April Pickups
Allow me to kick off April with these two cards...
The first is the 78 Brett. One of my favorite close up shots in all of Post War cards. I have owned so many of this card since I was a kid, and this is the cleanest copy I ever have come across. The borders and his face are totally free of the PD that usually plagues the card, plus the centering is there. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...s-george-brett Next up is a nice and square #660 Aaron Mini; the card is so often diamond cut. Not to mention OC. Found this squared up beauty for around twenty bucks on eBay! http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...pps-hank-aaron |

Yet another one for the HOF RC Collection! Slight diamond cut, but it's pretty for a 1.5. I like the fact that the border is not completely shifted over to the right like we often see. On to the next HOF RC.... :)
|
An outstanding looking Aaron rookie for a PSA 1.5. Wow!
Matt, those are a couple of nice looking 70's to start off the month of April. I just picked up a 75 Aaron a week ago that is off to PSA as we speak. Both the Brett and Aaron are about as good as it gets with the centering. Congrats. |
Was not happy with centering but still a good card for my 1952 high numbers.

Am now up to 14 out of 24 with my 1956 Topps Dodgers team set. Goal has been pretty good centering and corners, with this card being a tad nicer than most of my others.
Am planning a fun display in honor of the 60th anniversary of Brooklyn's first and only world championship. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...ecac92edf7.jpg |

Here is another one for my Brooklyn Dodgers World Champs collection. Can you spot what's most unusual about this card?

Very nicely done Jason. I am eager to see the others now. I know this is a big project for you and I'm loving seeing it come together.

superb example, we have the same tastes!! hope you enjoy her!!! |
although a football card and kinda sophomoric, I landed one of my white whales a few days ago and just got her. she's a pop 2 and not sure if psa still grades this card. anyways, this was one of those tough error cards I was in to growing up, even though it's not really an error card, just perfectly time/placed shot!
(kinda pissed at my scanner. it's resolution is too good!! as this scan makes it look like all sorts of imperfections in this card, I can assure you this card is gorgeous in hand) http://caimages.collectors.com/psaim...0_original.jpg |

Great Aaron RC, Jimi!

That Cuellar/Cueller is a beauty. Love that set especially when it is centered. Congrats.
|
Great looking 59s!
Stumbled across this awesomely centered mini Carter RC. Between this and that 660 Aaron I am getting some love with the centered minis. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ps-gary-carter |
I guess I'm on a roll....

....yeah...I can't help myself right now. Picking a few nice ones these days. I'm liking the idea of low to mid grade HOF RCs with nice eye appeal. Hmmmm....you know, the more affordable kind! :)

Nice 59s guys, I've always been partial to that set. I may have to try to finish it one of these days.
In the meantime, I had to go to Houston this week. Got to see the wildflowers along the way. Got home yesterday to this beauty. |

Then today, Mr. FedEx dropped this off. I'm kind of liking April so far.

1971 House of Jazz. Kind of a weird card, and a little later DiMaggio than I like to buy, but also hard to find, I think.

I've been chipping away at the 1960 Leaf baseball set for a couple of years now. The high numbers (73-144) are TOUGH! At our local monthly show yesterday I stopped by my my favorite dealers table and I saw this beauty on display. I don't even remember ever seeing this card? Anyway I bought a big stack of '50s and '60s non sports cards along with this 1960 Leaf card for $25 total. So I would guess this card cost me $3 or $4 max. I took a peak at the price guide when I got home, to find out this is one of the most expensive cards included in the hi numbers (only #125 Sparky Anderson and the last card in the set #144 Jim Bunning book higher). It's a cool card!

How can anyone go wrong for $35?! Some amazing cards out there for low prices. A centered Mantle card from the early 60s!

Unbelievable how you find these gems, Matty! Btw, your Ruth RC and 52 Mick are the ultimate two cards I would love to own-- look as good or better than examples that cost way more.

Picked this beauty up from another board member. By far the most expensive card in my collection. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Great Mick. Keeping the 53T theme alive, here is one card I have been after a long, long while. A true Post War beast to find with eye appeal and even decent centering-- and so hard to find a nice low-grade example.

Just copped this centered Babe from a fellow board member; pretty pumped!

Steve, nice '53 Topps Mick! Still on my want list. :(
|
Damn bro, I was just talking about adding a 53T Maysand another Goudey Ruth to the collection and there they are. Stunning pick ups.
I had some time to burn on an international flit so grabbed a Mays of my own. Thought this would pair really nicely with my 52T Mick. They almost seem separated at birth. http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...psztfrz7x0.jpg This Ryan has been on my want list for a while now. So happy to find one so well centered without having to go high grade. http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...psh4tnfqzw.jpg Also a few Mantles that I slacked on posting: http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6245916e.jpg http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...psf192daf2.jpg |
Funny how much repetition there's been on this thread so far. And here I am copying GregC...at least on one of his beauties!
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...e9412e7f53.jpg |
A lot of "copycat" purchases this month! And here I am copying GregC!
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...5b5177d730.jpg |
Greg,
When you showed me that Mays yesterday I told ya: grab that before I do! What a great card. How often do you see a 52T Mays that centered? The Ryan also. To think you can put that beauty in your wall case for $70-- and see how it looks from 6" to a foot away! Gorgeous. Another one where you can see fifty examples, and none will be as centered as the one you found there. That 52B Mick is safe and sound and will be heading your way soon. The 53T Mick-- still can't believe you out-sniped me on that one! |
Great cards, Greg, Matt, and Jason!
|
back into the groove after my amex was hijacked. she's got a slight tilt to her, but any ryan rook w/ a straight 8 that's priced under $2200 these days is pretty hard to find....

