The Nun's Wagner

1 Attachment(s)
So our poster who has the Wagner would like to come back on the board. I think he wants to explain himself. I didn't want the other thread being able to be edited, for the moment, so this thread. And I am going to reinstate Andrew and we can take it from there....Not sure how else to accomplish letting him back and protecting the other thread's posts.

vintagetoppsguy 02-18-2013 08:46 PM

Clearly Photoshopped. Look at the slab. The corners are square. Come on!

http://www.net54baseball.com/attachm...1&d=1361245035

Jacklitsch 02-18-2013 08:51 PM

I tend to agree that it looks photoshopped. Slab appears a bit larger than normal.

ullmandds 02-18-2013 08:54 PM

Who's the bozo on tv?

flavius 02-18-2013 08:55 PM

Even if it is photoshopped, this is a trade you are obviously going to do in person. If he doesn't have the card, he won't get yours.

I would encourage him to post a 5-10 second video with the card.

TNP777 02-18-2013 08:57 PM

I'm pretty sure I know who manufactured that dresser.

ctownboy 02-18-2013 08:59 PM

1) If he owns the card then what is the story behind it?

2) Why he is willing to sell it for $75,000 when the last sale, to the Dr. in Philadelphia, was for $220,000?

David

Al C.risafulli 02-18-2013 09:00 PM

That's pretty cool how the slab sticks to his fingers like that without his fingers really touching the sides. Is he Spider-Man? But, like, TINY Spider-Man, since the slab is almost as big as his entire face.

I don't know what Heritage was thinking; nuns consigning a card is nowhere NEAR as interesting as Tiny Spider-Man consigning it.

Shoele$$ 02-18-2013 09:00 PM

Thread of the year yet??......:)

Gotta agree though, those corners are like perfect points on that slab

Give him some points on creativity though....

ullmandds 02-18-2013 09:01 PM

I Dont know...the kids room is a mess! Clothes on the floor...lotion and paper towel near the tv...he doesnt look like the cool kid on the boat surrounded by hotties?!

I bet wags is sticky!

queencitysportscards 02-18-2013 09:01 PM

Look at the reflection in the back mirror...see anything? If he was indeed holding the card it would show up in the mirror in the background...

novakjr 02-18-2013 09:02 PM

Hmmm! 3 bottles of lotion, a roll of paper towels, what appears to be some sort of gay porn-star on the tv, and the complete and total look of shame on his face.. I wonder what's going on there?:eek::eek:

Edited to add: Damn, Peter. You beat me to it.. No pun intended.

vintagetoppsguy 02-18-2013 09:02 PM

Whenever you scan an SGC slab, there are certain glare marks around the edge of the holder from the scanner. If you blow up his pic and compare the Wagner he is holding to the Wagner in the original pics, the glare marks are identical.

leon let me back on the board. I didnt know this was worth as much as it is. with this in mind i am going to list the card if i do somewhere else. I didnt mean to stir up this amount of chaos as I do use this board alot and am always diligent in my transactions.

The card holder edges--top, bottom and side to side--are perfectly parallel to the top, bottom and sides of the picture he submitted.
PERFECTLY PARALLEL. A PERFECT RECTANGLE.
I used the selection tool in photoshop (dotted line) to illustrate the point in this blow-up.

So the Wagner is absolutely flat in reference to the photographer's vantage point. That occurring naturally is as close to impossible as you can get.

I don't know the guy, so I lack a horse in this race, but he obviously held something (perhaps a graded card), took a picture and then superimposed a 'professional' scan of the Wagner in front of it.

vintagetoppsguy 02-18-2013 09:19 PM

How do you explain a (seemingly) wealthy gentleman showing that he won the same card in a Heritage auction, on Youtube, from a few years ago? He's got your card!!

npa589 02-18-2013 10:02 PM

Why not take a shot with your face next to the card so that the card can be seen more clearly. If you zoom all the way in on this card it is a total blur.

Tim Kindler 02-18-2013 10:25 PM

I don't believe this!

I have been working like crazy all evening, since about 3:00 to now-12:18 A.M. Indiana time on preparing lessons for upcoming standardized testing for my students; and I thought I would jump on the board before I crashed in bed.......when low and behold, I missed the thread of the year, maybe all-time!:p (Wow! that was a run-on sentence.) This is the funniest thread & baseball card related thing I have ever seen! There have been some crazy threads in the past week on our board! Leon, you have to be going nuts as the administrator lately! My dull Monday turned into "I can't wait to get on the board" Tuesday!

ctownboy 02-18-2013 10:28 PM

At 11:59, I asked how Andrew acquired the card and why he is willing to sell it for $75,000 when it supposedly last sold for $220,000.

At 12:33, Andrew lists it in the Tobacco section of the B/S/T.

At 12:55, Andrew states he didn't know the card was worth so much money.

SO ---

Andrew still hasn't answered HOW he obtained the card and hasn't answered WHY he is willing to sell it for about 1/3 of the price ti last sold for.

Furthermore, he states that he has been on this board for awhile yet doesn't know that a T206 Wagner (even in THAT condition) is worth quite a bit of money.

