Saw this on a different forum (got a great thread going and saw some truly amazing collections) and thought it would be fun and great to see some other impressive collections! As well as for me to look at more threads non-autographed ;).

Vote for 5 members on this forum that you believe best represents the top collections of our hobby. You cannot vote for yourself (and I wouldn't have anyway).

Mine, not in order, but it is mainly auto guys lol:

1. JasonxMay - (signed hof rookies)

2. Navarro - (signed hof rookies and hof signed cards)

3. Paul - T206 Collector - single greatest signed T206 collection in existence

4. TheSchleps - (see Navarro)

5. RGold - (insanely high grade '33 Goudeys)

Leon - (big type collector with some monstrous rarities)

Honorable mentions:

1. Leon - (big type collector with some monstrous rarities)

2. MattyC - (check out most valuable cards you own)

3. Dave - (highest quality signed hof collection you can imagine)

4. Richard and Jim - (seriously have every autograph of every player imaginable, and many obscure guys who passed early and had a few games played)

5. So many others to be considered, please don't be offended!

I'm not too familiar with other peoples collections, other than a few that I've seen. I have seen yours Brent and it's hard to imagine someone with a better collection of signed HOFers but if there is one I'd love to see it.

I'm sure most of us have seen the collection Leon has up for sale right now and that one is amazing.

MattyC's collection of high-end centered cards with great eye appeal would get a vote from me. If you ever want to see why you should buy the card and not the holder check out what he's posted.

Perhaps we should see if members feel like posting links to show off their collection. Even if we don't have an official vote I'm sure we'd all like to admire the cards.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm not close lol.

Scary thing is, I personally believe to view myself for Hall of Fame Autographed "Rookie" Cards on the outside 15 looking in.

I didn't realize there were that many autographed vintage cards in existence to have 15 collections better than yours. I guess that's why I don't see them up for sale very often. Or perhaps I'm not looking in the right places.

baztacula 07-17-2015 04:50 PM

Right now I'd say it's a tie among all the guys you mentioned. A fair tie breaker would be the gentleman who has the absolute best Toad Ramsey of the group. Obviously, a signed Ramsey card would seal the deal.

Show us your Toads, fellas.

I'm sure there are hundreds of fantastic collections amongst board members. I'm also sure many are held quite close to the vest.

+1

Though I show off on the board, no one in town know what I have...at least no one who knows where I live.

The good thing about having money tied up in this hobby rather than jewelry, electronics, or cars...you are not normally a target.

Nope, not me. Don't own a single 1933 Goudey.

And No. 3 is factually incorrect, too, in regard to "single greatest signed T206 collection in existence."

Contrary to what many here think (and what often is implied), there are a ton of collectors out there with fantastic collections who either have never heard of Net54 or would never even think of posting here.

I think a Net54 HOF would be better. it would be a great way to note great posters past and present such as the Bruces and those who constantly help the hobby such as Wonka and Calvin Dog.

Or we could remember Peter Chao and jrawlsian among others

First off, sorry!

Secondly, who is better for signed T206? Just learnin

Lastly, I know there are plenty of amazing other collections we don't know about, but that's not the point. That's why I narrowed it down to only Net54, hence the title.

All joking aside neat topic. I can't say that the following people have the best or aren't the best in their collecting. However with that said I've either admired their passion, collecting, collections, or they have inspired my collecting or influenced me in some shape or form. In no particular order and to name just a few..they are.

Richard Masson
Jay Miller
James Blumenthal (RIP)
Tony Andrea
Jeff Lichtman
Ron Gold
Chad & Doug Dreier
Dan McKee and Pops (RIP Mr. McKee)
Mike Peich
John Vanderbeck
Monty Barrie
Chris Browne
Sean Costello
Bruce Dorskind (RIP)
Jay Wolt
Barry Halper (RIP)
Scott Mosley
Julie Vognar
Keith O'leary
Tom Boblitt
Keith Olbermann
Rob Lifson
Joann Kline
Brian Weisner
Henry Moses
Scott Hassel
Tom Burton
Barry Sloate

Not to mention the fathers and early collectors of our hobby Egan, Burdick, Carter, Wharton-Tigar, Bray, Barker, Pollard, Nagy, Conlon, Copeland and on and on...

In the end there are so many amazing collectors it would be tough to make a list because so many have impacted the hobby beyond just what they have obtained in collectibles. In the end I'm flattered any one would mention me or my collection so thanks.

Cheers,

John

Just about to nominate Ted Z.

Bryan and Dennis

I really appreciate your kind words.

However, I am more surprised that Mark Macrae and Art Martineau and Scot Reader have not been mentioned by now.

Furthermore, although he has not posted on Net54 in quite a while, Bill Heitman certainly deserves to be mentioned in this "HOF" thread.

Anyhow, having just noted these four very worthy candidates....they are indeed my selections.

but John (Wonkaticket) and Paul (t206collector) have the two collections I would most want to see in person. Your idea is very different than this.

