Just got these in the mail yesterday...sort of an incredible story as I've been chasing this ghost for about 6 years now and he keeps crossing my path....I have 6 more from this collection headed my way, but still in transit.
If interested in my journey with Clarence Steen click on the link.. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=67267 |
Those are some cool letters Dan. I've got this one on it's way to me http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdef7daa8.jpg
Pretty rough condition as its a magazine photo that has been glued into a scrapbook page and cut out, but it has a beautiful signature of an American sports icon, Jackie Robinson http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...psd3efaa8a.jpg http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...psaedcf96b.jpg |

Just got this today,,,
Original sports cartoon art, 1930 pen and ink on heavy art paper mounted on a heavy board. The artist was noted Boston sports cartoonist Bob Coyne (1898 - 1976). The artwork is of Cy Young and measures 17"x 16". Absolutely spectacular and best of all it contains a 1930 dated Cy Young AUTOGRAPH and inscription at the bottom. Also signed by the artist Bob Coyne. |

I have been collecting signed Perez-Steele post cards for over 25 years and was really disappointed when they stopped issuing the set a little over 10 years ago. I'm down to needing just the big dogs to have every possible post card that could be signed. Recently, I was looking through old REA catalogs and saw that last year the original Dick Perez paintings for most everyone enshrined since 2001 were sold at auction. Each of the paintings, in the style of the original post cards, was there for me to see and when I Googled the images on the internet, they were in surprisingly good resolution. So I decided to print each of the "unreleased" paintings out on 4x6 glossy photo paper and create my own extended set...here's the first one I've gotten back...
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...277/boggs-wade It would be an understatement to say I'm reinvigorated to pick up autographs of Ripken, Ozzie, Ryne, et al... |
Big Six,
I was scrolling through this post quickly on my phone, saw the Boggs pic and thought "wtf?!?". Not to pat myself on the back, but I thought I was the smartest guy out there assembling these and that one day when the project was over I would post them all on message boards and everyone would be blown away. Ive been getting them printed at Walgreens and they come out beautifully. The best part is if you lose one in the mail, youre out nine cents. Looks like Ive got some competition..... |
Dan, those letters are great! Such a nice insight into the mindset of fan-player relationships when the players were more like regular guys than movie stars.

Wow, that's a nice set, Sean...did you get all of those signed through the mail?
|
thanks! yeah I have gotten over 300 TZ cards signed through the mail (except Shatner I paid $80 for him at a show :/ ) since 2000. I still need nimoy and takei on that particular subset. If anyone has any suggestions Im all ears :)
|
Talei was in Denver earlier this month for comi-con so I would check some of the other states comi-con events where he may show up at. Also, and obviously, I'd check the Star Trek conventions where you might be able to ge Nimoy also.
|
Great set by the way!
|
Thanks mike! Yeah I found out about takei a day too late so just missed that one. Appreciate any help you can send me :) I love getting the base cards signed and have one of every card from the 50th anniversary set signed m just minus one (waiting on george clayton johnson on that one). Got some real toughies too like landau, jackie cooper, dennis weaver, lloyd bochner etc. :)

I finally found my Joe Dawson signature for my 1927 Pirates collection!!! Just about gave up hope of ever finding one and boom! Even better because it's the only one I've ever seen from his playing days. Won this last night in a 1920's Clean Sweep lot:

Carlos Zambrano
1 Attachment(s)
Not vintage, but I got my Carlos Zambrano no-hitter ticket signed by "Z' at tonight's Mud Hens game. They were hosting the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (AAA affiliate of the Phillies). Zambrano is currently trying to work his way back up to the majors. He shut out the Mud Hens (AAA affiliate of the Tigers) 3-0 last night.
Zambrano was very nice and knocked out about 10 autographs including mine after BP. Zambrano never seems to do paid signings, so this is a nice addition to my collection. I now have 122 different signed MLB no-hitter tickets in my personal collection. :) |
Nice Scott.
|
Nice addition to the no hit collection. Cool to hear that Z's handling his demotion well. Granted he has made $100M; guess I would be cool too

What's the story on why a game between the Cubs and Astros was in Milwaukee?

Because the game venue was changed at the last minute, only computerized tickets were issued to this game. Chicago is pretty close to Milwaukee so quite a few die-hard Cubs fans made the hour trek north to catch the game. Carlos Zambrano made it worth their while, pitching the most unusual of no-hitters; the first and only no-hitter ever pitched in a neutral stadium... |

Nothin like a Vintage HOF sig, done with a with steel fountain pen, on a tough card. Granted there are a few Marquards floating around out there on different cards, but many appear signed later on in his life. Is this possibly from his playing years?