Strange.....

David

Very True Tim!

ctownboy 02-18-2013 10:33 PM

Tim, it is a conspiracy Leon and the other Admin's have cooked up.

Bring back Cobb and Edwards and their T206 Wagner, add in a guy who thinks Comiskey is in a photo from 1879 and not only has experts to prove it but also auction houses willing to sell it for him (while totally ignoring an expert in photo ID) and THEN to top it off, have a guy named Andrew come on with HIS T206 Wagner.

Why would they do this to us? RATINGS!!!!!

They are about to sell the board to a massive company that is looking to expand its empire and the more page clicks they can have the higher the price they can sell the board for.

David

David makes a good point. As funny as this whole thread is, it doesn't negate the fact that a scam was attempted to be perpetrated by someone that apparently doesn't know too much about cards. Fortunatey, most of us know the provenance of the card and the story behind it so nobody got taken.

I was tired earlier so I took a nap. When I woke up I noticed a locked thread and now this one. At one point I thought I might still be sleeping and only dreaming this since I do have many incredibly detailed dreams but most i'm usually at random colleges and schools or on vacation to places i've never been. I finally realized i'm not dreaming when I saw the Mona Lisa :D. I think that would of been the point where I would have woke up.

Yes, this is ceratinly a crazy, humerous thread; but you are correct in that someone knowingly (It certainly appears anyway) tried to scam others. Not being a lawyer or ever educated in such issues, is there really anything anyone can do about it though? :(

Gesh, i go to bed early one night and i miss all this.

bigwinnerx 02-19-2013 06:02 AM

And no reflections. That slab would be bouncing light, either room light or a flash. Its completely flat.

Did a good job of making it blurry so it sells the distance though.

Exhibitman 02-19-2013 06:10 AM

If a vampire doesn't cast a reflection in a mirror why can't we see his clothes? The Invisible Man's clothes were visible. Is a vampire more invisible than the Invisible Man? Does the Wolfman shed? If the Mummy is a rotten body trussed up in dirty bandages, wouldn't you smell him long before he could sneak up on you? How does Frankenstein's monster catch anyone? He walks like an old man with a bad hip. Why don't the Incredible Hulk's pants ever shred like the rest of his clothes?

When I read threads like this I think of these kinds of questions. I think I'll go fling some poo at the tourists outside my cage.

slidekellyslide 02-19-2013 06:52 AM

And to think yesterday I almost posted a question asking for your top ten all time threads on Net54. This still doesn't top "Archive", but it's pretty funny.

sdkammeyer 02-19-2013 06:56 AM

I am not even sure why I feel obligated to waste any more time on this, but I will. First off, I called you a f*cknugget in the other thread and for that I am sorry. That was rather childish of me ..... but not nearly as childish as the stunt you are trying to pull here.

If you didn't know before .... you now know that sports collectors are some of the most analytical people on Earth. The fact that you coyly played this off on the phone with Leon befuddles me. The fact that you regained your posting privileges but have not responded to this silly thread and the accusations made towards you befuddles me. The fact that you have no desire to make your story known befuddles me.

"Your card" can be seen here, in the hands of the present owner.... feel free to fast forward to 4 minutes and 14 seconds into the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcrvKWV0mxQ

Within 2 days after purchasing the "Nun Wagner" Dr. DePace was offered $60,000 more than he initially paid for it and his response was:

“I said, ‘What’s the matter with you guys?’ ” DePace said. “It’s no longer just a baseball card; it’s become a religious relic, a St. Jude of memorabilia. I’m keeping it.”

That info can be found here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/sp...nted=all&_r=1&

Furthermore, judging by this guys extensive collection, and his intention to open a non-profit museum, I am with belief that he didn't off the card on the side ..... money is no object to this wealthy man and as stated above, he isn't selling it.

So, how about you either come clean and admit you are a really bad scammer ..... or come up with a better story than the one you gave us?

Your words:

here it is guys.
been in the family for a long time, my grandfather picked it up when he was a kid from someone in georgia. We had it authenticated in 2008, he almost auctioned it off in 2010, however he was not satisfied with the price. I dont really like honus wagner, with this in mind Im willing to trade this for some other cards. Other cards Im interested in include 52 topps mantle 51 bowman mantle, 54 dan dee mantle, goudey babe ruth, cracker jack ty cobb, hank aaron rookie and other high end cards. I dont really know what to value this card at since it is so beat up, with that in mind if my trade is way to high let me know.

Maybe time to alert Andrew's local authorities. I know my local sheriff has been asking for help in busting Craigslist frauds and internet frauds in general.

We now also have his face, so we can all avoid him at shows as well.

So sad that someone would try this but I am not surprised. Andrew...get help before you land in prison.

bigtrain 02-19-2013 07:45 AM

A lot of fun is being had here but on a serious note, Andrew needs to really think about what he is doing here. I don't know what the law is where he is from but in New Jersey scamming someone out of $75,000.00 is a second degree crime that carries a presumptive state prison term. He does not look like someone who would survive incarceration.
