May pickups
4 Attachment(s)
I just received this scorebook from the Walter Johnson Memorial unveiling in 1947. The scorebook has some terrific content on WaJo's career in baseball.
This is a nice compliment to a ticket from the same game that I bought a few years ago... |

Picked up this beauty on eBay, it is kind of hard to see but pitcher is etched into the side. I believe this is from 1902 and made by Meridan. The inscription reads "Presented to Edwin Werk by the Anti-Knocking Club"
Any help on this would be appreciated. |
"Any help on this would be appreciated..."
Bob: The only "help" I can offer would be to take it off your hands.... though I doubt that would really be appreciated ;) Congrats on the gorgeous acquisition! |
Nice pitcher. It reminds me of Indiana Jones when the bad guy "Chose....Poorly"

Had to pick up this WWII photo. It's Luke Sewell batting during a USO trip in Burma in 1945. It matches perfectly with the ball I have from this trip that was signed by Luke!

My second signed postcard to go with the Ruth I already have. Thought this was cool even though the conditions is rougher than I normally like. I'll have it certified once I get it but it has 100% money back guarantee with it. Just in case.

Thanks for the info.
I have no idea what size this is actually. I saw another one on eBay that the crop looks a bit different but that really means nothing on overall size. I just knew it was a Burke on an AZO 1926-40's RPPC. Just thought it was cool and figured it was from his playing days. As for the signature I have no idea if its real as it looks totally different than most of the signatures I've seen from him. |

Nate, how many bats do you have? Are you a hoarder? :p
Bats are addicting (or addictive?). I purchased my first vintage one and before I knew it, there were ten leaning against the wall in the corner. Then there were fifteen. Then I sold all but one to protect myself. (In that last sentence there should be a comma after "one", but I liked the accidental double entendra.) |

Vander Meer Holy Grail pickup now off the list
6 Attachment(s)
I finally was able to cross one of my holy grail items off the list last week. :)
Here is a scored game used scorebook from Johnny Vander Meer's 2nd consecutive no-hitter on June 15, 1938 at Ebbets Field. Vandy's back-to-back no hitters are considered to be one of the most unassailable records in baseball. |

Great pickup Scott. Nice to cross something like that off your list.
I added another Kansas World Tour item to my collection. The neat thing is this ball park is still there and being used. |
Quote:
Congrats Scott. Do you have the first one as well? |
Quote:
I do not have a scored program from Vandy's 1st no-hitter, Mark. I'm still looking. I know of at least one or two in the hobby. I saw one of them up close on display at the Reds Museum in Cincinnati earlier this year.... |

No-Hiitter pitchers thru July 22, 1920
Here's something you should enjoy, Scott.
I picked up a few Mid-Week pictorials with nice baseball content a couple of weekends ago in an antique shop. This was among them. It is dated July 22, 1920. http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2b3a4b95.jpg http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...psed9f8515.jpg http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps5d9ba978.jpg |

Mickey Mantle pick-ups
Picked up these Mickey Mantle photos this week and the article two weeks ago.
http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps91fdff13.jpg http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps59820cba.jpg This next thing is ugly...I don't know what the guy was thinking when he framed it, but I'm glad he saved it. Dated April 16, 1951 from the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger. It reads in part: Mickey Mantle, sensational New York Yankee rookie, celebrated his promotion to the varsity yesterday by banging out a home run and three singles. It was an exhibition game against the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, but it was his first game as a major leaguer, in a major league stadium. http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...psd023d41a.jpg |

Picked up a hoard of stuff from one single garage sale yesterday...about 800-1000 1952-59 baseball cards...overall in excellent to mint condition. Super Bowl 1 and 3 programs, 1948 Army v Navy Program, 1933 Nebraska v Oklahoma football program, other misc programs...a shoebox full of 1960-70 Topps football, basketball and baseball cards....and about 100 snapshot photos from the 1980s of Kansas City Royals games. My brother found the sale and texted me to hit an ATM and get my butt over to the sale he was at ASAP. :D

Flock on top
When's the last time any of you saw the Dodgers referred to as "the flock" (as in Robins)?
Terrific historical content in that paper but agreed that the frame job is sorely lacking. Quote:

Cincinnati Redlegs Uniform

Just picked this up last night; 1959 Willard Schmidt road jersey with 1958 Smoky Burgess pants. This is the last style of Redlegs vest I needed (1956-1966).
Still looking for a 1955 home or road Cincinnati jersey with either style patch (square or contour) and have hundreds of flannels and jackets (all teams) available to trade for one. Dave Grob DaveGrob1@aol.com |

As a pin collector, this is one of my favorite pickups in years -- a 1922-23 Kolb's wall-hanging advertising piece. It's a companion piece to the Kolb's pin set. 7 inches wide. Just got it today.

