July Pickups

I'll get things started off for July. It's the first time I've seen this poster, so I had to have it:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMT...Vc2Yv/$_57.JPG

KCRfan1 07-02-2015 08:51 AM

Fun stuff Chris! Is this a poster or a picture from a magazine? What ever it is from, what an ICONIC image of Mick! Classic pose, stadium in the background, and the writing on the bat, his shoes, players in the background! Could look at and study the picture for hours!!!!

Bestdj777 07-02-2015 08:57 AM

Thanks Lou! I have not gotten it in my hands yet, but my understanding is that it is a fairly large poster that was sold in the 60s somewhere near Yankee stadium.

Chris----do you get the batteries and tennies too

Do you know what year. Photo would have made a great Topps card

I am assuming I get the batteries, but not sure on the sneakers :) Unfortunately, I have no idea when the photo was taken or the poster produced. This is the first time I've ever seen the poster and did not get any more specifics when I picked up the matching premium apart from the fact it was from the 60s. Based on the image, I'd say it was likely taken in the late 60s?

pawpawdiv9 07-02-2015 01:13 PM

@ Bestdj7777: I found a AH listing, saying its 1970s. I sent you several Pm's of some examples as well while looking;
But this link is the best i found:

Chris D., I hope you do get the tennies. That would certainly sweeten the deal. :D Congrats on getting the poster!

Chris M., the poster Chris D. got, if I remember the listing correctly, is around 2' by 3'. Is that correct Chris? The link is for a 4" by 7" photograph. Same picture though.

Herb, those are some nice rookies!

Thanks Mike! I believe that size is correct. It's a rather large poster. He has a couple of others he is looking to get rid of, so I'll let you know if there is anything worthwhile there. Looking forward to seeing the your pickup soon!

Nice Mike...that 51B Mick , what did SGC grade it? a 5? or higher? Nice and crystal clear
COngrats!!!! I stared at my 52 Mick for a long long time before putting it away. Its one of those things you think about while holding it..OMG i am actually holding my 'white whale'

CW 07-03-2015 01:21 PM

Nice Reggie, Herb!

Great haul of cards, Jerry!

Michael, that Mick RC is fantastic! Easy solution... take the Mantle to the fireworks and look at it then. :)

Congratulations! It's a beautiful card! For this one, I probably wouldn't even crack it and "center" it :)

Beautiful Musial!!! I don't think most collectors realize just how tough these '55 Exhibit Postcard backs are. I spent a good 4-5 years trying to find a Robinson and finally gave on actively searching for one when I opted to sell my master set.

MattyC 07-04-2015 01:11 PM

Wow-- a 51 Mantle is a momentous addition for any baseball card collection! Let alone one with such a sharp, striking image as that one. That card is hotter than a firecracker these days, with few nice ones surfacing compared to demand, and they are hotly contested when they do pop up. The true Rookie Card, and such a beautiful card, of the biggest hobby name alongside Ruth! Congrats and must make for such a Happy 4th!

Edit to add....speaking of 51 Micks ;)

A buddy on the PSA boards came through in a major clutch way to help me get this one from across the country on this 4th. A card I've been scrambling to get more of before they go the way of their year-older cousin ;) The left/right centering was love at first sight!

Congrats, awesome card. I have found myself staring at mine almost every night since I got it. I've been trying to stay in a little more often after the money I've spent on cards recently as well.

Nice centering on yours Matty, as always.

AustinMike and MattyC, (the Mantle hoarder)

Way to go on the Mantle rookie. I need to pony up get one before they get beyond reach for me. I don't think anyone will regret getting a 51 Bowman Mantle now but I am sure anyone that does not land one in the near future will regret not getting one sooner versus later. Congrats.

Bestdj777 07-04-2015 09:53 PM

Great pick up Fred and thanks for the message (your mailbox is full and wouldn't let me respond. And, great Mantles everyone!

pariah1107 07-05-2015 06:59 PM

Here are two 1958 Wenatchee Chiefs Mini-Cards. I have seen 4, but would imagine there is one for every regular roster player including Azcue. These came in some type of sugar/caramel package as the backs are stained like CJ's. Probably Applets from Cashmere, WA.... Here are the cards and team photo:

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmw9fiqf.jpg

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8c8d42b.jpg

BTW if anyone has a Dick Littlejohn, or Bob Famous card from this team I will pay $100 for it :) If porn stars were baseball teams....

AustinMike 07-05-2015 08:54 PM

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This was one of my must-have cards and it's nice to finally have it.

Chris M - SGC gave it an 80 (PSA 6 equivalent). In regards to the '52 Topps, I wish I had a '52 Topps to stare it. It's another card on my list of must-haves, but it will be a long time before I land one of those ... if ever.

