August Pick-ups!
Figured I'd start it off.
Nothing special, just set building stuff. <img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5332/9414063689_8b5b0020a7.jpg" width="371" height="500" alt="70T_Gibson"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5493/9414063925_22fa598cd8.jpg" width="354" height="500" alt="57T_Maranda"><br> <img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2836/9414064167_c430f79cbe.jpg" width="363" height="500" alt="70T_LL_McNally"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3697/9414064427_d4694268e2.jpg" width="359" height="500" alt="80T_Brett"><br> <img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7294/9416830032_8284af2a9b.jpg" width="358" height="500" alt="75T_Powell"> |

Nice cards. I really like that Gibson card. What would be a good caption for the Powell card ? :)

Nice cards everyone. For some reason I've always disliked that Brett card, I hate that profile picture, would have been so much better if the photographer would have called his name and snapped the photo when George looked over. Anyway, here's a few more for my '61 set. Trying to drown my sorrows at not making the National! Down to 39 to go to complete this bear!

Very nice cards Bill

brob...great 61s...I wish I was needing only 39, I'm a little behind you and only have TWO high numbers...lol. It IS a beast, and I thought the 66s were bad.
Picked up this 65 Yaz...only need ONE more for the 1965 set...a Jim Hunter rookie (526)...fun being down to one. The Yaz is a little OC, but sharp non the less... http://i.ebayimg.com/t/1965-Topps-Ca...ltg~~60_57.JPG |
Thanks Al & John, I knew the High #'s were tough but they are by far the toughest of any set I've built. I'm down to 7 high #'s and can't be done with them soon enough, but I like to work on the tough sets, the chase is half the fun!
BTW - John, that's my fav. Yaz card! |
Nice cards, everybody!
|
John
Yaz looks good. One to go is exciting. What's after that ?
|
brob28...that will be an awesome '61 set with the quality of cards you're buying. Nice pickups.

Feel lucky to have added both of these historical cards/players to my collection as both came by way of 2nd chance type offers.. thanks Brad (Pencil1974) and Mike Denaro.

Nice Ion. Did 2nd chances come due to buyer default or seller extras, or do you know. There have been threads about bogus 2nd offers on Pre war

Sold my Mantle RC last year, finally picked up another one.
Dan |
Nice pick-ups, Dan. Keen eye for centering on both........
|
Great Mantle RC! Gotta tell ya, centering on that particular card makes so much of its eye appeal, at least to my sense of aesthetics. I'd take that one over many others I've seen with higher grades, because centering is all over the place with that card, especially left to right. Congrats!
|
Finally grabbed one of these. My goal was always (1) nice L/R centering, (2) minimal tilt, and (3) as smooth back edges as can be expected, chipping wise. The backs of these can get so rugged with that black coloring. The back on this one is fantastic, will get a scan up...

Thanks. That was FedEx, and now just checked the mail... The right edge is hiding a little behind the holder's inner lip but centering is money.

Just picked this up for my HOF rookie collection. Low grade but it will work for now....

Oddball Mantles
Picked up this B&W Holiday Inn Dexter Press Postcard. I picked up the other two Dexter Press Mantles, and am working on a run of Mantle Holiday Inn Postcards, so it is nice to be able to finish out the Dexter Press trio while adding to the Holiday Inn set. Also grabbed two Mantle stadium issue postcards but having problems posting those.

53 Shea
67--I just picked up a 2nd Shea for my set. There are two versions. In one some blue ink is missing from the sky in the upper right. You can see several of both versions on ebay

Same pose as 1953 Topps in which he's shown in Brooklyn cap. My first Canadian card. Lol!
|
Some really nice cardboard!
Matty, Fantastic Schmidt RC and 2nd year. That's probably one of the best centered 74's I have ever seen.
I love the oddball Dexter Press Mantle, Frank Robinson Kahn's card (why is he so undervalued BTW?), Kiner 3 x 4. Both of these showed up over the 5 days or so. I real pleased with both of these. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ps-aaron-psa-8 http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...kaline-psa-8.5 |
Matt, beautiful Kaline and Aaron!!

