October pick-ups
I'll get things started off on the Post-War forum w/ this "holy grail"!!!

Wow Derek, very nice image minor league issue? What is it?
|
1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue
Sorry, I guess I should've been more clear!
It's a 1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue card of the legendary Bob Gibson. I had been searching for one for about 11 years now and couldn't be happier with the one I picked up. I was surprised at the relatively small size and thickness of the card stock, as I had imagined that it would be more "photo-like" in size and thickness. I was wrong on both fronts!! The seller later e-mailed me the following: "this very card was on display earlier this summer when Bob Gibson's statue at Omaha's Werner Park was presented. Bob commented that he only remembered seeing one other and that was many years ago!" |
Excellent Gibson. I didn't even know that existed :)
|
Incredible card, Derek. Congrats!
|
As a Cardinal fan and collector...... very nice

Gibson
Great card Derek. Had not seen one. How many were in that set . Anyone else of note ?

You can find a common for about $20 on eBay every once in a while. I haven't checked recently...except to snag Mr. Gibson (for about the price of 50 commons). :D |
Great piece! I love those regionals and team issues.
A few items I picked up: 1950 Philadelphia Bulletin Ashburn: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20Ashburn.jpg 1951 Hage's Del Baker-Jim Reese: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...aker-Reese.jpg 1970 Atlanta Braves schedule w/great Hank Aaron graphics: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20schedule.jpg |

This doesn't even compared to the other October pickups so far, but I will post anyway as it has taken a long time to find this one.

Jackson RC was picked up in a large lot of 66s and has been eluding me forever as I'm trying to complete my 66 set.
Koufax RC was picked up from a fellow board member as I start to entertain the idea of going after the 55 set. Real happy with both! |
Congrats Rob, both great pick ups. Hard to believe how much the value of that Jackson RC continues to soar on Ebay!

I've been doing a lot of bottom trolling, picking up beater lots cheap. Here are a few all time Cardinals I found in some of them. The 74 Topps was picked up also. It has Brock on the back and Alex Johnson on the front.

Dan P
Dan - nice pick-ups... Your "oddball" / non-standard HoF rookie collection must be coming along nicely...

Here are a few of my latest pick-ups..........

Damn Phil! You were the one who got the Ripken!! Great pick-up!!! I'm so mad I didn't just do the BIN price...I tried a best offer but knew it would sell for full price.
Great for you that you were able to sell yours for 3.5x just a few months ago!! Very glaf to see it went to you though vs. someone else. |
Thanks, Derek. I thought about making an offer but figured that someone would jump on it while I waited for an answer. Now if I can only afford an orange one...........

I'm moving along slowly, trying to find oddball RC's along with well-centered RC's of post-war players. I don't have my website updated yet. I'm way to busy right now working and helping my two kids with their new houses. Dan |

Chris, nice adds....remember cards come 1st, then its the dog/kids and then the wife.
You will find another 55 armour coin later....the black one on Ebay, i pointed out was 'rare', but spending like 1800 is a huge chunk. I bidded on a 54 Aaron RC that ended last night...of course shill bidded happen and i gave up ( Probstein auction) whoudda thought that? Someone that has not bidded in 30 days, place 1 bid. Crazy http://www.ebay.com/itm/1954-Topps-1...p2047675.l2557 Shill Bidder: Bidder Information Bidder: p***l ( 4168Feedback score is 1000 to 4,999) Feedback: 99% Positive Item description: 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron Rookie RC HOF Braves SGC 60 EX 5 " HIGH END " Bids on this item: 1 30-Day Summary Total bids: 108 Items bid on: 81 Bid activity (%) with this seller: 70% Help Bid retractions: 4 Bid retractions (6 months): 51 |
Holy Toledo, pawpawdiv9!!! How blatant on the shill bidding. 51 retractions in 6-months? 70% activity with the seller? Just horrible.
There are some sellers I don't even bother with because of the obvious shill bidding. Too bad because there are some nice items that I would have gotten into from time to time. |
There's always someone out there looking to corrupt a process, especially if they can make a little more money.

Now and After
She is your fiance now Chris. After you are married you get to take care of the dog and handle complaints about cards :)

I should add that I am very fortunate that she supports my collecting, although I am not entirely sure she understands it or can appreciate why money is better spent on cards rather than jewelry. |

These two are a HUGE pick up for me. They may not be world beaters, but they represent the last two cards I needed to complete the 1957 set!
With that set complete I now only need to finish the 1958 set (38 cards) before I have every base set back to 1954. http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psa26be327.jpg |

My two latest pick-ups.............
|
Phil, that Brock looks undergraded. Nice pick up.
|
Thanks, Brent, agreed. Most 6's & 7's are not nearly as well centered as this one.
|
Wow Gary, I can't imagine how that got a 4! is there something unseen in the scan? Great pickup.

Thanks Dan! I'm hoping the 5 crosses over to a 6 or 7 at PSA. Back is a little off-centered, but everything else looks great on the 5. I'll know for certain once I get the cards in hand.
I've had great luck crossing SGC Bond Breads to PSA (SGC40 to PSA 5, SGC50 to PSA 5, SGC80 to PSA 7)... I'm hoping the luck continues! |

http://faststone-viewer.joydownload....FdKf4AodwHcAHw I use it all the time when I don't want to wait for Photoshop to load. Resizing is under the Edit menu. It does a lot more too. Check it out. |
Sweet Jackies. I think they look WAY better in the handsome SGC holders. If not for resale to Registry types I think that black framing really makes cards pop.
|
1960 OPC Tattoo Mantle Auto Ball
I had this on my list for years. With only one ever graded by PSA, I finally gave up on finding one and removed this from the list. Pleasantly surprised to see this one pop up for sale. Now, I will just have to practice self-restraint and not eat the gum.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psae863e17.jpg |
Ya, I definitely need to hang out here more often. I'm enjoying collecting pre-war, but the vintage cards were my first love as a child, and I'm going to have to find some balance between pre-war, vintage and modern.
Great additions, everybody!!! Dan, that's one of my favorite Clementes. Ok, who am I kidding? I love em all. But the 50s cards are just a cut above. The '58 Topps might be my favorite card from all the post WW II issues. |
1960 Tattoos
Quote:
I have a set of these and some " unopened" packs. When collecting them I was always amused by sellers who offered unopened packs with possibility of a Mantle because it was easy to know who was in the pack by sliding the wrapped gum out. Also, what was it Tattoos in 1960 but Tatoos in 1964 . :-) |
I have always found that amusing as well. There is no way most sellers would take a risk of letting a Mantle go like that when they could easily look inside. So, I would never take a chance. Fortunately, this guy guaranteed it was the Mantle autoball and showed clear pictures of the printed in Canada lines on the wrapper to confirm it was OPC.
How do you store your unopened packs? Now I will have to search for a Topps Venezuela Tattoo of Mantle, although I am sure that is not something I will ever come across. |
Munson placeholder...
I've always wanted to own this Munson...got this one for a song and it will do quite nice until I can upgrade to a near mint example.
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...thurman-munson Happy with the centering, and even the corners, to an extent. The scuffing on the bottom border must be from the scanner or the slab becuase it doesn't look that bad with the card in hand. |
Matt,
Always liked that card as one of the original great actions shots. Nice pick up. Drew |
Great Jackie's Shaun, How is fatherhood treating you?
I can't say I have ever seen that pack. Congrats on the pickup. Are you having it graded or leaving it as is? Nice Munson, I think everyone loves the pose on that card. |
