Show your Tobacco, Candy, Gum, Bread, etc. advertisement pieces
Circa 1910-1915
It was taboo to depict American women smoking in the early part of the 20th Century. So, ATC produced this subliminal advertisement showing a gal of middle-Eastern appearance and dress with a pack of cigarettes. Furthermore, the effect of the repeated (diminishing) image was a clever advertising feature which was novel in that era. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...DgalAdv75x.jpg TED Z . |

DISCLAIMER: NOT MINE (although I wish it was)!
Probably the ultimate in advertising: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ertisement.jpg |
While a neat item I don’t believe those Turkish Trophies items were ever issued with baseball subjects and are later fantasy creations made by dealers or collectors put on non-sports displays. I have never seen one with baseball players that looks right.
In the above example you can clearly see where another leather was removed and a different shaped leather was put in its place, also the T3 replaced Hamilton King girl cabinets and most likely the S81 was added to replace a flag silk. I’ve had a few long discussions with long time hobby dealers and all have agreed or said the same thing…that these are most likely not original period as issued items. Cheers, John |

Jon, Here is mine that I bought from a fellow collector.
http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...e/turkish1.jpg I really think these baseball ones were either found empty due to time and damage and baseball issues were added in the thought that they may have been issued like that. Or they were found and the Non-Sports items were removed and baseball added in an order to make the item more valuable. Another interesting note is on all of these that I have seen the cabinet card items (T7-6’s) are not production T7’s they are a thin piece of the T7 art placed on a thicker piece of paper sort a mock version of the later production T7’s. http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn.../turkish13.jpg My guess and this is purely an educated guess is that when these store display pieces were created they had not begun production of the T7-6’s (Bathing & Athletic Girls). All that I have seen that seem to be period feature T7-6 images. These if you follow the redemption coupons were issued around 1913 well after T3’s. So think these store displays were towards the tail end after T3’s etc. I really think that all you are buying when it comes to these baseball versions are fantasy pieces and one should value them as a destroyed non-sport piece with glued S81, T3 and L1’s attached so the total value should be that nothing more. I also think Legendary did a really crappy job of calling this item out as vintage last I checked they weren’t using clear plastic corner mounts in the 1900’s at the very least they didn’t even mention that. Cheers, John |
|
david...that's a cool photo.
question? does a period photo exist depicting a t206...or other t,d,e,n,m card right after it was pulled from it's original package? |
Good question Peter. I have seen a photo that sold on eBay quite sometime ago. It was of a Bar that sold smokes and there was a person in the picture sweeping up and there were a pile of t-cards baseball etc. in front of the broom. Simply put folks tossed the cards on the floor. Sadly I didn't save an image I think Dan McKee has an image....

That's a great way BTW to get someone into collecting if he's into Pirates embrace it with cards, FYI there are also some very reasonable UK tobacco sets that have pirates too. Cheers, John P.S. Just make sure it won't turn to Pittsburgh Pirates there's one card that can be kind of $$$$. :) |
Agreed, that Virginia Brights Pirates piece is amazing John. To keep the Virginia Brights theme going these two large advertising pieces (8"x13") were more than likely displayed in a general store to market Allen & Ginter Richmond Cigarettes. A couple wonderful cigarette making gals!! (CJ in pic used only to give you an idea of actual size)

I'll check out the UK pirate tobacco cards. I've also picked up a Pirates brand back with a Chinese warrior on the front for him. That's about the closest I'll come to owning a T215:D!! And I've floated the idea of a Honus "Pirate" as a nice "cross collecting" piece for him. Quickly received the Heisman from my wife on that one!! :D |
Ahh yes T215s not a cheap one either. :)

When purchased originally I thought this was a Piedmont counter display used for single cigarette sales, but after looking at it closer I believe it to be a counter ashtray.

Some beautiful stuff!
I don't have much, my wife is very anti-tobacco with good reason so I can't really buy big ad pieces even if I could afford them. Tradecards and miscellaneous ads are ok though. I just can't display them. I haven't gone through the old magazines as much as I'd like. Some really great advertising stuff in this thread; and, especially some beautiful El Principe de Gales adv. I'll follow these with 10 of my EPDG T206's. Once George became king on May 6, 1910 the pun and imagery lost a bit. Especially since the title is not hereditary and the eventual Edward VIII didn't become prince of Wales until 23 June 1911. He also wasn't as popular as George, and much thinner. So holding over a brand based on a pun that no longer made any sense also made little sense. Just a theory of course. Steve B |
Quote:
El Principe de Gales was the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII. He was granted the title in 1841 as heir apparent to Queen Victoria, and did not become King until 1901. He was known internationally as the Playboy Prince, and the perfect representative for a cigar brand since he was also known to be a heavy smoker. The brand name El Principe de Gales had been in use since the 1850's, pre-dating the future King George V who did not become Prince of Wales until 1901. Upon King Edward's death in 1910, King George assumed the throne, and the brand name most likely lost its meaning as you theorized. |
