EBay... there were two others with the same design Dino Restilli and Vic Lombardi. I went with the Kiner. 1949 was his career year. Who says smoking is bad for you?:D

As an avid collector of 3D cards in my youth, I only remember the "All-Time Greats" set coming out in Rold Gold Pretzel bags. I have been searching for the Kellogg's Danish box for years, and was thrilled to finally find one, along with the two Raisin Bran boxes. They were all unfolded, but I turned them into boxes for display purposes.

My newest Lou.
1939 type 1 of Lou sitting on the steps of the dugout. Dated June 22nd 1939. I got it in a trade with another board member(Thanks Mark). It's not the greatest condition, but a very nice image nonetheless.

This just arrived. The girlfriend is going to love coming home to me watching the playoffs from behind a real home plate
|
What she's really going to love is you digging a pentagonal hole in the living room floor.

1936 Cincinnati Reds Jacket
1 Attachment(s)
Wonderful style that I have been looking for for some time. Manufactured by P. Goldsmith & Sons; Cincinnati, Ohio. The embroidered design on each sleeve is the same design found on the left breast of the "Palm Beach" uniforms also produced by Goldsmith for the 1936 Reds.
Quality of the photograph of the jacket does not do it justice... Dave Grob DaveGrob1@aol.com |

Mark - that is, obviously, another great Gehrig image. Congratulations on the pick up. I'm not finding a 'Lou Gehrig Photo' section in the link area you have - if there isn't one there should be :) |
Scott,
Thanks. Here is the section where the Gehrig photos reside. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/lord...Gehrig%20stuff BTW, I had no idea home plate was that big. Pretty cool item. |

I highly recommend these - one of the coolest things I've ever picked up. Wish I had one from the Astrodome. |

1925 Christy Walsh Syndicate calendar page featuring Babe Ruth and Cobb. Thanks Al!
|
Jeff,
Great calendar. It reminded me of something I forgot to post along the same lines. 1928 Letter from the Christy Walsh Syndicate. Letter is to the Yankees asking to borrow Babe Ruth's white uniform. At the bottom are the printed autographs of all his clients. I also got the envelope it was sent in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...alshletter.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...erenvelope.jpg |
Very interesting. It's the "white" uniform, and not the pinstriped uniform (as we'd refer to it today.) In those days there were just home whites and road greys. The details--pinstripes, etc.--were irrelevant.

Sal Maglie no-hit game and 1956 World Series Game 1 congrats Western Union telegrams
2 Attachment(s)
I picked up a couple of neat Western Union congratulatory telegrams that were sent to Sal "The Barber" Maglie following his no-hitter and win in Game 1 of the 1956 World Series vs. the NY Yankees.
Maglie apparently saved several of these telegrams and they subsequently surfaced in the hobby following his passing in 1992. These two originated from two fellow Italian American families that knew him and sent their well wishes. Ironically, Sal Maglie was also on the wrong side of another no-hitter in 1956. Maglie was the losing pitcher in Don Larsen's historic World Series perfect game (Game 5) on October 8, 1956, less than two weeks following Maglie's no no. |

I like those colorful and personal Western Union no-hit telegrams to Sal Maglie. Here's a telegram from Texas Senator J. Tower sending his congrats to a no hit pitcher in the '60s |
I got this as a gift from one of our board members (thank you!). My understanding is that it was personally owned by Red Schoendienst. It will make an excellent companion piece to a Red Schoendienst signed hunting license I have, so I could not be happier to add it to the collection.

Couple of odd Cleveland Stadium pickups. The seats I've had for years, finally got around to refinishing them. (I know, they aren't exact, but they look great.) The Browns' trunk is from the 90's. I bought it at a local auction, and it was so darned cheap I had to get it. Now I store crap in it; it beats plastic tubs.

(but terrible for making out) |
Just received this baseball used in NLDS Game 2 - 18 inning game. It's a Tim Hudson strikeout pitch to Denard Span. The MLB TV replay shows Hudson spitting in his hand and then rubbing the ball up. How did he get away with that?

If you watch the scene on MLB tv, it really looks like he is spitting. I watched it several times, incredulous.
Bob - that is news to me (about getting the umpires permission). I can see blowing in your hands to keep them warm, but getting permission to spit in your hands and then rub the spit on the baseball? Isn't that all that is involved in creating the classic illegal spitball? Don't get me wrong - I love owning a modern spitball :) |
I could be wrong but I think the rule is you can go to your mouth as long as you're not standing on the rubber.
|
So, is the logic that during the one second it takes to turn and step back on the rubber, the spit dries up?
|
It was a quick spit, but here it is. No way this can be mistaken for blowing air on his hands:
