T206: post your perfect cards
There had to be some quality control in this set - let's see your examples of cards that turned out the way the 'creators' intended.
I think this example hit the specs pretty well: |

Great cards everyone. Jim, that Johnson portrait is my favorite and yours is as good as it gets. These aren't perfect, but as close as I'll get.

These two have always been favorites, the colors are so vibrant. Thanks John and Mike.
Sorry for the bad photo quality. |
Although, this Cobb is just an SGC 40, I think it's the highest graded (SGC or PSA) AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 Cobb. Let's see if some one here will prove me wrong on this claim ?
http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...psbd913b5a.jpghttp://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0801c051.jpg I would be remiss....if I did not include my Chase and Johnson, too. http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...aseblue50x.jpghttp://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...seblue50xb.jpghttp://i529.photobucket.com/albums/d.../awjohnson.jpg Actual graded cards are better than my fuzzy scans. SGC POP report indicates only 2 bat off shoulder Cobb's graded....SGC 10 and SGC 40 (my card). PSA POP report indicates 3 graded......PSA A, PSA 1, PSA 3 Q Don't know what Beckett's is ? What year was that auction ? TED Z |

Fine, so mine isn't the highest graded.
Why doesn't SGC have this SGC 60 Cobb (bat off shoulder) tabulated in their POP report ? TED Z |
|
Hi Ted,
SGC pop reports are better than PSA on backs , but none are perfect... I know of a PSA 4 Cobb AB and a couple of 3's.... Nice card... Be well Brian |
I don't get paid to grade cards you will have to ask them that question.
Any other accurate t206 information you need we will provide that free. |
Great stuff guys. Ted your collection is amazing. Here are a couple more. Thanks to all for sharing. I love me some T206's.

The SGC 60 Cobb is in the pop report, it was prior to them designating poses. There are four, including the 60 in that line on the pop report which doesn't specify a pose. They have graded two since the change for a total of six.

To me there are 2 perfect cards in this set (1) Cobb - bat off shoulder and (2) Johnson - portrait. All others are a distant second.

Cool thread. i think these hit the mark pretty well, front & back...(centering, registration, boldness, etc). i have found that typically Uzits & Tolstois (and even EPDGs) can look rather light (not printed boldly). i looked far & long for these examples.

I've ventured out and started collecting '38 Goudey's also, but that hasn't slowed me down from collecting 206's. I'm currently focusing on tough commons. This week alone I've grabbed Ganley, Burch, and Magee. Hoping to score a Reulbach in my price range as well. I won't hijack this thread any longer, but if you ever want to talk cards or bs, shoot me a message...I'm always up for catching up! |
Mike, I always enjoy seeing that UZIT.

[QUOTE=E93;1098000]Maybe so. One more for fun
Jim, this is now one of my all-time favorite cards. The Cobb bat-off-shoulder is my favorite front, and with an Uzit back. Incredible. Can you tell me how long you've owned it? |
These were perfect, until some players decided to write their names on 'em. :D
The credit for these beauties goes to Jeff Morey, who had the foresight to send really sharp T206s to their subjects; as well as the players themselves, who returned them unscathed. <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iVXWEz_OSRpmQm3cPgM96jiJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ScLDMNA6TAY/S7FELIol4BI/AAAAAAAAHw8/B9DHvy6ObL0/s800/Doyle%2520Portrait%2520Auto%2520SGC%252080.jpg" height="800" width="502" /></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_yUh7gA3B6B6qaX6QUzW6ziJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BK8U50vWxuk/S7FEba38hiI/AAAAAAAAHxM/TI0uJ-kD2TA/s800/McBride%2520Auto%2520SGC%252060.jpg" height="800" width="499" /></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/N3p_7e6yBOP4PTNtSjQqDTiJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hyWgCvwrVkk/TlGEyBCy0EI/AAAAAAAAJXY/xGdpZZvb51g/s800/Wheat_SGC_40.jpg" height="800" width="488" /></a> |

A couple of low grade beauties look like they jsut came out of the pack..
|
Doug, how on earth did those cards get graded as twos?
|
Tony, I have a 3.5 that I'll post later for the sake of comparison. It looks much worse than your threes.
|
The Grading Pyramid
Grading is a pyramid. At the top, you have the 10s. 10 means perfection and thus all 10s will be identical. As you go down the pyramid, grades are set for a variety of reasons -- 9s almost all look the same, but 3s, 2s and 1s have a huge number of potential flaws, including paper loss on reverse, creasing, corner wear, etc. What makes a card an SGC 30 could be a variety of factors that tell you nothing about the eye appeal of the card without looking at it.
Professional grading is not designed to reflect eye appeal. It is designed to point out flaws, often hard to see or hidden, in a piece of card board. When you see a clean-looking SGC 30, you actually know there are a lot of hard to see flaws. When you see a badgered up SGC 30, what you see is what you get. But not all SGC 30s will look alike -- in fact, at that level of the "pyramid" you will have a lot of different looking cards. This becomes problematic when sellers try to sell a PSA 2 for what a previous PSA 2 sold for. Without comparing both cards, going by the number alone gets you nowhere because what you don't know about the previous card is whether the damage was similar or whether the eye-appeal was comparable. Sometimes you can get a pretty good deal on a nice looking 2 when a seller is willing to use a previous ugly 2 as a comparable. This is why they say, "Buy the card, not the holder." |
Tony nice cards and Scott good advice. For those of us on a budget, we buy the best looking example we can within our budget. For me that is a PSA 2 or 3 with some minor imperfection. Scott spells out my philosophy to a "t".
|
I had thought of creating a web-page(s) containing the most perfect color/registration cards that we could locate for each card in the set (belonging to members only). This might be a good start.
By the way - corners and edges don't count when it comes to color and registration :), but of course, you wouldn't want really crappy borders detracting from what's in the middle. |
Best in Show for each Back
It seems that most are like myself... Retentive about the centering and registration... Forgiving on the soft corners....
However, sometimes the back makes all the difference... Thanks for sharing.... |

Not a bad green Cobb example, but the colors aren't very vibrant.
|
Tony- amazing cards, you have a great eye!
|
I've always been impressed with Konetchy, glove low
The illustration of the base behind him, in the dirt, is just one of the details that makes it pop, as opposed to some of the bad illustrations in the set (Spike Shannon for one).
Don't own a Konetchy, but always have been impressed. |

Show and tell
I always love these threads, then someone else has to post at least 30 examples.
I will post one, my favorite when it comes to color and registration...... http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=8674 |
