August pick up thread
1 Attachment(s)
With the National underway, this thread may take a few days to become active.
I'm sure it will fill up with all sorts of goodies soon though. This just arrived in the mail a day or so ago. It's not baseball related per se, but there is a slight nexus to our hobby. The previous owner was kind enough to depart with one of his copies. |

Patrick, you should post that Phelps in the T206 Virtual Set thread. It should be time for Phelps in a couple days. :)

So my want list was pretty focused this year going to the National and we were trying to do the whole thing in only Wednesday so I moved pretty fast and wish I had some time to talk to some people but just didn't. I found very little in the way of CJ's and have needed the final 2 for a few months now. In the back as I was almost done I found the Wags but decided to walk away from it. The dealer was nice, I just didn't have my mind wrapped around spending that much money, but I wanted the Wanger. We came home, I had non-buyers remorse and worked out a deal over the phone and with another buddy at the show to arrange this. I thank Glenn Mechanick, the seller and fellow board member for being flexible and making this work...so now I am down to one! Its been killing me waiting all day for my friends to get back with card.

Steve, good to see you grab one of your whales!
What a gorgeous card! Its fun to share the excitement with a hobby bud. I think I will go look at some of my cards tonight:p |
Congratulations, Steven! That Wagner is incredible!
Really nice pickups, everybody. August is off to a great start, and after everybody is home from the National, I expect we'll be seeing even more great pick ups. |
There's still a lot of unknowns around these "proofs", but I'm totally jazzed to be able to add this to my collection all the same. Thanks Jay!

My first big pickup at the national..
As far as I am aware.. this is the 1st Sweet Cap 150 Yellow Brown..... the Yellow Brown Scraps are almost always found with SC 350-460 fact 30... I was really interested in the card when I saw the SC 150 back.. http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps5096bdd1.jpg http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps4449824c.jpg |

Thanks to a fellow Net54 member I was able to add Cy and a very tough League Park bleachers postcard view to my collection. Also came across a Case Auto Joe Tinker card that is a variation from the one I already have and a Walter Johnson Sporting News Postcard. A good month so far.

Jim
Great postcards....
Wonder where Case cars went with their "famous" engine... Did Ford absorb them or just put them out of business.... |
I'm removing the pictures from my responses so I don't hog up the page...

Nope these are all eBay finds I'll try not to make you too jealous but I picked up the W572 for under $300, I was quite happy with that.

That card of Mays is pretty cool...I'm guessing the black band is for his bean ball that killed Ray Chapman. Must have been hard for him to take the hill with that on his sleeve...

Great cards, all
The e105 Wagner is amazing. That has to be the best conditioned one there is, or close to it. Here is an n172 from tonight. The n172 bidders are crazy. I can't believe I actually was high bidder on one...

Thanks, Matt. I was going for Stovey and Mullane, and I underbid. I was surprised to win this John Ewing. The Louisville people must be on planes, flying back from the National.

As for Gibson, I was actively looking for something to focus my collection on many years ago and read his chapter in 'Glory of Their Times'. He's Canadian and played many years with the Pirates teams of Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke fame, before moving on to coaching/managing in the 20's and 30's. Seeing one of his Pirates' uniforms at the Canadian Baseball HoF brought him to life for me. Actually, just mentioning that makes me want to head back there to see it again. When my "hobby time" is not being spent scouring the usual places for cards, I am reading old newspapers and sports publications about Gibson. I find his baseball life to be very interesting. With respect to collecting, I've identified over 100 issues (w/ variations) including cards, postcards, stamps, chips, discs across a number of sets touching on mostly pre-1920 issues, but also into the 20s and 30s. I've been building this list for years. Just last week alone, a board member (hi Doug!) helped me confirm his inclusion in another issue that I had previously overlooked. The entire "set" has some issues that are difficult enough that I'll probably never get everything, but just possible enough for me to think I should try ;) Quote:

These were my "night before the National opened" pickups as I battled on eBay with my I-phone on a bench outside the hotel. Getting sniped on Goosetree and Yeager was a killer but I was happy with the 7 I picked up.