Nice pickup, Greg! It's in great shape too!

Awesome piece Greg! I was wondering who ended up with that beauty!

Nice Kevin!
I just completed a trade with fellow board member Randall Hahn. Here is a ticket stub from HOF'er Rube Waddell's record setting 1904 season in which he struck out 349 batters. Rube was the winning pitcher in the game played on June 25, 1904 at Philadelphia. The A's bested the Washington Senators 6-3. Waddell owned the major league record for single season strikeouts until Sandy Koufax passed him with 382K's in 1965. Nolan Ryan since set the modern standard of 383K's in 1973. Thanks Randall! ;) :) Disclaimer: I don't own this RPPC of Rube and Matty, but I love the image! |
Awesome piece, Scott. And that postcard is unreeeaalll.

Actually, I can help. These tickets originated from a large collection of early Philadelphia Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies tickets of games that were attended by one Philadelphia fan. This collection first entered the hobby in the early 1990's and were purchased by George Kennigsberg (sp?) who at the time owned and operated the Monterey Bay Sports Museum in Northern California. All of these tickets had the year and score written on the front in pencil which was later overwritten with vintage steel-tipped black fountain pen by the patron. It's interesting to note that many teams did not issue tickets with dates (year) making it challenging to determine exact vintage. The other thing which is noteworthy about this collection was that the patron carefully pasted these into a scrapbook preserving their condition. All of the tickets were expertly removed from the scrapbook. Some have lined paper remnants, while others are fairly free of paper. Overall, great early baseball collectibles. I do recall seeing a couple of these tickets from early Babe Ruth pitched games, although he was not the winner in either game. I regret not buying these, FWIW... I hope this helps. |
Great information, Scott. Exactly what I was looking for. There is some glue residue on some of them so I guessed they were taken from a scrapbook. Thanks again - Ed

I'm not sure if you did the research to determine what happened in each of the games that your tickets were from? The second ticket from the top is of particular note. On 9/25/09 the A's and Cleveland played a doubleheader. In the 1st game, HOF Eddie Plank was the winning pitcher (shutout). The second game featured a terrific pitchers duel between HOF Addie Joss and HOF Chief Bender. Bender and the A's prevailed, shutting out CLE 3-0. Neat ticket! |

In the other games: 5/2/1908, the A's scored two runs on Boston errors in the 3rd, Dygert with the win, Winters, the loss. 8/20/10 Chief Bender beats Irv Young 5/30/11 Harry Krause shuts out Lew Brockett and the Highlanders. 9/6/13 Bob Shawkey beats Fred Anderson, Collins and Baker score 3 runs each and Tris Speaker goes 3 for 4. |
Quote:
Looks like you are on it. FYI, when you posted the photo of your tickets, I was curious what happened in each of the games. 3-0 score was a typo. I meant to say 5-0. BTW, originating of the same Philadelphia collection I own a win ticket stub for each of these early HOF pitchers: Addie Joss- 1909 (LP Chief Bender- Game 1) Game 2- Cy Young LP Eddie Plank Christy Mathewson-1910 (Win # 242)- vs. Phillies Rube Marquard- 1912 vs. Phillies Rube Waddell- 1904 vs. Wash I picked these up at different times over the last 20 years... Great stuff! |
Thanks, Charles. The photographer is E R Smith from E Hampton Ma.

I attended the Cubs/ Yankees game Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley. There's a table & showcase set up inside the park with game used stuff, signed memorabilia by Banks, Williams, Jenkins etc... They also sell old line up cards that the are taped up in the dug out. I noticed one set off to the side, it was the Cubs vs Yankees from Yankee Stadium from April 6th, asked the price and bought it. There's only one for each dugout. I asked about the lineup cards from the games played at Wrigley (2), they're going to auction starting at $500 I was told.

1944 Marines Baseball Photo Pearl Harbor Hodges?
2 Attachment(s)
Picked up this photo of the Marine baseball team at Pearl Harbor in 1944. I know Gil Hodges was stationed there in that time frame, and the player in the back row, 2nd from left looks like him. Any thoughts?
|
Great photo, but that's not Gil -- way too short for one thing.
