Lets see some N172 Old Judge ))
Just got back my first really detailed N172 and I just cant take my eyes off it and how awesome it looks (granted had to pay about 3 times the last sale but glad i did), just an amazing set when you think how old it is and yet had over 2500 different pictures in it.
Easy Thread lets see some more, here are my 3 recent picups- all the laying down ones crack me up! http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...York-40-CU.jpg Though the cap was too cool on this one http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...City-10-CU.jpg Wow this one blew me away! http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...burg-50-CU.jpg |
Scott, those OJs are amazing! The Fields was worth the money IMO. Virginia (biggrandma) had some great OJs. Pretty much all of them had impossibly incredible photo quality for a single group of cards. I have no idea how they all developed so well, and stayed that way so long. They were an original collection. I have a couple of them.
I am out of town right now, but I will post some stuff next week. -Matt |

I'm partial to the one that shares my name, despite no family tree relation.

Yah, it's kind of like the Washington Nationals in the land of Oz. I wish I owned it, but it is in the Wharton-Tigar collection at the British Museum.

Jay and Joe G., wondered why this pose is not in the book. You have an N173 in it's place. It can't be scarce because I have one:D
Joe |
Joe---we tried to show each team that the player had a card from in the pose images. The image that you are referring to showed Weidman with a NY Giants card.

Some very nice cards posted. I'll second the comment on the photo quality of the cards from Virginia (biggrandmama). I was fortunate to pick up a couple of them. Hard to improve on the Fields posted by Scott.
One of my favorite players, Charles "Lady" Baldwin. Now if I could only find his 5th pose I'd have a nice sequence of his full pitching motion :) |

Jim, great looking McPhee. I had my eye on that one.

Jamie--are you selling it or auctioning it off? If the latter, good luck with it.

This is a set I wish I paid more attention to as a kid, because as an adult they really are amazing! To think that some collectors have hundreds and or thousands upon thousands of these cards in collections is not only humbling but mind blowing as well. Here are my lone 13 examples. Great cards everyone!
http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...d/huge/oj1.jpg Jim B great cards! |
Which city is featured the most across the set? I know there were different teams, but seems like chicago might have the most...?
Great cards everyone! Rob |

Some amazing cards. Nothing like a dark image photographic card from Goodwin & Co. I love Jim's Gaffney and what a "meager" collection of 13 John.
|
Joe, that card is amazing!
Jamie, you know if Mr. Whitney needs to move one day you know he can bunk at my place anytime. Great stuff guys! Cheers, John |
John,
You will have first crack at it, I promise. But the pooch is hypo-allergenic, so we are co-existing quite well at the moment. Jamie |

In some ways, I'm lucky to be a Detroit collector as opposed to New York. The 1887 total pose count would raise from Detroit's 28 to New York's 111 (NY averages ~8 poses per player in 1887)! |
Jerry,
That Billy Sunday is amazing! JimB Joe, The image on that Twitchell is mind-blowing! |
How about one example from the other Old Judge baseball set?

The best mustache on a card ever, I challenge anyone to beat that stache! Jim here is the little known N167 variation you will need to find for your set. http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...iff%20copy.jpg Very excited to add another OJ, thanks Greg. http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...99956001_f.jpg |
Bought the book...made a purchase (or two)
After buying The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) (I know I am late to the party, but it really is a wonderful resource, guys. Thank you for taking the time to write it. If I could do one thing 1/10th as beneficial to the hobby, I would certainly have accomplished something.), I decided to take the plunge and buy a few cards. I decided to attempt a few complete player/pose runs, beginning with Jerry Denny. Welcome to my addiction.

Great California Brown, Rob.
It's been great reading about all these guys in the book. Not only is the book a great lesson on the cards of Goodwin & Co., but also it is a great primer on the early history of the game. Brown is one of the guys I considered collecting. Still not sure who I am going to collect next. Maybe van Haltren? Maybe the players from the Syracuse team (where I live)? |

Looking to keep this great thread going. Here's some Hank O'Day poses/variations. Actually, I no longer have the card on the far right - sold it on eBay shortly after O'Day's election to the HOF was announced.

I agree Jay, some gorgeous cards. If we are extending to cabinets, I'll share one of my better images. It also represents the only copy of Bennett that I'm aware of with "DETROIT" not erased from his jersey. I've now studied 5 different N173 Bennett cards and perhaps a dozen of his N172s and this is the only one I've seen with "DETROIT" still present. This would mean nothing to others but kind of neat for a Detroit collector.
|
That Bennett is awesome.
|
|
Joe-- that Bennett is truely a great card. It belongs nowhere else than in your Detroit collection.

Joe and Jay,
I really want to thank you both for all of the information that you have given me regarding the N172 cards. Your book is an icon in my home. I also wanted to post the Stump Weidman (Weichman) - Detriots / New Yorks misspelled card for others to see. Ted |

Thanks for the compliments on Bennett. Ted, that is a neat Wiedman variation.
The scan below represents my newest pick-ups (both arrived today). Can anyone figure out why I'd possibly have interest in these two cards? If you know my collecting focus and have really studied the OJ set, you just might be able to figure it out. Jay Miller is excluded from this competition :) |
Are you collecting 0-numbers??
Everyone has posted some great stuff so far... I would but I'm bed ridden. Anyway, this thread in entertaining so thanks, and I hope it keeps going! |

|
Beautiful Ewing card, Derek. Never seen that pose before.
|
Quote:
I had seen the pose (bat at 45), but from 1887 and saying "Capt." instead of "C.", but this one is awesome (in my opinion), since the image is so wide, at least compared to the 1887 version! The only thing holding this card back is some writing on the back...oh, and that it's not his "rookie" card. |

My very first two Old Judge cards after many years of tackling the T 206. I am already loving the challenge and the research. Thanks to Jay and Alan for these two fine cards..
