Starting off the month with a C.1960 Ballantine Beer Roberto Clemente photo advertisement
|
Got me a 1975 Topps Mini complete set of the B/S/T. I've been wanting a set from my birth year and got a gem of a set.

Congrats on the set. Nothing like completing a set quickly!!

A great Clemente Ballantine Beer pickup. Very cool! I picked up these 2 Bench cards. I am only 2 cards away from finishing the basic set.

Fairly new to the site, but I got my SGC package back yesterday, and was very excited to see the results of my 1969 Reggie Jackson and Joe DiMaggio. I will also throw in a pic of another DiMaggio card that arrived in the mailbox. Thought I would try and share these on the board.
|
Nice pickups on the exhibits. It is ironic that you posted these as I picked up 75 of them today that came along with a batch of other cards. I had no background on exhibit cards but did some research and learned a lot about the different years printed and how to tell. I will post a few of them later when I scan them.
|
Congrats Sean those are some nice grades. What company made the Jackson and Dimaggio card? I have not seen one of those before.
|
Thanks!
These are from the 1969 Oakland A's Andersen set (also called Jack in the Box, erroneously). Not to be confused with the 1969 Oakland Broder (I have a DiMaggio Broder also). |
That Jackie
Neat stuff...what is the printing on the label of the Robinson photo ? That looks like a Team Issue from the 1940's ?? Thanks and keep on the hunt.
|
Exactly. It is the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers Picture Pack Jackie Robinson. I have the entire set, in addition to the Cleveland Indians set, so I got Robinson and Paige put into holders. Someday, I will send everyone in.
|
1948 Jackie
...great 1948 Dodgers...so you have Snider and Hodges and Furillo and Reese and Miksis etc ? Neat ... can you tell us how much it costs to have one of those graded ? They're bigger than exhibit cards. Thanks
|
I think it was like twenty bucks (as opposed to seven bucks each for the other cards). But I think they have specials sometimes, so maybe you can do it even cheaper?
|
My bday month so gotta come strong out the box!
* The 1976 Ryan was a PSA 7 bought for $44 that was cracked and resubmitted; knew off the bat it was a sick undergrade mistake. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...81/raw-pickups http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...pps-nolan-ryan |
Wow, Matty...did you get another Jackie to replace the stolen one??
The 69 also has the WL name version, you gonna take a stab at it too? i lost out on some stuff recently, maybe try again at the end of the month |
Chris,
Snagged this WL with some of the best centering on the card and lack of tilt I have seen, let alone in lower grade. Have a special section in my collectorfocus.com gallery now for all my Mantles, which is in my signature line. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle |

I don't collect graded cards, but when they come along at a good price, I jump all over 'em. The '64 Stand Ups are one of my favorite sets of all time and grabbing a PSA 9 from the '72 high series (not to mention it's Bubba Smith!) is always a great move…

Big
Big fan of that '58 Mantle. Speaking of Mantle a nice pick-up for me to help ease my pain of having to sell my '57 bb set:

Hey Chris- that 59 #10 Mantle. nice, but says ADVERTISING PANEL??
What the back look like? like a regular back i assume, if so, how can ya tell if it wasnt some 5 yr old chomping at it with scissors? I just figured it be a perforated? |
|
Quote:
This was part of a three card panel--just like the one you sold a while back. I am not sure the back on this one as I don't have it in hand yet, but I believe it is the back of another card. |
Impulse buy to go with my set.............

Thanks.....light crease and I NEVER know if I got robbed on something like this but it's a great add to my set.....
When I see the prices that one seller has these on ebay for, this one was had for a small fraction of those.......... |

First BB card I've bought in probably 15 years! |
Wow-- been looking for a Fisk just like that! Amazing value on the 7s and they can look great.
The Berra/Mantle is another favorite card. |

Those AS cards rock; the star design is great-- the Mick is a favorite.
These came in the mail today... http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ackie-robinson http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle |
Great pickup with the Carlton Fisk!! Would love to get my hands on a 7 that looks that good. Congrats!
|
Great Fisk. That is not a card you see centered very often. Also loving that 1950 Bowman Jackie. Such a nicer looking card than his 52 Topps.
I have been very quiet since my Jan/Feb Mantle explosion. Back on it and added these to the collection. The marked "6" is on the sleeve, not the 68 Mick. http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...ps19dc7b9f.jpg http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle |
Well done on the Mick pickups! Any plans on grading them?

