1933 Goudey collectors here ?
One of my favorite looking set is the 1933 goudey.
Any 33 goudey collector here ? Anyone here have a complete set ? Your set is with or without the Lajoie ? I also added a little poll to see how many goudey collector we have on this board. I start this thread if anyone want to share is 33 goudey beauty here or speak about this beautifulll set ! |
When I first got into prewar as a teen my first prewar card bought for me was a t206, but the first card I purchased was a 33 Goudey. I wanted to do the entire set eventually, but I am very slow and doubt I will get there because I enjoy just adding new sets. Also I have become less willing to pay more money for a certain card just because that player was considered good (most of my cards are "common" players).
If I ever do complete the set Lajoie will not be in it, since he doesn't have 33 Goudey card. He has 1934 Goudey card (based off the year on the card) that was made to fill a gap in the 33 set. |
Some-what
I only collect signed HOF Goudey's...
|
For my part in the futur i want to build a goudey set. I really love that set and when i will go ahead and build the set i will have the Lajoie in it for sure...
I really love the story behind the lajoie card. |
I don't, but wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few of them. I love the Pepper Martin card.
|
i'm about 30 cards short of finishing my mid-grade set. most likely i'll get a lajoie RP and dirty it up to look like the rest. the ruths and gehrigs are tolerable, but $20k for a baseball card is a hard check to write.
|
I used to have a few dozen of them -- all gone now -- but not to collect the set. It just happened that way because I like them.

In 2009, I started collecting again after a long hiatus. Bought an upper deck goudey box and eventually put together the base + sp set. While searching ebay for modern goudeys. I ran across some real ones and thought I should grab one just for fun. 1933 Goudey Travis Jackson was the first pre-war card I bought and launched me into pre-war collecting. I collected all the hofers (minus Lajoie and the 2nd Gehrig) in 09, 10, and 11. Then last summer I decided to go for the rest of the set.
As usual I'm in the raw "fair/good/vg" neighborhood I'm now 15 shy for the set (counting Lajoie and a 2nd Gehrig) and my list of hofers to upgrade is at 16. here's a photo with the Manush upgrade I just received from Jason in front of my hall of fame cheese box. |
Completed my low grade set in 1999 minus the Lajoie.
My favorite set of all time! |

The '33 Goudey's represented my return to baseball card collecting after a 25 year hiatus. I used to collect cards as a kid in the early to mid 70's, but was met with a mother that "couldn't remember where she put my cards" when questioned about returning the cards of my youth to me as a 38 year old. That is when I turned to vintage and began my foray with the '33 Goudeys, a set which seemed "completable" and I loved their appearance.
It took me 2 1/2 to 3 years, but was able to complete the set..... http://www.psacard.com/PSASETREGISTR...et.aspx?s=1298 including this modestly graded Lajoie. |
I think it's a sweet looking set. I try to buy 1 goudey a month. I've been doing it now for about a year. I'm up to 13 cards. My goal is a set in PSA 6.
|
Hi.
The 33 Goudeys are my favorite set of all time. I once had a set about 75% done but had to sell off most of the cards. I have kept only 5 of my favorites but intend on tackling the set again. I doubt I'll get a Lajoie but you never know. What do low grade examples of the Lajoie go for? Jim |

DID SOMEONE SAY autographed 1933 goudey?!!>
oh no one did  Well Ill say it then! :D Attachment 88039 Attachment 88040 Attachment 88041 Whats weird is I prefer the cards with the Big League Chewing Gum ad yet the ones without I think have better art work  |

Sometime i think to pass my plank for afford a lajoie...perhaps one day i will do it and build only a 520 or 521 t206 set And congrat to you for your complete and almost complete set..the psa and sgc set i saw in this thread is verry cool |
Love the Goudeys..
My first prewar HOF pickups were a '34 (not '33) Goudey Gehringer and a T206 Waddell pitching, and these sets were the foundation for my prewar interest. I've since completed the HOFer run in both sets (minus Plank/Wagner and the '33/'34 Lajoie). I'd like to finish the Goudey set someday (need a few more Scott Forrest lots for that to happen), but am in no hurry.. No desire to go after the full T206 set, but love both sets.
|
I only have eight of them but all are HOFers. I think the 33 Goudeys and the 34 Diamond Stars are the most attractive cards. The 33 Goudey Klein and Herman are beautiful and my favorites in that set.

