Big $$

Since collecting pre war, this card is major $$ purchase. I as looking for a nice low grade example, and by a stroke of luck, I happened to email our fearless leader Leon, asking if he knew of anyone that may have one for sale.

He had this card, and was looking to sell it. I bought it back in Jan 2009.

Great looking card in my opinion. Hopefully, I be adding some more big $$ cards from my wantlist in the near future.

This is my biggest single card buy, although I have spent more than this at once to acquire lots...

Walking in the park with my kids and Jamie (blunder) txts me and says "HOF BL460 on eBay, buy it".

Bought it without seeing card on the iPhone, took a bit of heat from the wife on the walk home :)

Thanks again Tony. That is probably one I should have kept :o. Nice card. It deserved the bump up. Nice other cards in the thread also.....

EvilKing00 02-17-2013 06:32 PM

my most expensive card is a 1986 fleer Jordan rookie (yea a basketball card / my only one) its a BVG 8 with sub grades of 9-8-8-9.5

Took me about a year to find the right one, im sure it will remain my highest priced card till i get to a real nice T205 cobb, or a drum back

bbcard1 02-17-2013 06:37 PM

the Ohara to finish my T206 520 set. It is low grade, but was still a lot of card.

My most expensive is this Arlie Latham Player's League card. The nicest quality picture on an 1890 Old Judge that I have seen. The scan is from my old scanner, looks a little better in person. I don't have many high priced purchased, I'd rather go for quantity over quality.

HRBAKER 02-17-2013 07:13 PM

Greg,
That's a tough spot. It is likely that some of your competition won't be as aware and be willing to "overpay" so to speak based on the incorrect grade. Then again as often as they surface you may have to bite the bullet and go for it.

Chris your are a great collector and i am sure you will have your Plank at some time in a near futur. Your are on the right way !

Thx !

Sean 02-17-2013 09:05 PM

Barry, those are great cards, I really love the Mathewson.
As for the long talk with the wife, I understand. I was only able to get my girlfriend on board when I was buying a Plank by finally making it clear that if it came to it, I would choose the card over her. It sounds bad, but it's true.
Nelson, sorry I can't post the Plank, but I'm at work now. I'll show it another time.:)

PS Since the Plank seems to have increased in value since I bought it (2006), she is actually mad at me that I didn't get two Planks (as if that was ever an option for me).

Great cards to all - Barry, Ive spent some time looking at that Matty of yours.

This is mine, nothing will ever top it. I will be paying this off for a little while into 2013 and isnt even my favorite CJ. This purchase was a long talk with my wife as I was outta work for a couple weeks when I made this purchase...I also tend to round down when talking to the wife. ;)

Bbce

Don't remember my biggest single card purchase, but I bought about $2500 worth of "junk" from BBCE about 2 years ago. My now ex-wife got an email alert for any CC purchase over $125. Steve Hart graciously broke up the payments in increments of $124 so she would never know. Paid him about $20 extra for the extra CC charges.

abothebear 02-18-2013 08:53 AM

Not expensive at all relative to most of the cards posted so far, and technically it is not a card, but it is the most I've paid for a card, and almost twice as much as the second most I've paid.

Wow.

Well, here's one for all of us with smaller budgets.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=10074

I'm pretty sure this is the card I paid the most for. Around 235.

The most I've spent on a lot was about 700 for the little batch of 8 SL blankbacks I got from Ebay maybe 10 years ago.

Of course I'm not counting nice stuff I bought decades ago when it was cheap. Probably the best buy was the Carolina Brights Red Cobb. A beater, but it was only fifty bucks.
The early 1900's Fred Parent bat I got in a swap for a modern store bat after it got cracked in a softball game is probably the best non-card deal.

I've been looking for this card for a while. Picked up last week on Ebay.

T206Collector 02-18-2013 01:41 PM

The most expensive card I've ever bought is Nelson's T206 Plank (Carter Collectoin). However, since I no longer own it, I guess I should be sharing my signed T206 of Walter Johnson, which comes in at several thousand more than any other card I've ever bought outside of the Plank. (Honoable mention go to the Magie I no longer own, and the 1951 Bowman Mantle SGC 60 I just added.)

The M110 set is really cool, they look fantastic in person. Best looking set out there IMO. I only have the Wagner, but who knows, maybe sometime in the future I will try to go after some of the others.

Not the most expense I paid but now worth the most. Got a 1914 CJ Marquard at small dealer in NYC for $200 some 15 years ago. Ungraded and, frankly, i didn't know then if '14 or '15 or if a reprint. Sent it away to PSA about three years later and happily found out it was 1) legit 2) a NM and 3) the highest graded. All those things still true these many years later.

All you high roller cards make me jealous! (j/k) :D

But I have the best girlfriend in the world of 15+ years who NEVER gives me grief about buying cards and is actually interested in what I buy and supports my collecting habits, so there! :p (j/k again) :D

Most expensive purchase, though not nearly most valuable card, was the '55 Clemente RC I picked up at the National last year. But I very well may pass that mark at this year's National. LOL

But to keep this pre-war appropriate, I did pick this guy up about 3-4 years ago for $35 (with a partially missing back). "Beat but neat" is my catch phrase! ;)
