That's a great looking 1!

How is it only a "1"?
Back damage? |
|
An amazing "1" of Ted. Can't miss adding that card to a collection!
Never saw one of those Aarons before! |
Clean back. Horizontal crease from border to border in middle. I would think it may get a 2 from SGC. The best looking one that I have ever owned.
|

It goes along with his RC, (hence same year) Theres also the 54 Spic N Span card too! |
Gosh, That is a really nice Ted Williams. Nice pickup.
Congrats on the Johnston Cookies Aaron. I can quite figure out what that card and the Spic N Span cards don't get more love. Both are infinitely more difficult than that 54 Topps. Congrats to you, I hope to add that card to my collection some day. |
Those other 54 Aarons are the kind of cards that have tremendous room to grow. All it takes is a proper AH setting, a great write up, a huge solo page picture, and two rich bidders-- then a whole new price bar can be set. That's how cards break out. Good time to get them, in my opinion. Cause once the hobby bell is rung and a card breaks out, can never un-ring it. I feel that way about quite a few cards in the hobby.
That is a very attractive Aaron card. The fence in BG gives it real flavor. His grin is priceless. Awesome piece. |
Thanks. I usually only collect signed cards, but this Aaron card is just too cool. Besides the color, the big grin, etc....I also love the fact that the Johnston Cookies set is numbered based on the players uniform. This card is numbered 5, which Aaron wore for one season prior to switching to the 44 that we all know.
I actually picked up two of these. This will probably make non-autograph collectors cringe, but I plan on getting one of them signed for my HOF RC collection. |
Mantle pickup
2 Attachment(s)
Thanks to a N54 board member I finally got a 52 Mantle. The back is a mess but the card displays well which is what I was looking for.
I also picked up a 51 Wheaties Premium on ebay. |
Great pickups Dan. I like that 51 Premium. I believe I had several bids on that one but obviously lost out on it.
|
Dan,
Love the arrangement. That was a dynamite card from a great board member at a friends & family price. Great addition! Best, Matt |
Everyone catching the train for a 52 mantle?? Heck CW is looking for one in the BST. Is there a flu epidemic?
There was a extremely nice PSA 2 in the LOTG auction. (sold 10,200) It was a beauty! Here the link for those who didnt see it: http://loveofthegameauctions.com/195...2-LOT2170.aspx Nice job on the 51 Wheaties too! It took me a while, but i found a nice one a while back |
I have been discussing this with my brother and cousin. The 52 Topps Mick is seeing quite the run lately. At all the lower grades, it seems ones with eye appeal are breaking into new area pricewise.
|
WOW, Nice Mantle. I love that Wheaties Test Photo in your arrangement. I want to add one of those to my collection as well. Congrats!
|
Great pick up so far guys!
Ricky Y |
Yep, that 52 Mick is a beauty. I too have a serious jones for that card. I just need to get my 51 Bowman pick up paid for then that is up next. Stunning example with a bold image. Congrats, now sell it to me!! LOL.
Seriously though, you guys don't want a 52, that card is so last year...especially with great eye appeal in low grade. **These are not the droids you seek** :D |
Namath
Not baseball but February pick up...Thank to Earl and SGC..SGC received on Monday graded by Friday.

It's not Ted, Hank or Mick, but I just picked up this nice '56 Topps Dodger.
|
Nice Namath Auto'd RC! Dude was walking around the Super Bowl thinking he was a flat out PLAYA in that coat. That was hilarious! Namath is the best! I will never forget him trying to kiss Suzy Kolber on MNF.
Beautiful 56! I could never show the patience to do an entire graded set, but if I could, it would be the 56 set. Killer Set. |
Picked this up last night. I have been keeping an eye on this card for a couple year now. I love the color that this card exhibits with the red back ground and Navy of Mantle's cap. I finally found one without a bunch of print in the red, so I jumped on it.

|
Ian, That's an awesome card! I congratulate you for that awesome pickup!
|
Ian, definitely a late-in-life signature, but I had my eye on that one for a while as well. I shoulda pulled the trigger.
|
And the hits keep comin. Great stuff. Total pop 4 is insane rarity!
Here's a good value, in my opinion. There was both a gorgeous 7 and 6 offered in this PWCC auction. Such centering as these two had is rarely found on a Koufax RC. I was on the fence about which to go for. My late grandfather was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan, and my mother and uncle idolized Koufax. So I always missed the 8 I'd sold last year to fund my Ruth M101. Yet I also always knew that 8 was a condition-valuable card and I could find equal eye appeal one day for less money. Anyways, I debated the 7 vs the 6 hard the last few days. The 7 had much sharper corners, and what really drew me to it was that rarely seen clean yellow background, free of print smudging we see on the 6. But there was a spot on the upper left white border, which is clearly why the 7 was not an 8. I knew my eye would always go to that spot when admiring the card. I also felt there was a mild tilt to the centering along the left side to the 7, so the 6 had the centering edge-- albeit by a fine hair. I decided I would pay, at absolute maximum, $500 more for the 7. I felt any wider spread than that, and the 6 was a much better value-- in terms of eye appeal for the money. I also noted that the 7 had a much more prosaic and salesman-y write up, which I felt might tempt the bumpers out there or those who love a sexy hard sell. Whereas the 6 was accompanied by relatively little fanfare. Lastly, it seemed to me that the 7 was not completely free of print smudge in the yellow; I could detect faint traces, some of which might be more pronounced in reality, as opposed to the scans. Sure enough, the 7 hammered at a whopping $900 more than the 6. So I feel like it's a great value, not being a $900 lesser card by any stretch; I would not have blinked were it in a 6.5 holder at all, as it looks to be in identical condition to another 55 card in 6.5 that I own. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...andy-koufax-rc |