It turns out there was a picture of the back on the ebay listing: http://host.jwcinc.net/712533/brent/2014_7/701_26_4.jpg Got this other oddball item today: http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...ps124a021a.jpg |
It has been a few years now; been seeking one of these centered to pair up with the freak Carew I found last year. Not a pair you see centered every day...

MattyC, Nice pickup on the the Seaver rookie. I think I remember seeing you post the Carew rookie. If I recall the centering on that card was near perfect if not perfect especially for the grade.
|
|
Matty C - I have looked/flipped through hundreds of '67s. That Carew is ridiculously centered. Very well done. Did you just happen upon it on E-Bay?
|
Yoss--
Me, too; I must have had a search for "1967 Topps Carew" every day for years, hoping to find a centered one--- and then one day saw that card. It was an SGC 88 from a longtime SGC set builder. He had it listed on eBay as he'd recently upgraded to a 9. I could not buy it fast enough. Crossed it for uniformity at the time and was a bit shocked-- the grade does not match the eye appeal by a longshot. Looks like an 8.5 or even a 9 on a good day. Would be among the last cards I'd ever sell if I had to, due to the rarity of the centering. In the right light at the right angle, a small wax stain is barely visible along the bottom center border; perhaps that takes it from a 9 to a 7. |

Nice cards, Matt.....I can't see what's wrong with that Seaver...looks like at least an 8 all day long. I am expecting some cards back from PSA today that I'll post, but in the meantime here's one I picked up for my "Should be in the Hall of Fame" Rookie Collection...
|
1975 Topps Mini Pete Rose
A cheap upgrade to my set. I have seen worst off centered 1975s, so I will just think of it as PSA thought the field was off centered.

MattyC- that Seaver is amazing for a 5.
Picked up this Mantle in an eBay side deal. Great looking card and clean sig. I'm absolutely re-addicted to signed cards (first binge was while getting them signed as a kid... still have all those) Attachment 160926 Also snagged this Oh as BIN, couldn't resist adding it to my small, but growing Oh collection Attachment 160927 ... and a signed Joe D Attachment 160935 |

I continue to pick up variations, however, one tough variation from the 60s has eluded me for years, unitl now. I finally came across a sharp looking 68 Mike McCormick WL embedded(but pictured) in a lot I ended up bidding on and winning. The lot was a 200 +/- card lot that I bid (knowing this card was included) on Sunday right after the great ebay outage of Sept '14 ended, so I wonder if the outage caused other prospective bidders to miss seeing this card as part of the offered lot?

Just picked up this Mick from Ebay! Could not believe this one was available for a reasonable price. Listed as BIN or Best Offer. I had no problem clicking on the BIN. I did not want someone else to grab this why I was waiting on a Best Offer response.

If I saw that a second before you it would have been gone!

A few I sent in to PSA

Bought these raw and got them back from PSA last week....Slightly disappointed with the Ashburn and Marichal grades, thrilled with the Yogi grade..didn't think that was going to crack 3....if nothing else, I did get a gorgeous '61 Juan and '49 Richie for my rookie collection...maybe re-grade candidates someday...guess that soft lower-left corner on the Juan cost me a grade (though the scan makes it look far worse than it actually does in person). Anyway...I love the cards, and that's all that matters..thrilled to have them in my collection!
|
Nice looking cards Carl. Definitely looks like the one corner is dragging down your grade. He is a favorite of mine though so if it were mine it would be a 10 in my heart! :)

Just picked up this nice 1954 Topps Phil Rizzuto thanks to the Net54 group break.:D
|
Super strong month by the crew here.
CW, you always impress with your eye. The Fidrych looks like a 10. The 71 Clemente looks like an 8.5. And the Campy Franks is not a card in every collection. Major props. I am hoarding centered 53B Micks...actually all centered Micks, but especially this one... http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mickey-mantle |
MattyC I must have beat you to this one. I was very happy to find this one available. Your PSA 2.5 has got to be higher than that! Is something on the back bringing the grade way down? That 2.5 beats most graded cards of the 53 Bowman Mick. Recently sold a raw 53 Bowman Mantle that was just not very appealing to the eye and figured I would wait to find a suitable replacement. Just found this one on Ebay a couple of days ago.
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-mantle-bowman |
Here's the crazy deal with that 2.5-- the reverse has literally two letters among the bio text that are faded. That's it. That knocked it all the way down. A strong resub or crack-resub candidate for sure. The front beats every 8 I have handled.
I liked that 3 very much and came very close to pulling the trigger, actually ;) One thing I have noticed with The Mick's cards is that so few of the existing pop are beautifully centered. On some issues it is on the order of 1/100 or worse it seems. I think that rarity is very cool and can be something collectors seek over time. |
