I'm glad the Manley made it to you safely Frank! I guess I should show off the one I purchased that made it possible to send that one to you and your collection.

I was cleaning out a closet and in a box I found a notebook I had forgotten about. It has quite a few 8 by 10s that I obtained through the mail 10 to 15 years ago. I will put up a few each month. The Phyllis Diller signature is better in person, It didn't show up very good in the scan.

Teresa Wright

When I was a little kid growing up I remember watching "The Pride Of The Yankees" for the first time and having a major crush on Teresa Wright.

My favorite movie of hers is "Shadow Of A Doubt" with Joseph Cotton.

I just picked this up.

Had a great day on Tuesday at TPC with my wife who patiently waits with me as I collected these.

mighty bombjack 05-07-2015 10:31 PM

Wow! I'm not a golf guy but that is a sweet looking momento there! Is it a flag? You gonna display it somehow?

tazdmb 05-08-2015 05:06 AM

Were you in the kids area 😃
How was signing in the kids area compared to your area?

Congrats on the flag and also for having a patient wife (something rare in the collectibles world ).
Just curious how nice were the golfers when they signed? While it appears that most of the signatures are legible it does appear that some golfer's signatures are going the same way that baseball players autos are going and that is into the realm of squiggles and lines.
Since I can't read all of them did you get any big names?

I recently picked up this nice vintage signed fountain pen AP of "The Arkansas Hummingbird" Lon Warneke.

Warneke pitched a no-hitter in 1941 at Cincinnati and also was an umpire following his career as a pitcher.

Questions/Answers

The Golfers were very gracious. I waited at the 9th and 18th green for most of the autographs. And there was a mix of Kids adults and a large group of Autograph Professionals (easy to tell they had backpacks with Flags, Pictures, balls, etc. and would look to get mostly big names and more than once)
The Kids area's were by the practice area and by the Clubhouse after 18. Many Golfers signed for quite awhile at the Kids area's Ricky Fowler signed for probably 25 minutes and for just kids.
Big names on this flag Phil Michelson, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Jordan Spieth, Padraig Harrington, Jason Day, Ryo Ishikawa, Martin Kaymer, Of the 30 names on the flag I identified 27. Many although not household names are top 100 golfers. The two I missed were Tiger any Rory Both signed that day I waited by Clubhouse and Tiger signed at 9th green and when Rory was Signing by practice area I was on 18th green waiting for Jordan Spieth who despite the huge crowd asking for his auto was VERY nice to everybody.
My goal for the day was just one of the following group. Phil, Tiger, Rory, Spieth. And I got two of the four. My wife a Phil fan had him sign her Ticket so all in all a great day. Aside from the autographs lots of great golf good food ton of Pictures just a great day all around. I had access to "The Turn" which was between 9 and 18 and had views of both A/C ,comfortable seats, Nice Restrooms, food, drinks, and outside was rows of seats and tables where you could watch the golf from comfort. We just grabbed a bite and were back walking. Great Tournament I think we are going back Sunday But that is my wife's decision...Happy Mothers day, I am lucky to still be able to call mine.

Earliest known Johnny Vander Meer autograph as a professional baseball player

1 Attachment(s)
I recently purchased a 1933 scrapbook that was assembled by a 12 year old female baseball fan from Dayton, OH. The fan clipped Dayton Ducks box scores and articles for over one season and neatly pasted them into her scrapbook.

The Mid Atlantic inaugural season 1933 Dayton Ducks were the 1st professional stop of LHP Johnny Vander Meer of double no-hit fame.
As I slowly thumbed through the pages I was pleasantly surprised to find that an unknown 18 year old rookie named Johnny Vander Meer signed the 12 year old fans' scrapbook.
The eBay seller posted some pictures of the scrapbook, but did not disclose that it had several autographs inside including one of Vander Meer even when I asked about it's specific contents. As many of you know, Vander Meer is one of my central collecting focuses.

The neat thing is that his early autograph is definitely different than anything that I have ever seen to date. Cool!

bender07 05-08-2015 06:22 PM

Scott, great find on the early Vandeer Meer. I love to see early versions of autographs.

Scott,
This had me thinking: Do you collect the autographs of the umpire behind the plate for the no-hitter? Might be an interesting (and very difficult???) subset to go after.

Hi Andrew,
That's an interesting question. I do own the autographs of the home plate umpire for many of Nolan Ryan's milestones including his 7 no-hitters.

I also own the autographs of both home plate umpires for Vander Meer's consecutive no-hitters.
This vintage signed prescription pad of a physician in Cincinnati captured both George Magerkurth and Bill Stewart on a single page. Both umpires officiated both of Vandy's no-hitters.

Got this in the mail today after sending it about a week before the regular season started. I had the woman at the post office weigh the return envelope with the book cover and figure the postage for it. For some reason she figured it wrong and Goose was kind enough to add the extra 1.10 to it when he mailed it back. I will be sending him a couple buck to cover it and a thank you letter in the next few days. One more HOFer off my list.

Sean, those Monty Python signed figures are very neat. Congrats on finishing the set.

So much great stuff that has been auctioned off lately between Heritage, the outfit that sold the Steen items and many others. I was excited to get the one that I really wanted.

I've finally matted and framed my 1960 Pirates team. This was a labor of love as it's my birth year and my favorite all time team. It took several years to get this one together, mainly because Pirates trainer Danny Whelan was so damn hard to find. Oh sure, I found a few on basketballs (he was also the Knicks trainer) but who knew he'd be so hard to find on something I could matt.
Anyway, this I believe, is one of if not they most complete 1960 Pirates around. It has both the major owner (Gailbreath) as well as minority owner (Bing Crosby), it has everyone that was in the team picture including traveling secretary Bob Rice, special asst (and HOF'er) George Sisler, and every other player that wore a uniform that year...with the exception of the batboys which I just don't collect, and I was also able to pick up both Bob Prince and Jim "Possum" Woods.
Special thanks to Jim Stinson for helping me get the Clemente and the Olivo, Bill Corcoran for the great (and surprisingly hard to find) Lenny Levy, and our own Scmavl (Jarrod) for turning me on to the fact that Jim Woods was the second announcer.
Now this one is to bed, I will be working on my 1934 Cardinals and the 1919 Blacksox.

Picked this up off of Craigslist! 1937 Nebraska football team signed by nearly the entire team (missing only one signature)...there are more sigs on the photo than there are players and coaches represented though....some that didn't make the photo signed on the righthand margin. The one guy who didn't sign it passed away in 2013 at age 96...too bad the original owner didn't try to get it completed.

He was probably the original owner as was usually the case with the missing signature on these team photos

The guy I bought it from told me he had it over 20 years...the guy who didn't sign was Myers "Bud" Cather who was an ad man in New York, and then became the president of Bristol-Myers. I suppose it's possible, but I don't think the guy was living in Nebraska at any point in the last 60 years. Perhaps it was something he let go before he left Nebraska? I like your theory though, why would the guy need an autograph of himself?

Duluth Eskimo 05-28-2015 08:48 AM

I only say that as it was often the case with many team signed photos I have come across in my area and other team signed items I have bought and sold over the years. Oftentimes the owner does not sign their own photo. Had it not been signed by every other person, I might guess it was just an omission. Either way, that's a hell of a photo. I collect Gopher items from their championship years in the 30-40's and would love to find an item like that. Take care, Jason
