June Pickups
A nice start to the month with a new addition to my '52 Topps set. My goal is to find cards with only the best centering, and this one fits in nicely!

Nice card!
|
Great looking card for a PSA 6! If only all my cards had the centering of this.
|
Bartirome
Nice high # card. His only season was 52. He was a sandlot player prior to 1952. An example of the many marginal players ( some never making it in the ML) and coaches that were included in the 52 Topps set during their contract wars with Bowman
|
That is a great 6! Nice pick up! When I was on the grounds crew at SD Stadium '75 - '77, he was the Pirates trainer. I gave him his '52T and '53T to sign, which he happily did. But not B4 delightfully showing the cards around to younger Pirates in the dugout, who were young enough to be his kids. My impression nearly 40 years later: helluva nice guy!
|
That's a great story Dave! Nice to have those kinds of memories to recall.

Picked up these 3 1966 Topps off COMC today. They all have a nice slight print offset and everyone should have a Mossi card.
|
That Mossi is one handsome fellow

And speaking of marginal players in the '52 set...how about poor Johnny Kucab? He disappears after '52, this is his only card, and it seems to be the lowest valued card in the whole high series. I've seen cards of his that have sat on ebay for years. He just doesn't sell. |

Just picked up these 3 today. I hope to add some more before the month is over.

My Great White Rhino has arrived. Been wanting this card since I was a kid in the 80's.

Brooksie card
Love the Brooksie card!

Nice pickups, guys.

Again, nothing truly spectacular, but some cool 1972 cards. First, I picked up 3 more PSA 8 high numbers…
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/...ps70c9a8f0.jpg And then we have another of the absolutely toughest 'In Action' cards to ever find decently centered. The Haller is off-the-charts insane to find like this!! The McGinn is the variation version where part of the top border is sheared off. What's notable about this card is the error isn't a function of being off-center top to bottom. You find it on perfectly centered cards, too. Attachment 147218 |

1972 & Maris
Very nice cards, Darren. I really like the 72 set for their colors.
And I have always liked Roger as a Cardinal. He helped them have very good years in 67 &. 68. He later got a beer distributorship from the Bush family for his service. That situation/relationship did become a little contentious after his death |

Picked up this 1964 Topps Yaz and expect more 64 Topps in the mail today. Centering is a little off but the price was right.
Starting a complete set of 1964 Topps. Will start with graded stars and then fill in with EX - NMT commons. |

1964 Mantle
Edit: Sorry, let me work on getting a bigger scan. |
Need my binocs but that Mick looks pretty amazing.
That 57 Robinson and Ted are centered fantastically-- would love to have either of those. Great eye. |

Apparently 1964 Topps are taking over for the time. Nice pickup of 64's. Just picked up these two for a great price. Was not on my want list but came across them when I went to a seller's house to look at a 1958 PSA 8 Mays and 1967 PSA 7 Mantle that he was selling for one of his relatives. He says he had some cards that he got from his father and was going to get rid of them. The price was right so I had to take and put the Mays and Mantle on hold. I hope to pick them up in the next or so.

Got this 2nd year Bob Gibson today in the mail.
|
K-Nole,
Gibson is on my bucket list from rookie on up. I have a lot of his later years but none of the early. Nice pick up. |
1960
My favorite Gibson card
|
Quote:
yep, the exact reason I got this. I am putting his regular issue "set" together. his 62 is looking to be an issue:( |

Gibson
The 59 set is one of my favorites and the first Topps set I finished. But Bob Gibson is not pink
I have all his Topps cards but bought most long ago. What does the 62 go for these days ? |
The cheapest on EBAY is $60 RAW. Not looking good for me
|
Crossed these babies.
This Carew blew me away-- never saw one centered like this. Two of the harsher grades I've had, though. I was thinking 8.5 and 8.

