Ballparks that no longer stand - Which have you been too?
I was talking to a NET54-er and he has been to an amazing list of ballparks in general and it got me thinking about parks I have been to that no longer exist, just curious if we have any old timers here who have been to others.
I saw games at: -County Stadium Milwaukee -Three Rivers in Pitt -Riverfront - Cincy - saw Bench, Foster and Perez all hit home runs and I want to say they went back to back to back - was a die hard Big Red Machine fan so that was awesome. -Old Comiskey Park - White Sox, saw many games there - miss the trofts : ) |

Metrodome Milwaukee County I also will throw in: Mile High (though I didn't see the Rockies play there - just the Broncos a couple times) and the old Boston Garden (because I also got to walk out on the parquet.) Oh yeah, McNichols Arena in Denver to see the Avs play. |

Polo Grounds (Giants and Mets) As I remember the club house was behind CF. When a pitcher got pulled, he did not walk to the dugout but all the way to CF and out through a gate.
The Met in Minneapolis. I recall they had some sort of marker in the LF bleachers where one of Killebrew's HRs landed. Same thing in Memorial Stadium with a marker for a Frank Robinson HR. My all-time favorite for "enter at your own risk" was Municipal Stadium in KC. I sat in the upper deck. They had wooden seats. ALL the seats in the upper deck had splinters. I remember the seat in the row directly in front of me had an up-turned splinter about eight inches in length. If you needed some rectal surgery, it would be your seat of choice. |
Arlington
Astrodome Municipal Stadium KC Sportsman's Park (Old Busch) Busch Memorial Old Comisky Milwaukee County |
Three Stadiums
1. Candlestick Park.......home of my Giants.....attended there with my Grandfather from boyhood in the mid-1960's to 1994 (last game with Grandfather and my son together in 1993 on a trip out to visit him.)
2. Three Rivers Stadium......1992 National League Championship Series Was working in Gettysburg,PA and was able to snag a ticket. Saw future Giant Barry Bonds play in person for the first time and my former high school history student Pitcher Doug Drabek. Then drove to Cooperstown the next day to spend the weekend at the Hall. 3. Astrodome.......moved to Texas in 1972.....saw many a game at the old "coldest foam in the dome". I have a great collection of photos , programs, etc and wonderful memories of these parks. Great thread! Mike |
Old Comiskey
Tiger Stadium Busch Stadium County Stadium |
Shea Stadium
Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphins/Sun Life Stadium there (unless the A's make the World Series) will never be a full 70000 plus stadium again for the world series. I remember 2003 against the Yankees which was a scene that can never be copied again |
Old Comiskey Park
Milwaukee County Stadium Busch Stadium |
Tiger Stadium
Cleveland Municipal Stadium Milwaukee County Stadium Old Yankee Stadium Candlestick Park Veterans Stadium Philadelphia (didn't see a baseball game, just one Army vs. Navy football game) |