Lots of Ryan sightings this month. Here's an all-time favorite portrait, the card I always choose to represent Yogi:

that's a very nicely centered example matty! tends to be pushed to top left corner or bottom right. love the headshot of the 51

I have wanted a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set since I started collecting around 30 years ago. For some reason I never bought one till a few days ago, I got it from fellow member Paul S(Thanks Paul). I got this amazing set in the mail today.
|
Ben, nice pickup, great set. Congratulations!
|
|
Matt, I think I was looking at that Rose card but gave up when I bid on another. Was that a PSA 3? Great looking card for the money!!!
|
Yup, that was the 3 that sold the other day. The centering and eye appeal were just so nice. To think an 8 runs well over a grand and you can have the exact same image in your collection for seven bucks!
|
finally got home in time to see spieth go wire to wire and to open a lil mail...

Aaron has some great cards. The 62 is one I haven't admired nearly enough. The 67 is pretty sweet, too. Also love the 75 HL card and the 64 HR card, off the cuff. Been cruising eBay a lot this month. The 56 is astounding and among the best centering I've seen on the card.
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...an-stan-musial http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...s-jose-canseco http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle Also snagged these two guys who went for way cheap. I think the 54B will be insane in hand with that anomalous centering. I had already bought the other 51B Berra the other day, but it's so infrequent that nice lower grade ones surface and I love the charming portrait, so went for it. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...psstlhoy2f.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...psahdzeths.jpg |
Fantastic stuff as usual Matt!
I had a good day at the local card show today. where's the Jefferies card over here, matty? :) i loved watching that guy as a kid.
and nice scores tom! that ryan is dead centered and appears to not have any tilt. love me some 71's and that clemente is sharp. always tough to find nice rawies w/o black sharpied edges... |
What show had those two gorgeous cards?!! Outstanding raw pickups. Always prefer that and at a show to boot. Nothing like raw pickups at a show.
On phone now but will post my own Gregg when back at the laptop. I remember certain cards so vividly from childhood, especially the "hot" cards like those Jefferies rookies, and even Rickey Jordan's! |

The '71 Clemente (along with a '71 Lyle and '71 Powell and '69 Ted Williams that are just as nice) were brought by one dealer when I mentioned to him last month about how close I was to finishing those sets. He took down the card numbers that I needed, and he had them set aside for me when I got there today. :) The '68 Ryan does have a couple of surface scratches on the front (one next to the R in Rookie and one going into the purple ball), but it's all about the centering on that card. It will look nice in my raw 1968 set binder though. ;) |
Was watching this one tick down by the second, very nervously! Just saw my snipe prevail. Never saw one below 8s and 9s that had centering I could live with, until this bad boy...

Two more Mantles in the mail today.
A '53 Bowman and a Manny Baseball Land 8 X 10 photo of unknown date, probably from the late '50s or early '60s. Kind of disappointed in the '53. The white marks to the right of his head are on the card, the rest are from the photo. Should have looked at it on the 'puter screen and not the phone. Might have noticed it then. |
Nice pickups Mike. The Manny's photo isn't one I've seen before and the 53 Bowman looks great. If you are concerned with the white spots, you can always go over them with a ball point pen like the previous owners of many of my cards have done. They are hard to see though and it looks very sharp.
|
That 53B Mick is real sharp and those white/cream dots are not uncommon for the card. Worthy of the grade no doubt and presents really nicely.
Found this money looking Raines hiding out on eBay. Also, just got these other ones delivered today and was able to do some proper clear scans at the office, so please do excuse the double images! Always happy when cards in hand surpass expectations from the listing scans. I am really becoming a huge fan of what I guess could be called "phantom" creases, and by that to say creases or wrinkles that appear only in certain, harsh light. This #144 Ruth, for example, loses almost all its creases when viewed in normal light in hand! It's really wild. Then under harsh light of course all its blemishes come out, but I always view my cards under normal light conditions. Can save bundles. My 1933 Goudey Gehrig has the same phenomenon; under harsh light, a vertical wrinkle/crease right down his torso; but in hand in normal light, the crease/wrinkle is completely gone! http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ded-tim-raines http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-babe-ruth-144 http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...man-yogi-berra http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle |

This bad boy was listed for all of about 4 seconds last night, LOL! Talk about a card found brutally centered 99% of the time.

Nice Hank Allen!
|
Somehow Ole Hank was never able to capture the magic of his brief 1966 sampling, in which he rapped out a .387 avg and .441 OBP in 35 ABs. His 53Ks in 292 ABs the following year did not bode well for him.
|
Matt, I don't think strike outs was the reason that Hank Allen didn't have much of a MLB career. His 53Ks in 1967 was 17.2% of his plate appearances, and for his MLB entire career, Hank struck out in only 13.6% of his PAs (PAs are more meaningful than ABs, IMHO). FYI, supposed phenom Bryce Harper has struck out in 21.8% of his PAs thus far in his career, including 40% of his PAs in his first 8 games of 2015!

Another Mantle. It's not as centered as I would like (yes, I've caught MattC-itis :D), but it's got great color. I suppose some, looking at you Chris :p, might suggest I trim the left side to even out the borders (that would also take care of the soft top left corner).