Kaline & Aaron

That Aaron is really a standout example; must be so tough for Mr. Kaline to stand next to him, lol!
Thanks re: that 74 Schmidt. As a centering/no tilt guy, that card has driven me nuts. Alas that one's the best I've come across. |
totally a Homerun with the Hank and Kaline.
I been searching for a Hank, think i found one..but not as nice and centered as yours. The centering is a $%^& |
Chris-- I feel you on how centering can be so annoying on Hanks; when I finally saw centering I liked, it was on a very surprising grade...
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-hank-aaron-rc Funny thing was, once in hand, it hit my eye so pleasingly that I wound up saving a bundle from what I'd initially expected to drop. Of course that savings was immediately spent on cards. |
Beautiful Aaron! I have also noticed really good centering lately on a variety of vintage cards in the 4-6 range. These well-centered mid-grade cards represent the best buys in the hobby IMHO.

Of course, if funds were infinite, I'd be begging Miller to sell me that Aaron 8 ;) Or at least his 71 Ryan. Or 56 Mick. The list could go on... By the way, MBM, I'd bet that Aaron could bump to 8.5 pretty easily! |

Great cards...those Aarons (my favorite card of all time) are simply AWESOME. The PSA 8, wow. Impressive. I was thinking of grading mine just to see what I would get, but after seeing that 4, I think I'll keep it raw...
Here are some recent 1955 pickups for my new set...all 4 came from a local shop who got some in. The Mays was cracked from a PSA 4 case...and after looking at that Aaron RC PSA 4, I think I would resubmit that Aaron. Wow. http://i.onfinite.com/4hvmKQhBd.jpg http://i.onfinite.com/DfKnKQhBd.jpg http://i.onfinite.com/NclqKQhBd.jpg The last card I got was this Jackie card...I have already upgraded this for my set but for the price I couldn't pass it up. I have already promised it to my super excited 8 year old, his first "real" Jackie card as he puts it. It was obviously stapled to the wall...but for $40...who wouldn't pass that up?? I would have frankly paid more...lol. http://i.onfinite.com/SbSqKQhBd.jpg Great centering and look at those corners...if only, right?? Still a great card of an American Hero. |

Some great pickups on this month everyone. I just received one more.

Drysdale
Very nice Adam. Great smile there on Don
|
Adam, That's one of the nicest Drysale rookies that I have ever seen. Where did you pick it up at?
|
Quote:

Well said, MBM. Once it is in a permanent collection, the grade and all that becomes irrelevant, compared to the joy we get from the card itself.
Bottom line is that it hits the eye like a mint card and thus makes it a really great pickup! Very crispy. |

Great Yaz, Hoot, Mick-- this Post War thread has got some life this month!
Landed one of my toughest centering targets of all time; had been holding out for a centered Carew at a good price forever. I also learned a lesson I will keep in mind forever; saw the PSA 9 Winfield and took a flyer because the centering, color, and corners were so sweet, and the central image was clean. I saw the stray white PDs in the scan and figured I'd find a way to live with them. Lo and behold, I get it in hand, and those dots are so small and unobtrusive. Amazing how a blown-up scan can magnify and in effect overstate a card's flaws! I gotta keep in mind that in-hand certain aspects will look way different. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...s-rod-carew-rc http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...eve-carlton-rc http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...pps-nolan-ryan http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...reggie-jackson http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...to-clemente-ia http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...thurman-munson http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-dave-winfield |
Great cards Matt! I especially love the Nolan Ryan.
Another pickup for me. Thanks to Chris (pawpaw) for finding this one and bringing it to my attention. Almost done with my team issue/premium photo run. http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...psfd890a7b.jpg |
Dont i get a finders fee? JK. glad to help a fellow member out, wasnt sure what it was, and neither did the seller apparently. Other than it was a team issue, and i knew you had it on your want list.

I guess they come in bunches. A month + off, and suddenly a handful of HOF rookies seemingly fall into my lap. This being the lone post-war one so far. I would've been happy to leave the '55 Golden stamp as my Alston representative, but I'm not one to pass up a nice deal on a pre-rookie minor league issue, especially on a "type" that wasn't represented yet in my collection..
|
Nice pick-up, Dave.

August Pickups
Finished my '58 set (been needing the Mick for over a year), and put big dents into my '55 and '66 sets (all high #'s). Good month for me!

Wow, go away for a week and all hell breaks loose all over the boards, rookie pickups are going nuts, and ML auction last night was insane! I guess the hobby is riding high right now.
I don't know a lot of you here, but I love these oddball rookies everyone is picking up. Matty, great looking cards, strong eye appeal as usual. I love the looks of that Carew RC. Congrats guys! |
