May pickups 2013

Had some pocket change burning a hole in the pocket. Was going after 2 monsters the last few days...well would needed a loan...to win those.

Anyways..i had my eye on this low-end card and wanted a PSA10 version.
Yes..there are many floating around and of various graders.
Got a great deal on a best offer.

Neat image of Mantle, and being from St Louis, always like to see cards of The Man. Saw a Series game in St Louis in 1964 against the Yanks. Unfortunately Stan had retired after 1963

Is anyone eyeing lots in the Heritage Auction going down tonight and tomorrow?

I'm bidding on three high numbers for my '52 set, and depending on how I fare, will have some photos soon to post. The theme will be coaches. :)

I had 2 bids at HA..got outbidded on the 54 Bowman, but still have 1 left.

Here's my big one for May. I was bidding on three high number '52s up for sale on Heritage Auctions. Wound up getting beat out on two of them. But the one of the three I wanted most, I won. This card is a winner, fantastic colors, near perfect centering. I plan on cracking and crossing to PSA, and I think it has excellent upgrade potential, 7 maybe even 7.5 on good day.

VERY sharp card! I'm jealous. Good Luck on the crack and PSA submission. Let us know how it goes......

CobbSpikedMe 05-07-2013 07:18 PM

David,

Are you going for a Carousel disc set? I've been thinking about going for a back run of all of these discs for just Jim Wynn in PSA slabs. I have one now and really like it. Of course it's the very common Isaly's back but when I got it in hand it really grew on me and made me want try for all the backs.

Thanks.

Yeah, I know, not a baseball card ;) but they don't have a pickups thread over on the football side, and I didn't want to start an entire thread for one card. I thought about posting this in the lacrosse forum, as Jimmy was one of the greats in that sport as well, but I can't seem to find it. ;)

Thanks, Jason. :) Yep, it's centered a little bit high t/b, but that's about as good as it gets with this card. I also noticed that orange back really shows even the slightest of wear. If a card from the late 50s could ever be considered "tough", this is one of them.

I've got Lou Brock with every back. Relatively easy to do on E Bay. The toughest will be by far the cup lid, with Red Barn and the MSA ad back also somewhat scarce.

As for Carousel, I've got about 10 I think, I have no idea how many Carousel backs are out there, but they don't come up often, and frequently the same backs come up. I suspect many of the blank back ones were supposed to get a Carousel stamp but never did.

I think I had 18 diff Brooks Robinson Carousel backs (unfortunatly sold them 10+ years ago). A good resource for a list of those would be to track down Mets collector Dave Berman from NY. He had a pretty comprehensive list. His contact info shows up in SCD every once in a while.

Collecting in the 80's I found the Saga back to be most difficult for me with the MSA ad back second. Being in the great lakes region, I would occasionally find Red Barn in "misc" or $1.00 boxes from Wisconsin dealers, but agree that those are one of the toughest. For me, collecting MSA discs was one of the really fun parts of my Brooks Robinson collection.

They are identical in almost every way (except the writing on the back). No idea who manufactured though. I know very little about the issue, but I love pick up Mantle coins whenever I find them.

Chris, The wonderful thing about those, a long time ago when not encased, is that you could easliy pluck the paper out with a thumb and forefinger (who cared then?), or with Mom's eyebrow tweezers, and then swap them out into another color disc.

BTW, your push/pulls are tremendous. It's like having Mick and Yogi staring through my window!

Keep the faith,

Paul

Haha, several months ago I came across a "rare" Mantle in a black disc. It really threw me off for a bit until someone on the site told me about people swapping the discs. It actually looked pretty nice that way...

Very nice Doby, Julz - I also love the '52 Bowmans, as they were my first card set as a kid. The focus, or registration, is of course a common problem with them. I think I put together about three or four sets just trying to upgrade from fuzzy focus to sharp registration.

Thanks to a fellow board member for a smooth transaction. A nice card that fits my modest budget. Funny thing is - a little while ago, I didn't think I would get the Mantle Rookie any time soon - so I purchased a nice looking 1953 Bowman instead.

..then decided to go for a 1951 Bowman. Saved a little...sold an N172 Keefe...and had planned on a nice SCG40 or PSA 3. ...some household issues came up and decided a "2" would fit my collection nicely instead. If I had sold the '53 Bowman, I may have been able to get a grade higher...but I really do like the '53 and didn't want to part with it.

...oh, and my scanner sucks.

Nice, Jeff. I've always liked the card itself, and wondered what they were talking about when the photo was shot. Looks like McCovey was nice enough to lay down his auto with the same angle and proportion to Mays' signature, which really adds to the eye appeal. Cool card!

See i have no clue on these odd-ball cards.

CW 06-01-2013 11:48 AM

Hey, at least you had enough of a clue to figure it out afterwards. :)

Whenever I see someone getting really excited about a super beat up, late 60s/early 70s Topps card, I can almost assume it's a Venezuelan. Then when you see the back, you think to yourself, "!Si, está un Venezuelan!"

Nice grab, Chris!

pawpawdiv9 06-01-2013 11:59 AM

I received my lots from REA this morning...yes it is truely Xmas in June.
Trying to crop pics and stuff to begin selling the stuff others have interest in.
The Berk Ross set was something..they looked really old and nice and with 2 Mantles. Then i looked at the Red Heart (which i already own one) and then there it was the Dan-Dee.....truely WOW!

Just found out some neat info on the 1964 Traindos/Mantle(back) thru a Ebay listing: Had a B/O for 995.00 and sold for 577.77
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-TOPPS-S...-/190583543323
Presented here is a rare 1964 Topps Salesman Sample Panel with #50 Mickey Mantle on the back graded PSA Authentic. It’s 1 of 1, the only panel ever graded with Gus Triandos on the front. In fact, only one other single Topps Panel card with Mantle on the back has ever been graded (it features the A.L. Strikeout Leaders on the front). This spectacular card was once part of a 3-card Topps Salesman sample, and is cut superbly with no creases and stunning EX/MT-NEAR MINT condition. PSA doesn’t currently assign grades to these hand cut cards yet, but I believe it would merit PSA 6.5 if assigned a grade.
If you compare the back of this Mantle to the back of a regular 1964 Topps #50 Mickey Mantle card back, you’ll notice a striking difference: The back of his Salesman panel features a deep rich orange color, versus the lighter/paler orange on the back of his regular Topps issue.

Now am i wondering??? Now that i have one?? IT WILL BE ON EBAY NOW!!!!!! link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200929985527...84.m1555.l2649
HERES MORE DETAILED INFO on the salesman sample:

It’s in the biography. The first card mentions Mantle’s (then) 15 World Series homers, “breaking a mark set by Babe Ruth.” The second one stops at the reference to the homers. No Ruth.

Thanks Chuck! And Chris, did you really think I would have been that excited over a regular topps in that shape?

The climate in that latitude is not really generous to card preservation. I wonder how long it's been in the States (assuming you bought it here). Any history behind it?

I wish I had gotten some of the history behind it. I did buy it from someone in the States though, so I would imagine it has been here for at least a little while. A few of my Venezuelans came from a seller in Venezuela though, which was pretty neat.

I think it has been brought up before, but I think you have Bill White, John Roseboro and Hank Aaron in the background on that card.
