Thanks to a board member - I was able to add this to my collection. While not a Hall of Famer - I felt this was a key one to have for the rookie collection.

Awesome cards guys!
What makes the 54 Kaline PSA 5 grade there? I'm new at collecting and grading but that card looks a lot sharper than a 5. Nice corners and nice centering. That's a beaut! |

Well - not quite as nice as the Mantle above... but I had some eBay bucks to spend, so I figured why not pick up my first ever Mantle.

Charley you must have had some serious eBay bucks
saved up. I had only enough for this 70 OPC Munson http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=11836 |

I didn't have enough to cover the entire card, but I had enough to justify the purchase. |

Love those Mick's
I love the 53 Topps Mick's. Thats a card I really need to add to my collection.
Picked this up on the 4th of July! http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...emente-psa-7.5 |
Picked this up a day later... A friend was selling and I just couldn't turn the deal down he gave me on this card relative to the last couple sales.
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...clemente-psa-9 |
Is it just me or are ALL Clemente cards gorgeous?
I mean, even the 66 Mantle leaves something to be desired...but EVERY Clemente card is beautiful! |
WOW, Matt, great Clemente RC!
|
nice Clemente...in the next few weeks, i may be adding one to my collection.
Just waiting and see how my bid holds out or not. Then i'll post it here, so ya can drool more. BTW- amazing Mantles..too bad i have nothing to post -pic wise. :(:( I missed an opportunity for a 51 Bowman mays...someone jumped in and paid full price, while i was negotiating a deal. too bad, the seller was off during the holidays. |

Wow, guys, July is shaping up to be a hell of a month! So many beautiful cards!
Quote:
Matt, those two Clementes are gorgeous. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the '55. David, that's a beautiful Kaline rookie. It looks like it should have received a slightly higher grade imo. Charley, love the Jackies. Mr. Robinson will be an early pickup for me once I get started, just need to decide where to start. :D John, I love those new cards of yours. The '65 set is starting to grow on me. And that's one of my favorite Willie Mays cards. |
Love that Clemente RC, Matt, just gorgeous!

So the 70 OPC Munson that is on the previous page "got lost in the mail". I posted too soon prior to receiving it and now looked what happened.
Anyways I got a refund on my eBay bucks and got one of the best duo cards in it's place. Still would like to get that OPC Munson though........ http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=11847 |

1950's/60's Molson Postcards

Quote:

Thats a really nice 62 Musial. Might want to think about reviewing that card. Looks alot nicer than a 8.
|
Nice pickups, all -- from the raw '71s to the Musial to the Mantle/Aaron -- fantastic!! I've also never seen a Molson postcard... very cool.
Congrats on the Roberto, Matt. YOWZA! And I agree on the "Clemente having great cards" sentiment. If I was ever to do a player run of cards, Clemente would be the man. Even his obscure regional and test issues are cool looking. |
July pickups
Pleased to add this Holiday Inn Mantle to my collection. Although it is a little off topic, I also picked up a handful of 1910s-1950s Westie tobacco cards.

Grabbed a few HOF'ers for the upgrading of my 1972 set, which I have for trade in the B/S/T section. And the 2 Gibson World Series cards are just for the heck of it.
Attachment 106578 Attachment 106580 |
Picked up an entire SSPC 1975 set, complete with all of the error cards from the set such as the Nolan Ryan error card in NrMt to Mint condition.
It really is a shame that the set had a bunch of legal issues and a bunch of errors on cards, because it truly is a beautiful set of cards. The front of the card has a large picture of the player, and only that. It doesn't have a bunch of stuff like the team name, the players name, the company, or whatever else plastered all over the front, which makes the card look beautiful. The back is where you will find all that stuff. Will have some scans up later. |
Sspc
Yup , they are absolutely and intensely gorgeous , ; I rank them right up there with the '53 Bowman Color as far as sheer eye appeal .

My biggest pick up of the year came this morning at 9:17 AM, not in the form of cardboard, but rather a 6 lb 3 oz baby girl.

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps37ae3c6c.jpg- broke this one out of the psa case. When I went to bid and buy I didn't relize it was a perforated EX 5, the case is in the trash but the card is in the personal collection

Goodwin Auction
suprised the bid even held up..In fact i gave a Clemente guy here a shot at it while it was still 'juicy' Not my particular player and year...was hoping/looking for a RC of him, just couldnt pass this one up as nice it was. http://www.goodwinandco.com/ItemImag...-366a_med.jpeg http://www.goodwinandco.com/ItemImag...-366b_med.jpeg |

Topps 1968 Discs
I satisfied my quest for the 1967 Topps Disc sets with a proof sheet of both from Topps Vault some years back. The 68 set is one of the toughest Topps test sets to cobble together. I have only been able to get 8 so far ( all in proof form), this being the latest

Nothing terribly great, but I knocked a bunch of HOF'ers off of my need list at a show today. Anyone knowing the centering issues of the 1972's should recognize how great it is to find a Hank Aaron in action that isn't 90/10 left to right. And the 1970 Clemente is one of my favorites, so I was thrilled to get it at a decent price.
Attachment 107355 |
Congratulations, Shaun! What a sweetie! No offense, gentlemen, but I think Shaun wins this thread hands down. :D
Here's hoping little Maria Gabriela and mom are both doing well, and resting comfortably. God Bless you and your family!!!! |

There were two main reasons I quit the hobby for so long in the early 90's. First, the over-saturation of the market just killed it for me. It seemed that companies were just printing the cards 24/7. No quality control. No real appeal. Secondly, the cards themselves often looked hideous. Loud colors, horrible typography. It was just too much, and insulting to me as an (at the time) advertising art major. Baseball is beautiful by itself, and doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles, you know? Take some great pictures, and let them speak for themselves. Maybe put the player's name, team and position in small print on the bottom. Nothing else is needed. The other info can go on the back. I thank you guys for introducing me to this set. It's always great to find something new that tickles your fancy. |

Bill,
I started upgrading some of my sets and with a couple of them, like 1970 and 1972, I've just been going full bore trying to complete them in nice shape with well centered cards. Here's a few more of my pickups from today...and you'll notice a nod to you in the top center position... Attachment 107373 The in-action Billy Martin and Killer cards are impossible to find centered, so I'm pretty happy with these guys, even though the Killebrew has a somewhat diamond cut. |

Yes, it is. :)
I moved to the Dallas area right before my senior year of high school (he and his family had just moved there from Tulsa, Oklahoma). We ran into each other on the tennis courts one day before school started, struck up a conversation, and have been close friends ever since. He's truly one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Before I messed up my back, I'd usually fly out to Vegas every year, or every other year, to see him and his family. I tell ya, it's a real trip seeing him on television. He looks pretty much the same as he did in high school (without the long hair, though). I keep asking him if he has a self portrait tucked away like Dorian Gray, lol. |
Goldin Auctions - Branch Rickey Release Form

So apparently the release of player Robert Ramazzotti made room on the club for Jackie Robinson back in 1947. At least that's what the auction said. Anyways I'm pretty excited to have this piece of Dodger history. :D

Release
Neat item Colby. Maybe an old newspaper or baseball history search will turn up additional info you could keep or display with the item