Thanks Matt M & Kyle.
Kyle- I had also been watching the Musial for a while (since it listed) at what I felt was a pretty reasonable BIN. What finally pushed me over the top was a mysterious 10% off coupon that showed up as a small tab in "My eBay"?!? At first I had no idea what it was, thinking it was linked to some sort of credit card sign up or something.. only realizing it was legit the night it was to expire (valid 2 days). Definitely a great closing tool for eBay! Re- your comment about the sig being late in his life, I'd posted this card for sig verification over on the autograph side because it was noticeably different than my other Musials (obtained in person).. and got immediate response saying the same. Regardless very happy to have it.. seems there are far few signed Leafs than BW Bowmans. Separately, I also took in a lower cost '55 Dodger alternative from PWCC tonight. Probably didn't get a huge bargain, but less than it would be if it were in a 5.5 or 6 holder. Nice to get back to the roots with a raw card. |
I thought you were going to take a break from buying for a while after the Paige, Matt?
|
Quote:
Let bet, it's Feb 6th, I say he posts a T206 Wagner by Feb 19th! I mean really brother, what else is left? Hahaha. |
LOL, its almost amusing the quality of cards that are showing up nearly daily on this thread anymore. I am loving it. Card Porn!
Two great looking 55's in the Koufax and that Jackie Robinson. Both are on my want list. |
Quote:
Hey MATTYC....i saw that 1937 Opeechee Dimmagio..i looked at it, but passed as i didnt know anything about it..i had to stick what i know only before spending my wad. I thought it was a very old and cool piece, but i seen so many things being faked, thought it might been one. Glad you got it bro, i couldnt see myself paying over 2k for something i knew very little on. As for the top few bidders, it looked legit at least..only 1 person that looked suspicious of shilling that placed bids from 800-1200 with a lot of retractions. You guys might be seeing some pre-war stuff, since i have about hit everything i wanted post-war, other than some tuff rare Mantle items and that Mays RC, someday i might get a Maris,Koufax or a Robinson, just not now. Look for me to hit my most sought after cards Ruth and Cobb. I tried on a Joe Jackson, but missed it by a mile on PWCC. After getting the Henry Yee photo of Babe Ruth RC pic of pitching for RedSox in a Type 3..I really like the pic. Its about as close i ever come to the real deal. I missed out on that 63 plaque/mask mantle last year, if i had to re-do it again..i wouldnt have my such nice 52RC of Mantle..some days are meant to be. BTW...TODAY ONLY!!!! Ebay sent me a message: QUADRUPLE BUCKS!!! ONLY ON Feb 6th (TODAY!!!) Quad on 150+, Triple for 100+, Double for 50+ |
|
Dont you hate it, when the TPG's place the cards crooked in the holder.
You take our $$$, how about satisfy the customer or get better holders |
I agree Chris. It's def annoying. I've seen some holders do real damage to cards due to human error at the TPGs. My new Sutter isn't the worst I've seen, but it could be better for sure.

'59BZ Kenny Boyer
|
Beautiful Bazooka. Love the 59s. Awesome pickup. Congrats.
|
Ian-that Jackie is gorgeous! Damn, you're making me want to pick one up. Oh how the hell am I going to work on my T206 set with you guys showing off these beauties? http://williamgregory.net/images/laughing.gif And an autographed Leaf Musial. Wow!
Kirk-that's one of my favorite football cards. I've got Joe Willie's HBO special perma-saved on my DVR. I can't believe you've got one of his rookie cards autographed. I wonder if he was rocking a fur coat when he did it? :p Matt-truth be told, that's one of my favorite cards of the Mick. Love the color. Bob-that's a beauty. Anytime you can pick up a '56 Topps in that condition (and a Brooklyn Dodger to boot), you're doing well. Congrats! Matt-I'm going to be buying cards again here soon. Leave a few for me, ok? BTW, that Koufax is much nicer than a 6 imo. Great eye appeal. Jeff-love the Boyer. A very underrated player in his time. Really enjoying your cards, guys. And I love seeing this forum pick up. Before long, we're going to give the pre-war a run for its money! |
Auto Cards
Thanks Bill...Maybe you will like these pictures....Mike Navarro got me hooked on signed cards....notice the 69 signed white letter?