Listen, to each there own. I was feeling that this is the type of thread that pretty much makes this feel like a good ol boys club and is pretty exclusive and divisive.

I realize there is a big group of people here who all know each other and like to interact but I enjoy this site even though I don't know most people personally, and frankly I am okay with that, but a newcomer will quickly feel like they have no place if these are the threads we feed.

In an era where we seem to be mightily concerned with the future of our hobby we need to be careful not to ostracize and eliminate interest from those who don't fit into a super narrow category of mega-high-end-collections.

Of course it's exclusive! It's the individual(s) that best represent our hobby! Are you not going to search baseball history if you just got interested in the game itself? What do you think the HOF is? Are you not going to look at past All-time Greats because they are too good and made the Legends Club? Are you not going to like the game anymore because it's biased on performance rather than character?

If anything, new comers should welcome a thread like this. A thread of this type gets to showcase different cards, and sets that you never imagined! I am learning and seeing new cards every time a post happens here. But, I guess that's not what the hobby wants by looking to the past cards.

Do you collect modern cards? Where do you think they get their designs for the best sets they offer!?

New collectors can see a thread like this and want to go after the Monster, 33/34 Goudey, '52 Topps etc. etc.

Do new collectors not want to learn about the beauty and glory these older cards have to offer, especially with all the shiny modern crap you see advertised at every ball park?

I understand your concern and respect it, but I disagree with you, I think you're far from being correct and it's not even close.

Maybe we should stop with the monthly pick up threads, right? Because after all, those separate the "clubs" you mentioned. $10k+ cards and $2 cards are listed, and they are welcomed across the board!

Like I said, if you don't like the thread/topic, DON'T OPEN IT! Geez

Celebrate the cards not the people. Brother obviously I offended you. This wasn't about you. I care about the hobby. That little brown stuff on your nose doesn't mean much to me. Maybe you should start a penis size thread too. Although I will be on the low end of that one as well.

Wow, you're too full of yourself. Are we not celebrating cards that people own? If it weren't for the collectors, we wouldn't see the cards ever! The collectors don't have to show us their cards, especially the ones where there are only a few examples, so personally, I and thousands of others appreciate that they share their cards. After all, about the cards right?

Brown stuff? Really...How? I'll just say it, you're a complete idiot. Oh goly gee, I sure need to brown nose people on a forum where people hide behind computers so people like me.

Brown stuff? Really...How? I'll just say it, you're a complete idiot (sorry Leon). Oh goly gee, I sure need to brown nose people on a forum where people hide behind computers so people like me.

No, sorry. My post speaks about how you're wrong, again. Doesn't matter who said it, I would have said the same reply to anyone.

I was clearly defending/explaining the point of my thread, which clearly still boggles your mind.

The main point? If you don't like a thread or if there is a thread that doesn't interest you, why open it? You never answered.

Have a good night, I'm done with this part of the thread.

I would respectfully disagree. If you look over my short but in no way complete list of collectors who I personally admire. I think you will find a wide selection of collectors who span every nuance of this hobby. These range from yes significant collectors with significant means. To the everyday collector. If you feel that mentioning people one admires for their achievements, their commitment or contributions to the hobby big or small is some way an elitist endeavor. All because some folks who may be mentioned may have more than others, well you'll have bigger issues in life than a list on a card forum.

In fact quite the opposite. I think you would find that many of the above people are some of the most humble and genuine people one could ever hope to meet. The last thing any of them would want is for anyone to "feel left out." that I'm pretty sure of.

Cheers,

John

P.S. The only real downfall to a thread like this is that so many amazing collectors and collections are not known about, or those collectors don't give a rat's you know what about Net54. :) So in the end the list will be not 100%....

Dorskind was always posting lists like these. Maybe that's why it feels elitist to identify "top collections" in the OP's words. Understood he did not intend it that way.

I don't need to address you Peter you're just one of the great unwashed peasants aren't you? :D ;)

Bruce's lists we're self serving to say the least, however I agree the OP didn't have the "we" mentality in mind when he fired this up. Just a little naïve well-intentioned post IMO.

Not sure why my efforts are not recognized as some others are, maybe it's because I have chosen to study and collect non-mainstream items such as Baseball Hall of Fame rookie cards and Negro League Baseball memorabilia rather than T206's and '52 Topps Mantle cards. Oh well, I am proud of my contributions to the hobby, in the end, that's all that really matters.

I'm just happy to be included in the discussion. I would love to know who has more or better ones. Certainly the total absence of a signed Cobb in my collection leaves a gaping hole that many others - yes, he signed many - have filled. Morey's old Lajoie also comes to mind. Would love to know where they all ran off to. It's a damn shame they are not shared with other collectors who can truly enjoy them without having to own them. I understand privacy, security, blah blah. But, it would be nice to see them.