MattyC - I also think the '51 Bowman is undervalued, especially when compared to the '52 Topps. Can't see your picture, but I'm sure it is nicely centered. Also, this '51 Bowman is pleased to be with the '54 Bowman I got from you many months ago. Thanks again for that!

jb67 - I agree. I wish I had gotten a '52 Topps Mantle a long time ago. But, oh well. At least I do have his rookie card.

MattyC 07-05-2015 09:39 PM

My bad, was doing some organizing and the link didn't work. Here is a pretty good pic my buddy took in hand at the show. Should be in hand for my scanner later this week...

Thanks Al, Strange issue for sure. I can't seem to find any info on them. Time to visit the library and rifle through some Wenatchee World newspapers and hopefully find something. The other two I have seen are: Bert Haas and James Passilla.

I have had one of these framed for about 15 years. Here's a thread I posted awhile back about it. Ours appear to be a little different. What does it say in the lower right?

Crazy pickup day for me from the Cincinnati show......

Picked up a nice EX or so 1958 Topps set that will need about 50 upgrades but nothing too huge.....

Picked up a group of (7) 1952 Topps high numbers getting me to 30 to go with my 1-310 set that has 1-80 in both red and black.

http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XK...2/IMG_1386.JPG

One of which was this Mathews. It has what appears to be a yellow print line on it. Hoping for a 2, would be thrilled with a 3 if it comes somehow. A little indentation on the left center but no real creasing. Thoughts? Planning PSA but would SGC be better to get the higher grade?

Picked up a '63 Fleer Bob Gibson, a '72 In Action Willie with ridiculously great centering (too bad about the slight corner touches) and an oddball Jim Bunning. I know KDKA is a radio station is Pittsburgh, PA (and is supposedly the first commercial radio station in the world), but I have no idea what this sucker is. Jimbo was on the Pirates in 68/69 I believe, so it is undoubtedly from that time frame.

If anyone is greatly familiar with '63 Fleers, can you tell me if the 'stain' on the back of my Gibby is SOP for these cards? I figure it has something to do with the cookie the pack held, but I am unsure. Other Fleers I have seem to possess very similar anomalies and I want to make sure it's not the remains of paste or something else put there directly by humans after it left the factory.

Darren,

I guess I can chime in with some memories of the 1963 Fleer baseball. I collected them as a kid. The ginger cookie was not oily, as I recall, and perhaps a bit stale. Still, cookies have oil as an ingredient, and the Fleer company did something very thoughtful to prevent problems to their cards.

I remember this very well.

Their nickel-a-piece wax packs included another plain card, dark brown on one side and white on the other. The dark brown side faced the cookie, which likely was included to prevent any oil residue on the cookie from being absorbed into one of their beautiful cards. I never remembered any of my Fleers being stained. That would have annoyed me even as a 9-year-old, and I'm rather certain I would have recalled if the cards came out of the pack stained. Some things you'll remember from your childhood--52 years later!:D

Hope this helps at least eliminate the free cookie from being the cause of the stains on your Gibson.

For everyone's edification...I looked around at COMC and immediately ran into a ton of cards that had the same (read as "similar") back stains as my Gibson, so I'll display a few of them here:
Attachment 198188
Attachment 198189

It's pretty clear something was definitely going on inside of the 1963 Fleer packs. If Brian's recollections are correct and the cards were protected from the cookie, my guess is maybe at some point -- at the beginning of the run or later in the run -- the set-up changed and these safeguards were either added or discarded. (In other words, perhaps when the cards were first released there were no protective measures in place, but then consumers started complaining about the stains and Fleer acted on it? Who knows.) The high rate of occurrence of these stains seems to indicate that the dark brown/white protective cards were completely removed and it wasn't just a case of them accidentally NOT being inserted during the packing process from time to time.

Rob, but at least the thoughtful and considerate Mr. Drysdale selected the perfect place for his autograph on a 1958 Topps. Agree with Al all the way; the gent who selected a '58 to have Don sign was simply not the brightest crayon in the box. However, again, with Big D signing the yellow background, you have a genuine beauty. Nice pick-up.

Big thanks to MattyC for this Mantle rookie! Just received it in hand. Card presents so much better than the technical grade...

I cannot even begin to say how excited I am to have just picked this up. I have been searching for this for years, and it is the last card I needed to consider my Mantle Topps run complete:

Many thanks to Chris (PawPaw) for helping me locate it and for the auction house for their exceptional customer service and ridiculously reasonable shipping costs.

Thanks for the aknowlegment, I just knew you piss or shizz your pants when i alerted you about the Venez Mick. Plus, it was not boldly displayed in their catalog. Glad to help you get your hole filled in Bestdj777.

Chris, I am so happy for you, my friend. Ever since I first noticed your thread responses, at the bottom was a plea for help in locating the 1960 Topps Venezuela Rival All Stars Mantle & Boyer. All Topps Venezuelas seem impossible, to my way of thinking. This is truly an occasion to celebrate!

Thank you for sharing with us. Remarkable---thoroughly remarkable.:D