Great stuff Kirk. I do not collect autographs and am not familiar with how they impact the value of cards. Given two card in top condition, does the autograph increase or decrease the value of the card. I assume the market for autographed cards is different and likely smaller than that for card only collectors, but really have no idea

Kirk...wow, awesome stuff.
Lovin' the 69 Bench. One of my favorite cards of my youth, and a card I still love today. Look how young he looks! Classic card... |
Oh damn, Kirk, those are nice!
Hank is one of my few remaining idols with Stan the Man and Ralph Kiner gone. The '54 Topps of his is just an iconic card, and I will have one soon. |

My killebrew rookie. Just bought. Debating on having it graded. Not a big fan of graded cards but thought this was a nice one
|
I just got this gem in on Friday and I will be sending off to SGC.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=14179 |
Ah, so you were the one who landed that Paige! Good one. I had put in three offers, but all were auto rejected.
|
I was going to get the Leaf Paige that was listed yesterday but that one got bought quick! I am not sure if the one you bought was on eBay from 707 but I was going to get that one also but I waited too long. That is one card you do not wait on....now that I figured that out.
|
Love the Paige!
Picked this one up this weekend. A little OC, but I don't mind. http://www.autographaddict.com/pics/bobby_cox69t.jpg |

That Killebrew is gorgeous, I'm on the lookout for one myself..
Here's my pick-up for the month |
Quote:
Ah, just saw it was an SGC 10 on completed listings. Considering the toughness of just finding the card, in many ways any Leaf Paige is a great Leaf Paige. Yes, I grabbed the 707 one. Never saw centering and focus on the same Paige in anything that wouldn't crush my bank account lol. |

It took a month and half of negotiating but I got this awesome print offset Carlton Fisk rookie. I am not a Fisk fan just like the print errors. Aslo got the regular and black spot 71 Jim Nash.

Sweet Mick 61. I came THIS close to bidding on that one as the centering was so nice. Alas I had to put everything I had into winning another card. Great pickup.
|
Fantastic Mantle, Dave! Cool cards posted by all! (Nice Carlton RC, Todd, and that's a killer Killebrew, CD!)
Nice grab on the Koufax, Matt -- such a classic card! One of my favorite cards from the 50s, regardless of player. I took a stab at the PSA 7 you mentioned, but I think I was 3rd or 4th underbidder, as my snipe fell a few hundo short. Typical strong PWCC price on that one. Here's a new arrival. The original PWCC scan for this card was a bit jacked up, but the card did not disappoint once I had it in hand. Really impressed with the color, print, and registration on this one. Here's a more accurate scan, followed up with a comparison to my off-registered color variation of the same card. http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...20williams.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...n/2%20teds.jpg |
1958 National Sports Council Mantle
I absolutely love oddball Mantle cards and this is by far the oddest thing I have ever seen. It was described to me as a 1958 issue by National Sports Council. It is 11X14 and is printed on card stock. The bizarre part is the back. Mantle discusses at length the benefits of living in America rather than communist Russia, and it contains pictures of Stalin and other dictators.
Many thanks to Chris (pawpaw) for letting me know this even exists and for sending me a link to it. I owe you! http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMz...S4Hh9/$_57.JPG |
Bestdj777...i had no idea, so i had to let you in on it...I am sending you another link with some other oddball items you might like. Found it while searching for info on this one.
Seems like your area for fun and enjoyment. |
Great cards all!! Easing back in to Hof collecting with these...

My latest pickup. Love the centering, coloring, and registration. If not for a single print line on the left side of the card, I am sure this would have graded higher....

Oh...picked this up too, from my Bill Goodwin. REALLY nice centering on a card that is sooooo tough to find centered. That sealed it for me. Going in the 'keeper' collection.

That Mantle AS and Gibson are EXACTLY MY TYPES OF CARDS! What phenomenal centering and eye appeal. That Gibson has gotta be 50/50 or very damn close. It looks so much better than higher graded examples. If I saw that card I'd have been all over it. Fantastic catch.

I snagged a PSA 6 Gibson today for my '59 upgrade - I would have preferred the 5.5 listed earlier.

Guys,
We're slowing down here. Somebody drop some science on this thread! |
Uhhh...I picked this one up. It is off getting graded as we speak. I hope it grades high!

Oddball Mantles
I was pleased to add both of these to my collection today. Unfortunately, I do not know what either of them are. I saw the first one listed by a reputable seller as a unknown premium photo. I am assuming its from the 60s, but I don't know who issued it or how. I don't know a thing about the second one and have never seen it before. It was very reasonably priced, so I figured it was worth a gamble. Any insight anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