VERY Cool Marquard, but.... Nobody EVER signed Caramel cards or Tobacco cards when they were made or during their careers, it just didn't happen even though there are some certified (FAKE) ones. If you ever see one, its fake and run away. The late 1920's are the first instances of signed cards that I can ever recall seeing and even those were all larger format cards that were more like photos than cards. Goudey cards are basically the earliest you will ever find (with a few exceptions) of signed cards that autographed around the time they were made.
Also, you can tell that the card was signed after it was creased so it was obviously signed after it had some age to it. I would guess it was signed in the 1940's-1950's (still using a fountain pen) which is still VERY early for a signed c. 1910 Baseball Card. It doesn't change anything, it is a BEAUTIFUL item, I just figured I would throw that info out there to help you correctly date the item. Rhys |
3-year autograph mini autograph project completed
5 Attachment(s)
Not pre-war, but lots of fun... My daughter Sadie helped me complete a 3-year autograph project on Saturday.
Perhaps some of you remember the Armando Galarraga "Almost Perfect" game on June 2, 2010. Umpire Jim Joyce blew the call on the 27th out to prevent Galarraga from becoming the 21st player in ML history to throw a perfect game. My wife, kids and I are die-hard Detroit Tigers fans. When the game occurred in 2010, as is typical on most nights in our household, we watched in HORROR as fate stole an unbelievable game from Galarraga and the Tigers. I felt compelled to e-mail MLB commissioner Bud Selig the next day to see if I could convince him to reverse the call. No chance, as Mr. Selig is the "Master of Inaction"... I was shocked to receive a response letter back from Mr. Selig a few days later. Over the last few years, I have managed to track down all three of the players mentioned in Selig's letter regarding one of baseball's strangest games: Armando Galarraga, umpire Jim Joyce and finally Detroit Tiger's Manager Jim Leyland. Leyland does not frequently sign autographs, so I was thrilled when a baseball card show in the Detroit area offered up the Detroit skipper on Saturday. Mission accomplished! Here is the completed letter project; something that my family and I can share forever... I also have included photos of my daughter Sadie, Mr. Leyland, Paws (the Detroit Tiger's mascot) and me. Additionally, here's a photo of a theme ball signed by Armando Galarraga and umpire Jim Joyce surrounding the "Almost Perfect" game. BTW, Galarraga and Joyce wrote a terrific book that I recently read on the game entitled "Nobody's Perfect". Check it out, it's a great read Enjoy! |
Scott- I love love LOVE that letter! I'll give you 20 dollars for it!
Just kidding of course. What a great item and keepsake. |
Great piece Scott!

Can't wait to get this in mail. Sadly tho, due to my serious financial trouble, am trying to sell my Red Sox/jimmy fund Lic plate to help pay for it. Still, this is a nice item IMO, plus its BROOKLYN and a solid player or I wouldn't have bit.:)

Just picked up from Mr. Stinson....1940's Bill McGowan signed baseball....ball also signed by Nick Polly. Attachment 104680
|
Nice McGowan ball, one thing about McGowan that I could never figure out is why he had 2 totally different types of signatures. I recently bought a McGowan letter with a signature similar to your ball, but got concerned as Ron K.'s book makes no mention/illustration of that signature. I feel better after seeing your purchase.
Perhaps Jim can enlighten us with Bill's signature variations. |
It looks as if he had a "professional" signature and a "ball park" or "fan" signature. The signature on this ball is what I have mostly seen on formal letters and other items that may have been signed for someone of importance. Hopefully, Jim can give more background.

Tazdmb,
Love the Lieb/Gehringer/Heilmann signed book. I always try to squirrel them away when the price is right. Quote:

Thanks,
How many of these do you have? I am trying to find out more information about the signing, apparently it was at The Boston Store? (Per AH) but that is all the information I have. Any light you could shed would be appreciated. Go State! (My alma mater) |

IMHO you have one of, if not the nicest, collections on the board that I have seen. |
This is not something I received this month, but seeing the phantom Perez Steele cards on this thread reminded me of a phantom Marvin Miller HOF postcard I have in my collection. I came across this mock up of Miller's HOF plaque many years ago, and since I knew he wasn't going to be inducted before his death, I thought it would be cool to get him to sign it. I resized the photo and gave it a yellow background to match the modern day HOF plaque postcards, and mailed it off to him in NYC. I have 2 or 3 in my collection signed at different times, can't remember the exact number. The first time I sent to him, the Mitchell Report had just been released. In my letter, I mentioned how I was disappointed that so many of today's big stars were named in the report. Boy was that the wrong thing to say! I received a note back from him written on three index cards ripping me a new one in a nice way. I'll post the note for you guys to see, if I can find it.

My newest pickup in a trade from Gnaz.(Thanks Greg)
I always wanted one of these, but they always seemed to come up when I didn't have the money. Worked out a great trade for it. Here is what it looked like when I got it. Ty Cobb check http://www.net54baseball.com/attachm...1&d=1370627947 I don't care for the PS cards framed, so I removed the check and printed a print of one of my favorite Kreindler's to go with it. Here is what it looks like after I reframed it. I think a bit more fitting for the "King of Swing" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...-280101371.jpg Best, Mark |
Fittingly, I just received this in the mail today from a fellow collector in a trade. It really caps off a great month of June for me, I was able to fill some significant holes in my projects namely my 1927 Pirates, I found my Joe Dawson. Today, I was able to scratch one off my list of Yankees Captains with this Everett Scott:

tazdmb,
I should have four or five copies, plus two others with with only Lieb's signature, and two more with just Lieb & Gehringer's signatures (not sure why Heilmann is lacking from those copies). One of the copies signed by all three came with an original newspaper advertisement announcing the appearance of Lieb, Gehringer, and Heilmann at a Detroit-area Hudson's Department store. The seller of this particular signed book copy was under the impression that was where thee signatures were obtained. But he was not the original owner of the book, so it might have been conjecture based on the inclusion of the newpaper ad among it's pages when he obtained it. I will try to locate that book copy and the advertisement. Not sure when it might be at the moment. EDITED: I just realized that I do not have the advertisement. I believe the seller told me about the ad but he retained the original (why ?). I should have asked him to mailed me a photocopy of the advertisement but it failed to cross my mind at the time. In hindsight, I wish I had. Quote:
