Happy New Year - January, 2014 Pick Up's
1 Attachment(s)
I know that I am jumping the gun a bit here but it is New Year's Day already in many countries around the world!
Very excited to pick this one up on the bay despite a furious rush of offers and negotiations within a couple of hours of being listed, 1946 Newark Eagles original photo w/4 HOF'ers: Irvin, Doby, Day & Mackey along with several other Negro League stars. Originated from Monte Irvin's personal collection.......... |
Great photo Phil !

happy new year pick ups
My wife had a 1920 world series photo-- of jamieson stealing second in the
final game-- framed for my office walls. I now have framed-- on the walls--one world series scene for each year from 30-49; 15 and 17; 20 and 28. For the years without a scene, I have representative photos for each year of interesting players often chosen so as to represent the various presses and photographers of the eras as well. The many office walls now show 1910-1949, all type one. Looking forward to finishing up cards to represent a player from each photo . Just a couple or so left. all the best and happy new year everyone. barry |

I picked up a stellar Jackie Robinson letter written in 1955(year of ws win no less). It was to a Mil. sportswriter regarding a "rhubarb" Jackie had with the Mil. media and ultimately his fist fight with bad arse Eddie Mathews the year prior. I have wanted a special autographed piece of Jackie for some time now and this one fit the bill. I love letters.. the baseball content got me(Jackie backed away from nothing). The envelope was also signed. I am very pleased to add to my 42 collection(Attached a couple photos so you all feel his presence-haha).

Vander Meer oddball?
2 Attachment(s)
Maybe I'm losing my mind? :D
Probably... I couldn't resist picking up these original circa 1938 sterling silver cufflinks and tie pin that feature a calendar with June 11th marked. June 11th, 1938 is the date that Johnny Vander Meer threw his first of two consecutive no-hitters. Honestly, I have no way to directly link these personally to Vander Meer (yet), but what a strange coincidence. These literally landed in my lap and I felt that they should end up in my advanced Vandy collection since the price was right and I think they are cool. Happy New Year to everyone on net54! |
Quote:
Those are nice... Hopefully they can be linked to Vandy!!! |

If those are Vander Meer's they certainly found the right home. These four items likely would only appeal to me but they are my first pickups of the new year. I cannot believe there are many 1971 Pirates Spring Training programs out there. The scorecard is from game #7. The 1971 game 2 NLCS stub has long been on my want list. This is the first opportunity I have had to add one to my 1971 Buc collection. Bob Robertson hit three homers this game while Willie Mays hit his only career post season homer. For some reason all San Francisco items from this series have been hard to come by. The Pittsburgh ones seem to be much more obtainable. Does anyone have any ideas why this disparity exists?

Stanford Pottery Banks
I'm extremely excited to have picked up my second Detroit Tigers Stanford pottery bank in a month. This will look nice next to the mascot head I purchased. Both were ebay purchases and I love them!!!:D I'm new to the Stanford pottery world, but these seem to be scarce.

1920s Joe Sewell Game Worn Cleats
The most recent addition to the Hall of Fame case in my office is this pair of 1920s cleats worn by Joe Sewell (1977 HOF inductee).
Along with the cleats I also received a letter from Joe Sewell written to the previous owner as well as a gold HOF plaque postcard and the original box addressed by Mr. Sewell to the previous owner (which is who I bought them from). <img src="http://www.hofbats.com/images/sewell/JSewellLotSmall.jpg"> <img src="http://www.hofbats.com/images/sewell/JSewellTopSmall.jpg"> <img src="http://www.hofbats.com/images/sewell/JSewellAddressSmall.jpg"> <img src="http://www.hofbats.com/images/sewell/JSewellLetterSmall.jpg"> Joe Sewell was the most difficult man in major league history to strike out. In 7,132 at-bats he struck out only 114 times. He also holds the record for consecutive games without a strikeout, at 115. http://baseballhall.org/hof/sewell-joe |
Coliseum seats
2 Attachment(s)
Didn't see that there was already a thread started, so I deleted my old post...
Picked up this pair of New Haven Coliseum Interlocking floor seats at my local flea market today (Yes, the redwood flea market is open despite the near zero temps...) Thought that they were pretty cool given the former Coliseum's history (Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, The Allman Brothers, and one of my personal favorites ZZ Top)... They didn't last long... I showed them to a good friend who just bought his first home, he made me an offer (which I refused) and gave them to him as a housewarming gift... No longer mine, but I thought I would share... |

Not very vintage.. But was able to pick up this medal given to former Negro League pitcher Robert Scott from the John Henry "Pop" Lloyd Foundation. Was given to Scott in the early 2000s when they were honoring Negro League players.

Not vintage but...
I'm really excited about my latest pickup. As some may know, I collect stuff related to former top prospect Josh Phelps (Blue Jays, Indians, Rays, Yankees, Cardinals, Giants). As you can imagine, the market for his stuff isn't terribly deep and, frankly, I own most of the good stuff already. So a couple weeks ago, I saw that Celebzdirect was offering Lineup Cards from 2002 as part of thier Sam Perlozzo collection (items he was selling). Seeing as they had a bunch of lineup cards, I figured I'd see if they had any Blue Jay ones from when Josh was on the team. Turns out they had several...and I purchased two. The first, from September 16th of 2002, was from a game in which Josh hit his 15th - and final - home run of his rookie season and accounted for both of the Blue Jays runs in a 2-0 victory over Baltimore. He came in 6th in the ROY voting for 2002 while his teammate, Eric Hinske, won the award.
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ue-jays-vs.-os It is already signed by Mike Bordick who had some kind of errorless streak going at the time. The 2nd was from the following days game when Josh had another productive day at the plate...I'm sending this one to Josh for his collection as a belated Christmas gift. He and his family are good people and they've treated my family very well over that past several years. Most of my other collecting interests are purely vintage but I still get a charge when I find something cool for this player collection... |

A big thank you to Dave T. for these beauties!
These are season passes to St. Paul Saints games for the 1922, 1923, and 1924 seasons (they won the Junior World Series in '24). It also looks like these belonged to Lute Boone's wife. He was the Saints shortstop for 7 seasons. He also played for the Yankees from 1913-1916. |
Ben, just noticed your Jackie Robinson letter - that is spectacular.