I love this set!! Top and 2nd shelf in this pic have some of my goudeys... Sorry for the pour pic quality - am still learning how to post pics... |
Would love to complete this set in psa 5 ish level (and already have some of the big$$ cards) but would be a looooooong road!! I would be happy to have it done even without the nap... Great thread. Love to hear the significance of this set to so many collectors...
|
I have a collector grade set minus both Gehrigs and Ruth's 53, 149, 181, and of course the Lajoie. I consider mine complete. When I win the lottery I'll fill in the missing pieces.
John |
Beautiful cards, i am a Yankee collector, and almost have the Yankee team set in 33 goudey. Just missing one Ruth (with the red background) and one of the 2 Gehrigs because i wont pay the money to buy two virtually identical cards.
Also have a few others in my Dodger and Giants and Jewish collections. Lessor condition on the superstars, but i love them just the same. |

after failing as a pitcher, he posted only 4 full seasons as a hitter but 4 very impresive seasons, i think he still has the record for hits in the NL oh well, can't uplode pics |
I was also brought back into card collecting by the '33 Goudey's, had never collected vintage until I was able to purchase a decent sized lot after a friend's dad had passed away. They are also the reason I eventually found this site.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...abeRuth-53.jpg I had never even seen a Ruth card in person before I first pulled this out of an old cigar box that the gentleman kept his cards in. RC |

Any board member won this auction in 2010 ?

I have been working on the set for six years. Three cards from completion. Gehrig #160, Ott #127 and Lajoie #106. Ott just takes finding the right one. Gehrig and Lajoie just take some major bucks.
I still have a bunch of upgrades to do, mostly some surprisingly hard to find commons. And two Ruths. More major bucks. http://imageevent.com/rgold/rgoldscollection1933goudey http://photos.imageevent.com/rgold/r...33gvance88.jpg |
I like 33 goudey, hope to pick some up soon

Count me in! :) I am 67 cards into the set. (39 of the 67 are HOF'ers) For the most part, I am concentrating on the PSA 4 level, but will probably make some exceptions with the more expensive cards. --definitely will get a reprint Lajoie-- For the most part this seems to be a completable, but I am curious and have a question for the people whom have completed or almost completed this set. Are there any of the 33 Goudey cards that were more difficult to find? I am talking about commons and or star players aside from the obvious higher dollar cards.
|
Every card in the set can be found in mid grade quite easily. There is no reason not to be selective regarding price and eye appeal. This is not a set where you need to grab any old card because you might not ever see another one.
Filling a hole, and then upgrading, will just cost you more money than is necessary. Just be patient. :D:D:D http://photos.imageevent.com/rgold/r...glazzeri88.jpg |
Ron, fantastic '33's Congrats!
I especially love the dark blue backgrounds like your Cronin http://photos.imageevent.com/rgold/r...3gcronin92.jpg |
Jay, I saw the Cronin scan and was going to make you an offer. But then I realized it was mine. :D:D:D
|
So far, I've limited myself to the hall of famers, and have all of them except Lajoie.

Ron, easily one of the best 1933 Goudey sets I've ever seen amazing!

one of my favorite sets !