Russ-some really nice '64s there. That set is growing on me. I was looking at some '64 Yankees last night as I watched 61* on Blu Ray. The '64 Topps is probably my favorite Roger Maris card. |
Quote:
Love the Carew. I have not found one that centered. Great score. I would have to agree with the harsh grade of 7. Looks 8+ to me. |
Went to a show today and picked up a few all-time greats (plus a really nice, but a bit o/c, 1972 Topps Pistol Pete Maravich card)…

Bazooka Day, eh?
|
I probably overpaid a bit for this but this variation is insanely rare and was one of my white whales (been looking for 2-3 years now):
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODQ2WDExND...Tl9HU/$_57.JPG |
Very nice pick up, Chris!! Congrats on knocking one of your white whales off!
|
Bunch of awesome stuff this month.
That show grouping of raw has some of my favorite looking cards-- namely 73 Aaron and Clemente. Great action shots. The 52 Mays is insane. Then the Bazooka Mick and that rare variation for Chris?! June is strong! |
1964 Raw Niekro RC
2 Attachment(s)
Getting a 1964 Topps set started this month. This is my first raw card addition. What grade would you give this card ? Looks like a solid 7 / NMT to me.
Found the writing on the back of the card to be very interesting. Niekro was being groomed as relief pitcher in 1963-64. There were not too many of them around in the early 60's. Little did they know he would go on to win 300 + games despite very little run support on some poor Braves teams. It says he worked for Uncle Sam in 1963. Any one know what he did ? |
1978 SO Leaders / Ryan - Niekro
2 Attachment(s)
This card is not valuable but I love it ! Strikeout Leaders Card of Nolan Ryan and Phil Niekro. Talk about opposite tactics in accumulating strikeouts. Arguably the greatest knuckle baller of all time and arguably the greatest fast baller of all time on the same card, leading the NL and AL in SO in the same season.
|
Koufax Who am I?
1 Attachment(s)
Was happy to find this in such a high grade.
|
Thanks Bill and Matt! Nice cards everyone. I love the Bazookas and really cool Who Am I.
Below are my latest acquisitions. I am attaching a photo of the collection and then some pictures of the stars. The Mantle is the only one that really fits into my collection, so I'll be piecing the others out in the near future. Still trying to decide whether to get them graded (some have pin holes), leave them as is, try to get them in an auction, consign them or sell them on eBay/Net54 (I don't want to hijack the thread but any thoughts would be appreciated via PM). http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...ps93e50801.jpg http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402712691 http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402712482 http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402712646 |

Just added this one to my collection. Not on my want list but it when I saw the centering I had to have it. Anyone else ever fall into the trap of impulse buying?
|
'57 Brooks
Super excited about this recent pick-up! BTW, I am loving the cards everyone has posted so far this month!

impulse buying
My only impulse buying are variants for my sets that are not in SCD, Becketts or the Regisrty, but that appeal to me for some reason. Everything else is on a list...or should be
|
Another '59 Bz SP & a Spahn RC
|
Really nice Spahn.
|
Great Spahn and great price. I was going after that one too, but decided that an upgrade simply wasn't necessary. But that 20 is about as good as it gets w/ that tough issue.
|

Picked up this trio at a show today. The 1961 Mantle was way cheap, the 1965 Banks isn't too great, but it's a tough card to find, and the 1964 'Tops In NL' is absolutely killer!!
Attachment 149888 |
Picked up a small lot of 1974 OPC Cardinals for a reasonable price recently. Far and away the most scarce of the 70s opc issues due to a production strike at the factory that year. I only need 13 more to complete my team seat!
http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...ps21325876.jpg |
Great cards guys, I really love that 57 Williams in the SGC 84 holder.
|

By the way, is it just me, or does it look like Mick had one of his legendary nights before this shot was taken? :p |

Reggie Cleveland's 74 Topps/OPC card is interesting, in that it must have been a pretty low attendance day at the ballpark when they took that picture.

Reggie Cleveland....
....posts over on CU, but here he is just a cheeseburger

Another for the HOF Rookies

Not sure if the scan does this justice...if only the top to bottom centering were a little more true...but wow, was I thrilled when I got this in the mail on Saturday!

Wally Yonanine
I was fortunate to find a 1952 Bromide in ex condition of Wally Yonamine a United States Athlete in the Japan Pro Baseball League, scan to follow

A very nice score on the Stargell rookie! Congrats.

Love that Ted card...Robert thats a awesome p/up. Nice job on the centering

Thanks, Chris. Yeah, I think Ted is strong for the grade for sure.

The 53 Musial is one of my all time favorites! Nice pick up!
