fleer SuperStar Stickers (and was four shy of a complete set or so), and I "tasted" the gum....it literally dissolved in my mouth, long enough to find the nearest napkin and eject it properly in the trash! Still, fun to try....;)
|
OK. 75-20. Going to open and post video of it. Never done that before, but I'll do it for NET 54 folks.
I'll post link here. Thanks. It was fun. EDIT: OK, I opened it and recorded it. But not going to the trouble of posting it. The best card was a Catfish Hunter OC. All the cards had good edges and corners. The printing OC was the issue with all the cards. Nothing major but Catfish. The OC was incredible on all the cards. As a kid, I never noticed that. I was 16 in 1979. LOL. And, yes. The gum just dissolves in your mouth. No need to chew. LOL. Thanks everyone. |
Thanks for the update! Glad you had some fun with your gift!
The oldest I've gone on gum is 28 years...opened a bunch of 1987 packs with my nephew over Thanksgiving. Even that gum was brittle and turned to dust as I tried to chew. Cheers, Steve |

No Ozzie, but it was fun.You never know. Thanks buddy. |
How funny... Went to a card show today on Long Island and ' The Count' was today's autograph guest !
Hope you pull some nice stars from the pack ! Good luck |
Glad you decided to open it. Since it was a Christmas gift it's good that you had fun with it. Like Peter I don't see the point in collecting unopened packs. I love opening stuff, especially when you have a chance for a big hit. As you can tell from my id though I like to gamble.

Let's put this baby to bed. Here are the cards. Please note, my scanner cuts off the bottom a little if I don't have them a CardSaver or top loader. For this, I didn't bother.

In 1970 an older kid (I was 8, he was ~12) in the neighborhood gave me 20 cents to buy two packs of baseball cards. He said I could keep one pack and he the other. However, if I opened either of the packs, he would take the best 10 cards and leave me with the rejects. I made it about 100 feet from the store, and about 300 feet from my friends house before I opened the cards. How someone** could have an unopened pack of cards for 30+ years I could never understand.
** I reaise this is not the case with the OP |
Gosh Neikro looks like a little kid and I think he was 34 in 1979 and NO WAY am I taking a bite of that gum. No way no how.

Who the heck is Lance Rautzhan???

LOVE those late 1970s uniforms! The red home pinstripes of the Braves, the "tequila sunrise" Astros, powder blues of the Blue Jays and Cardinals, the Rangers with the wide pant stripes and henley pullover (those are the BEST Texas Rangers uniforms, hands down, in my opinion). Lots of pullover jerseys, form fitting uniforms, and the best part; stirrups!

This inspired me to open my 1972 O-P-C pack. Got two Clementes and can't believe how sharp and crisp the cards are, especially the backs.
Wish i had another to open! Greg |

As one of the comments pointed out, the box score would indicate the pitcher was "Ellis, D." For those who need help, think phonetically. ;)

Absolutely amazing. I will fully admit going into tears during Dock's reading of the letter from Jackie Robinson and talking about losing Clemente. If anyone has not seen it, I suggest setting time aside tonight. No joke...tonight. |

What a successful pack. Two current Tigers (Parrish and Glynn), a former Tiger (Niekro), a future Tiger's rookie card (Lopez) and a sibling of a Tiger (Tom Underwood, brother of Pat). Nicely done! |