This one arrived in the mail today. I picked it up on eBay from one of the sellers linked to the John Rogers archives. I was surprised to see that a few of the photos, including this one, had been slabbed by PSA. I wonder if they are testing the waters and will do this more often. I can't imagine that they would as it would seem to be cost prohibitive in large volumes. The PSA encapsulation certainly didn't result in a price increase in the photo I purchased.

Picked up this great Bain photo of "Death Valley" Jim Scott. The stamp on the back is dated April 16, 1914. I'm pretty sure this photo was taken 2 days earlier on April 14, 1914 when Scott opened the Chicago White Sox's 1914 season by beating Willie Mitchell and the Cleveland Indians.

That's really a dandy photo of Death Valley Jim! You probably knew that he took a no-hitter into the 10th inning before surrendering a hit? Scott ended up actually losing to the Washington Senators 1-0 on May 14, 1914. Here is Scott's super elusive sig that I finally found in 2012. |
Very cool! I always loved Jim because of his Cracker Jack card. You know the White Sox really stunk when a guy goes 20 - 21 with a 1.90 ERA.
Nice sig! |

Mickey Mantle Day blue pennant
Not the vintage of most other pickups shown here, but I thought it was worthy of a post because I had never seen this different design, blue one before.
I've had the fairly common red June 8, 1969 Mickey Mantle Day pennant for quite some time, but I didn't even know this version existed. Even so, when I saw it for sale, I didn't snap it up. But then I couldn't stop thinking about it. Fortunately, it was still available when I checked on it again. Unfortunately, the seller wouldn't budge on the price...probably because I kept saying that I've been a collector for so long and never saw this before! I finally pulled the trigger and I'm glad I did. http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse409238d.jpg |

I too grabbed a few line ups from this offering. A special one for me is from a game not played - resulting in a dated but blank line up card. My friend and I had an early Sept. 2001 road trip planned to watch our Jays play the Orioles in Bmore, and then the tragic events of Sept 11 changed the lives of all of us. This game ready but unused card will have a prominent place in my collection as act as a reminder of all that was lost that day. http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/...psipxznzql.jpg |

1969 Pittsburgh Sports Hall of Fame
Found this out of print book. Was published by a local Pittsburgh printer who also happens to be the illustrator of the book.
A few short years, Pittsburgh would be Chanpions in baseball (1972) and football (1974-76). The baseballc section is outstanding from Honus Wagner to Roberto Clemente. As you can see, some great Negro Leagues are covered along with golf (Palmer), hockey (Hornets) and boxing. http://img252.imagevenue.com/loc158/..._122_158lo.jpg http://img157.imagevenue.com/loc74/t...l_122_74lo.jpg http://img218.imagevenue.com/loc765/..._122_765lo.jpg http://img12.imagevenue.com/loc24/th...l_122_24lo.jpg http://img191.imagevenue.com/loc120/..._122_120lo.jpg |

Harvey Haddix 1959 near perfect game original photo
3 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this great action photo of Harvey "The Kitten" Haddix's near perfect game.
Arguably the greatest game ever pitched, Haddix pitched 12 games of perfection before allowing the 1st hit in the 13th inning in Milwaukee, eventually losing the game to the hometown Braves. |

Earlier this week I finally completed my quest to obtain press passes for all of the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates post season games. I spent five years searching for examples I wanted in my 1971 Pirates collection. My goal was to pick up one example from Three Rivers and Candlestick for the NLCS as well as press passes to Memorial Stadium and Three Rivers for the 1971 fall classic. The green pass is fun because Game #2 of the series played in Baltimore was postponed by rain. I believe the water stains are from rain drops.
I also have ticket stubs to all of the 1971 post season games as well, with the exception of Game #1 of the NLCS played in San Francisco. If you have one and are willing to move it please let me know. |

This one came in today. I have been taking a break from news photos lately but had to have this one. I hadn’t ever seen this 1922 image of Babe Ruth and his daughter prior to picking this one up on eBay. I have three beautiful daughters of my own and perhaps that is what drew me to this picture. Nonetheless I thought it was a very pretty picture and the $40 BIN price tag made it irresistible for me.

1897 J.F. Hillerich & Son Zebra Striped Bat
I actually picked this up a few months back but just received the "official" word today from Hunt Auctions. Hunt handles all appraisals for the Louisville Slugger Museum and I was referred to them by museum staff.
Period stamping gave me a date range from 1897-1911 however, when comparing it to my 1911-16 model bat, I felt pretty confident that it was one of the first bats produced by Hillerich and was steering more towards 1897. After analyzing, they too agreed and further provided the Zebra Stripe info as I was not familiar with it myself. Pretty cool piece of history :) http://photos.imageevent.com/royalro.../large/LS7.jpg |
A beauty Jeff!
