Incidentally, besides the #423 you have, Rhubarb was in issues #466 and #563 as well (minus the baseball theme, so strictly for fans of affluent felines). http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...Series/466.jpghttp://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...Series/563.jpg |
Thanks for the info all

Plan to do some research on this day in Cleveland.

Any chance the fat kid is "Fatty Joe Cobb" of the early Little Rascals? It would fit the time frame and the Los Angeles location of the photo too I think. It looks a LOT like him but just a guess. Rhys |
Man, how could you not love the Babe. He always put the kids first. Wish he didn't have to go through what he did as a child in an orphanage, but seems like it had a hugely positive impact on his life.

I don't think it is him as it is not mentioned in the slug or any other place this image is online I think it is just another chubby feller. But I am no ear, nose and ect specialist so I could be wrong. |

Couple of nice ol' pics:
1) Feb 1912 outside the left field wall of the old Huntington Ave. Grounds - Fenway would open two months later 2) 1908 Harvard basketball team - any basketball memorabilia from this era is so hard to find! |

I like this. may keep/may sell, but can't wait to get it..DODGERS.:)
|
Very cool Dodgers piece Scott -- also love the horse and buggy outside left field from the other Scott!
Greg |
I love the Horse and Buggy outside the Huntington Avenue Grounds too. Simply a wonderful image.
|
In keeping with March's pick-up theme, here is a postcard I received the other day (it's been trimmed down a little), of a 'bus' being used to transport a ball-team. Joe Wood describes such transportation in 'The Glory of Their Times'.
Also, a postcard showing buggies lined up along the 3rd-base line |
Great stuff -- apparently you have to be named Scott to add to your collection this month!

Christmas card from a supportive fan addressed to Tris Speaker concerning a Sept. 25, 1919 game fixing scandal. This accusation was made against him (and Ty Cobb) by major league pitcher Dutch Leonard in 1926.

I've been watching this 1909 KEIO postcard for a while - finally pulled the trigger.
And below KEIO's rival, Waseda, from their 1911 U.S. tour. |
interesting
Quote:
Pretty nice...wouldn't mind seeing some close-in shots, especially of that top one...I looked up Keio...had no idea what it was....see above it's a univeristy.."It is known as the oldest institute of higher education in Japan" |

I'll start a thread when it's ready to accommodate articles by you all. |
I'll be bookmarking that site. LOVE IT
|
Thanks Scott. The three featured 1911 teams were the subject of an article I wrote back about that time, and the stats you see were gathered to support the article. I'll probably expand it to include a few more Chicago and Kansas City teams, and begin working backward toward 1900.

Here are three more. The Marty O'Toole is a Max Stein, I believe. The New York field is pre-Yankee Stadium, but not sure what park? The other, of course is Wrigley Field.

Thanks, Ben. Part of the reason I had to have it was that my son Daniel was born at New York Presbyterian Hospital, which stands where Hilltop Park once stood. Here's the hospital entrance where we first brought Daniel out into the sunlight. It stands at 167th Street and Broadway--precisely where that original entrance to the park stood.

Love how big that catchers mitt looks on that little kid:p
|
You can't see it from the photo, but the actual images are also embossed, so the catcher's mitt sticks out a bit.
Also, I didn't know about the Villisca axe murders, but looked them up last night. That will keep you up at night. |

I thought that image looked familiar. I have the same image on a postcard from St Joseph, MO. This image is also embossed.

Hey guys,
I picked this up last week from Rhys: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ps1e3e48bd.jpg I've ALWAYS loved this shot of Reiser, but never could find a nice print of it, nor did I know the date. Now I've got both (June 3, 1941 - homer in the first inning!) and man, I need to paint it. Not that many people like Reiser. But I sure as sh*t do! Graig |
Sweet pic!;)
|
Go Blue!!! Very cool image. The release of tension in his face and the three guys in a line. I can already imagine the painting. Do it!

Me Likey too. I WANT IT BAD :(

I won this in Legendary's auction late last month but it finally arrived today. This is a postcard written and signed by Walter Johnson in 1908, just a few months into his second major league season. He wrote this card to his friend while aboard a boat crossing from Cleveland into Detroit for a game against the Tigers. Walter mentions Washington's win over Cleveland that day. This is one of the earliest known examples of Walter Johnson's signature. Signed Walter J.

Great post-card. I skirmished with you briefly.
|
I was happy to win it. You got a great E107 though. I'm still looking for one of those.
I matched mine against the one Hunts sold that was only initialed. Mine was sent earlier. I heard of a third one floating around and I'd love to see the date on it. |
Simply a GREAT postcard

Congrats on your early WaJo postcard! I wasn't in a position to bid on this one because of some recent purchases, but I was defintely following it. I think this is truly one of the nicest Johnson signed pieces I have seen. :) |
Recent Vandy Type I pickups
7 Attachment(s)
My computer has been out of commission recently, but I have been fortunate to pick up some extremely nice new Vander Meer Type I photos in the interum.
Many thanks to net54's own Graig Kreindler and Rhys Yeakley for providing assists. ;) These photos feature: 1) Vandy signs for fans on 6-23-38 at the Polo Grounds not long after he pitched his double no-hit games. 2) Vander Meer pitching at Crosley Field in his rookie season 1938 3) Two photos of Vandy pitching at historic Wrigley Field in September 1939. 4) Vandy being greeted by female fans upon return to Cincinnati in late June 1938. Vander Meer would go on to start the 1938 All-Star game at Cincinnati less than 2 weeks later, picking up the win for the NL. Vandy only gave up 1 hit in 3 IP at the mid-summer classic in '38, shutting down HOF'ers Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Gehringer and a host of others. 5) Major leaguers Johnny Vander Meer and Al Lyons greet Rollie Helmsley upon arrival at Sampson (NY) Naval Base in 1944. The heavily vaunted "Sampson 9" had just won the first 25 of 26 games that they had played in prior to Helmsley joining the team- some team! |