Nice Goudeys. Did you know that Billy Urbanski was born in Linoleumville, New York? My extensive research leads me to believe that the town may have been named after the floor covering linoleum.
I am now researching whether Floyd Vaughan and hall of famer Arky Vaughan are the same person. Who says that the Goudey set isn't interesting or mysterious enough. :D:D:D |
I may be fighting a losing battle keeping this Goudey thread alive. :D
Nevertheless, here is one of my favorites, Hall of Famer "Sunny Jim" Bottomley. http://photos.imageevent.com/rgold/r...ottomley88.jpg |
Ron, you goudey are amazing. You own the complete set in high grade like that?
|
No, still three away from completion, and about eighty upgrades wanted. Hope to see you score your Lajoie one day. I still need one too. :D:D:D
|
I never get tired of seeing these Goudeys. Keep them coming.
Jim |
Jim, here is a low population first series common. The orange background is a favorite of mine.
Tommy Thevenow had only two career home runs, both inside the park and both in his signature season for the 1926 St. Louis Cardinals. He was credited with one more inside the park home run in the 1926 World Series when the official scorer refused to call Babe Ruth's misplay an error. http://photos.imageevent.com/rgold/r...thevenow88.jpg |
I love the '33 set, but can't afford to start collecting it - I would want the ones that look like they were printed on higher-quality cardboard, as opposed to the brown ones that look like they are about to crumble.
I Only have two - Gehrig and yellow Ruth. |
Ya, my budget is limited so I am sticking to presentable cards in the good range. I still love them. My Dad used to tell me stories about him buying these as a little kid. Too bad his Mom threw them away like so many other stories. I think that is where my love of these cards started.
Jim |
Jim, I have discovered two nice size Goudey collections here in Kansas City. Both in fair to very good condition, but untouched since the 1930's. Most of the Big League Chewing Gum banners had been cut off. I have been told kids back then didn't want the advertisement on their cards.:eek::eek:
By the way, many of the cards were off centered. When I see someone comment that a Goudey looks trimmed based solely on uneven borders, I know they have never been involved in a Goudey find. |
Interesting, I had never heard that. I have noticed quite a few trimmed cards on eBay where the big league chew banner has been cut off. I have to keep reminding myself that these cards were just cardboard back then and not big money like now.
On a separate note, do you know of any place to look up the history of 33 Lajoie sales? I know you are searching for one and I am curious if I'll ever be able to afford my dream card. Jim |
Cardtarget is pretty handy.. Especially for sets like '33 Goudey that has lots of sales. There's a few past Lajoie sales in here..

I gotta say, between the wood boxes and the organization and the cards shown............this is one awesome post |
Goudey
I completed my 1933 Goudey set (-#106) many years ago. Got a large group from a guy who auctioned his "find" at the early 1970's Labor Day show in S. California near Disneyland. I only needed the Lajoie a few years later when I came across one at a local flea market. The guy had a few '33s, some R337s, a US caramel and a nice Lajoie. He knew it had value and wanted around $1500 for it, which was a little below the going rate at the time. I couldn't pull the trigger so that's my why the hell didn't I buy it story.
|
Wow...some impressive cards here. I'm not a set collector but I really like this set and someday want to add a some HOF's like Foxx, Dean, Grove etc. I only have two, #144 Ruth and #92 Gehrig, as of now but hopefully that will change in time. Thanks for sharing.

He was the pitcher for Babe Ruth's Called Shot in the 1932 World Series. Two days before his death he said, "I gave my life to baseball, and I'll only be remembered for something that never happened".

I'd love to see a close-up scan of those copyright cards. |

Thanks Gary! I even took scans of my encapsulated ones and printed them to fill those sopts :)

Sean ,
How many signed Goudeys do you have? Tony |
Hi tony
I have 180 different signed. With doubles I have over 300. Been collecting them since 1988 :) |
Pretty impressive and they look great in the album. How often are you able to add to your collection?
|
the last few years have been really slow. There has been a real build up of vintage signed card collectors that started showing up about 6 years ago which is good for the value of what I have but bad for adding more. I did get about 8 last year but my goal of reaching 200 different is quickly fading. I managed to secure a complete Cubs team set signed and am a Al Simmons away from having a White sox set signed. Unbelievably, with 180 different I only not quite managed to complete two autographed team sets.
