After CJ 14s--what will be the next set to truly take off?
I'm wondering if it's Turkey Reds--has been building and many have long wondered why has never happened before. Although it may just be the 4s and 5s. Of course, the answer might be-- CJ 15s...
Your nomination? |
COUPONS OF ALL VARIETIES..."OVERSIZED" T3'S WILL NEVER TAKE OFF imo!
|
Maybe T205s? IMO one of the most aesthetically pleasing sets in our hobby.
|
nothing will eclipse the greatness of 14 cj's
this set has it ALL
mainstream set not too big not too small huge star power rarities throughout association with all American brand of cj condition impossible (weeds out "condition snobs" - lol) what more can you ask for? but back to the topic - next set to take off? some other sort of similar characteritics candy "E" set imo. |
I think it's about time for the T206 set to have its time in the sun.
-Al |
I'd go with Leon's pick and say T205's-- alongside the 1915 CJ's.
Though I love the D304s. |
Leon, haven't the t205s been picked to take off...for years? I agree with you but not trending that way at all. I feel same way about m116s but they are going nowhere....and, of course, OJs continue to decline...

Yeah! I still laugh over this '86 Sandberg that brought $2,426. And yes, that is in US dollars. http://smalltraditions.com/1986-topp...r-lot2473.aspx On a serious note, I think that the E90-1/2/3 sets might be next to take off. |

The 1914 CJ set is very odd in many respects. I don't know how the set is regarded by a typical pre war collector, or by any of longtime collectors on the board.
I know everyone likes how they look, but it's not like other sets. I mean, it's hard to be picky about condition because cardboard is so thin. Stains on nearly every card. Not a lot of cards available to begin with, despite eBay and the internet making most all cards from most all sets plentiful, or at least available. Is the 1914 set viewed as sort of a cult-like following thing, but just not a "mainstream" set because of all the obstacles? I'd love to know what longtime collectors think... |

On a serious note, I'd love to see T205s get some more respect. They're absolutely gorgeous, they've got a great selection of HOFers and variations, rare backs, print freaks, tougher minor leaguers, and can be collected in all different ways. REALLY undervalued and underappreciated set.
I was looking through a pile of T205s with Piedmont 42 backs recently with another collector, and marveling at how scarce they were - and how few people are aware of that. The Cobb is, in my opinion, one of the most attractive prewar cards. -Al |
I love T205's and T206's get plenty of attention . With this economy I think it will be Play Ball's .
|
I think there's still hope for 1988 Donruss. The blue/red/black border designs are tough and the wax is drying up.......LITERALLY, drying up..........

I've been hearing a lot of buzz about 1921 Herpolsheimers.
|
whatever sets we all think
let's this time each take a different set to pursue, and stop murdering each other all going after exact same thing - thx! :)
|
There was an amazing M116 selection on Memory Lane last weekend which provided a good test on whether they will ever gain. The HOFers did well but the commons died--and most of them were PSA 8s and most with "none higher." As usual with M116s, half were gorgeous color and half were ugly. But you could get an 8 with low pop and none higher for about 250--and they sold for at least 50 more recently. So if anything, going down...

T2 NO 5s!
I've posted these before, but I feel like it may be time to remind everyone why T205s are often downright hideous:
The players look ugly... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hljfnnhb13wn9SxZoxoj2IRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v6-hj-upAVo/UTd_d3bpWYI/AAAAAAAAQ7g/kEF7ctBpDzc/s800/Butthead.jpg" height="191" width="341" /></a> They are often making sour faces... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/BnSfYjdjnDVWogCw8OksnIRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eRZEaPt02qo/UTd_eLBPpHI/AAAAAAAAQ7o/Le8JsfuRLAk/s800/CrankyFace.jpg" height="265" width="796" /></a> They look like catfish, or at least like they're burping... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QTbTXE4Dt5aq8xppRHrcwYRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-McGsrI_NsDI/UTd_eZj1SxI/AAAAAAAAQ8E/ZWuB-StQN8w/s800/Catfish.jpg" height="168" width="800" /></a> There's just something garishly plastic about them... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HOaYkXIdZ_OKDgdXnQWQmYRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k0TMk1kZ5Qo/UTd_fCK3EPI/AAAAAAAAQ78/qBaiYCx8rH8/s800/SpittingImagePuppets.jpg" height="217" width="800" /></a> Check out the ears on these guys... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cQOnAgJsjzZz9QYUswpqXIRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8cMXW-QEl1s/UTd_fC_nPQI/AAAAAAAAQ74/3zEtsaVgr3U/s800/Yoda.jpg" height="169" width="628" /></a> Check out the huge foreheads on these dudes... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/7nKq-Gl_jZRumrlZ5KLdIYRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fPtpjUULXRA/UTeqvaZxMUI/AAAAAAAAQ8s/5-I5nZLpYww/s800/Big%2520Bald%2520Head.jpg" height="184" width="800" /></a> The Joker? <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/lgFeX26YKDL_ZM2-Djm2qYRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-igma-YXNg5M/UTeqvZRpc1I/AAAAAAAAQ8o/TNvdc_3TySw/s800/Joker.jpg" height="288" width="657" /></a> Egan's just horsey in ANY set... <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FnN7M2cr5-D2pC_kNW0rD4RT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IViQKv_R19Y/UTevjpqITdI/AAAAAAAAQ9E/gXN0ClvN1Bw/s800/Egan.jpg" height="216" width="655" /></a> However, I will concede that I do so love this Blackburne, and not entirely because he signed it: <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iVe3cS1fBYYtk0omcVuDh4RT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DbgjlV2jsgI/UQl2Q9HsnPI/AAAAAAAAQ3o/CftcjH1_frw/s800/T205BlackburneFTnBK.jpg" height="642" width="800" /></a> |