1. Arlington Stadium - saw a ton of games there, especially in the 1970s prior to the addition of the upper deck behind home plate. Nothing really special about it other than it was hot and you went there to watch BASEBALL, not be entertained with loud music between innings and for batter walk-ups, dot races, etc.
2. Jack Murphy Stadium - still there, but fully enclosed. I got to see games in it when the right field area was open, and the ambience was better for baseball. I thought it one of the nicer post-1965 "donut" or semi-donut stadiums 3. Astrodome - saw a lot of SWC Houston football in there, but only two baseball games, and both were very weird indoors, from the crack of the bat to the lighting, etc. Not my favorite place by any means. 4. LaGrave Field/Ft. Worth - former home of the now defunct Ft. Worth Cats minor league team. Really nice baseball ambience and historical site as well, built on the same footprint as the old LaGrave field, complete with the same dugouts (now field level suites), etc. Shame that the team went bankrupt and the stadium may be bulldozed for the sake of "progress." |
Ballparks
I've seen baseball games at:
Forbes Field - Pittsburgh Three Rivers - Pittsburgh, 1972 All Star Game |
Municipal Stadium - Cleveland
Fulton County Stasium Old Comisky Park Sportsmans Park Old Busch Stadium Astrodome Candlestick Park John |
I have seen games in 47 parks so far - 27 of the 30 current parks (all but Minnesota, Oakland and Tampa) and these 20 older parks listed below. I basically grew up in Old Comiskey and always loved Tiger Stadium too. My favorite current ballparks are Fenway, Philly, San Francisco and Colorado.
Comiskey Park – Chicago Old Busch Stadium – St. Louis Arlington Stadium – Texas Old Yankee Stadium – NYY County Stadium – Milwaukee Candlestick Park – San Fran Jack Murphy Stadium – San Diego Astrodome – Houston Fulton County Stadium – Atlanta Pro Player Stadium – Miami Shea Stadium – NYM Olympic Stadium – Montreal Metrodome – Minnesota Tiger Stadium – Detroit Veterans Stadium – Philly Three Rivers Stadium – Pitt Riverfront Stadium – Cincy RFK Stadium – Washington Cleveland Municipal Stadium Hiram Bithorn Stadium – San Juan, Puerto Rico |
Kingdome listed several times so far (me too) but no Sicks Stadium yet? Or are you all too young for that one?
|
County Stadium - Milwaukee
Comiskey Cleveland |
Comiskey Park – Chicago
Arlington Stadium – Texas Astrodome – Houston Fulton County Stadium – Atlanta Tiger Stadium – Detroit Kingdom - Seattle Memorial Stadium - Baltimore I just checked and the first stadium I ever went to, Oakland Coliseum in 1968, is still around ... surprisingly. I've only been to 2 major league games since 1994 (yeah, I'm still boycotting because of the strike - I'll have them on their knees soon ) and they were both in Houston. Tickets were given to me. |
Briggs Stadium, later know as Tiger Stadium
Fulton Stadium in Atlanta Joe |
Korakuen- home of the Yomiyuri Giants in Tokyo
Candlestick I wish I could put the Oakland Coliseum on the list haha |
I kept skimming past this thread thinking I didn't have any. Of course when I thought about it for a split second I realized I was wrong.
Yankee Stadium 1 - Visited at the end of 2008 Season as a gift from my father Jack Murphy Stadium - Born in SanDiego, my parents said my first games were the Padres, but I don't recall them at all. Busch Memorial Stadium - Live in the St. Louis Area so I was a regular visitor |

Am I the only one that can put Ebbets Field on the list?
Saw my 1st ML game there in 1953, Dodgers against Phillies & Robin Roberts on the mound. Still have my ticket stub! Here's Ebbets Field today. |

I had no idea, just Googled it, that looks great, not sure if I'll ever be back in Alabama, but would love to visit that place, that outside facade looks awesome!! And the names of the players who played there, no park still standing can boast these names: Cobb, Ruth, Josh Gibson, Williams, Mays, Musial, Jackie Robinson....INCREDIBLE!!! Thanks for posting that. completely unrelated, but fits..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab7eVVG3I8s like Samuel Jackson says, "I'm going" |
Shea Stadium, original yankee stadium, connie mack stadium, veterans stadium, Memorial Stadium (Baltimore)
|
More than I'd thought.
Shea Old Comiskey Atlanta fulton county - But for Olympic baseball Veterans - But for Army-Navy. Got to go on the field briefly after the game. Soon the new Atlanta stadium, but it can only count as half since I was there for Olympic track and field and was in the half they kept to make it a baseball stadium. Oddly all the minor league parks I've been to are still there, at least for now. Wahconah park in Pittsfield Last wooden grandstand around, built in 1919 Municipal stadium in Waterbury - now reconfigured but still used for baseball just not minor league. Lelacheur park Lowell - Newish and really a pretty park. McCoy stadium in Pawtuckett Holman stadium in Nashua. Steve B |

The Birmingham Barons play one Turn Back the Clock game there each season. This year's game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27 and will feature Darryl Strawberry as guest. I recommend adding it to one's travel schedule...

I'm probably off topic with these posts, so I'll stop after this one. When one visits the Rickwood Classic full access to the inside of the scoreboard is included. The entire ballpark is a step back in time...

http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/73...8bdba41824.jpg It's very good and not sympathetic to Robert Moses. It's almost made out that he was indifferent to the Dodgers and Giants possibly moving. If they stayed it was going to be on his terms. |