I'm hoping no E90-1 or E92 surges until I can complete my sets. My attempt at CJs went to pot when the prices soared so I would like some collecting good fortune for a change :)

1933 Goudey cards but not until we near their centennial.

I think for the most part it's a great set.
|
The gold border artist(s) definitely spent more time on Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson than the other subjects.
|
Johnson, Young and Matty look fine. Cobb looks like his cheeks and chin are swollen and his eyes are too close together ...also his ears stick out.
I know a lot of folks seem to like the T205 Cobb, but it's not a very attractive image of the man's face. So many better choices out there. |

His eyes were close together. And his ears stuck out.

Not to steer this post too o/t, but looking at this Sandberg - is that not a huge stain on the back where it says 'talkin baseball'? My memory of 86 backs is a little fuzzy but I don't seem to remember that being part of it? http://smalltraditions.com/ItemImage..._2473c_lg.jpeg |
You have posted your assesment often, but I went ahead and fixed it for you.

Love this t206-t206 smackdown. Then again I haven't lived through it 14 times already.
|
I love the T205's - the vignettes on the back are hilarious. Love the different ads, colors. Put in the camp of "let's postpone liftoff until I have my set".
I do like the variety of poses in the T206. |

Less artistic liberties were taken with the portraits in T206 than T205. And Tinker looks WAY cooler than Ace Ventura. More like THE WOLVERINE!!!

Thought about this for a while.... I am partial to t205s but I don't think it will be them. The stars just aren't that attractive, the cobb and johnson and young are 3 of the worst cards in the set, the pictures are too small and the quality of the cobb and young are off. This coming from a t205 fanboy. It won't be the 06's either, set is too big and already has press so it would've happened by now. My verdict? 1932 us caramel. Blazing color, amazing player selection, low numbers, smallish set.
|
Yeah, U.S. Caramel a good pick. I would also mention similarly tough and with tons of stars--and better looking--the George C. Millers. I think they are climbing already. Maybe not enough of them to draw wide action.

I'm drooling it is an awesome example, but cobb in my opinion deserved a better portrait, Mathewson's is of a much higher artistic quality. |

I'm coming around on cobb but if you compare the 06 and 05 portraits of cobb, Johnson and young, to me it's a no brainer. Whereas Mathewson, Marquard, bresnahan and other hofers the 05s compare much better, but yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Peter those cards are amazing, particularly love grove.
|
Anyone know why even most of the better grade 1932 Caramels tend to look slightly "dirty" on borders and back? Something about the paper stock?
|
I was thinking acidic paper stock?
|
Love those T205's. And that WaJo Hindu is umbelievable.

I don't know what is next but I don't think it is T205. The cards are great, especially in good condidtion, but unless you have a fairly high grade the chipping on the gold border really detracts from the card. In order for a set to really take off I think it helps if the lower grades have a little more eye appeal relative to other sets in low to mid grades.

So I didn't answer earlier and I'm kind of reviving this thread, but here's my pick for the next set to "pop." It just got a lot of press being featured in the PSA card series "Cards that never were" and these fantasy pieces were given away or were prizes during the National. I think the set is beautiful, there's enough around for new collectors to start picking them up, and they got some free press. |
I would say the E94s but there aren't enough of them out there right now so collectors would get discouraged. There needs to be eye appeal plus demand plus a decent supply. The Black Swamp cards killed the E98 set. If I had to start loading up on cards from a set because of a possible run, I would load up on T213-2 (1914) Coupons while they are still reasonably priced. The 1919 Coupons (series 3) and the series 1 cards are too rare for collectors and would only cause frustration. The M116s, E90-3s and T207s all have room to grow and increase in price but each has it's own baggage which will keep the current prices contained.
Yup, I would go for the T213-2 but keep an eye on the T210s and early Zeenut sets which have a growing number of niche collectors... |
