February Pick Ups
I'm very excited about my latest figural additions:D
Ive never seen this piece before. It's eiight inches tall and well made. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...psf7d2ad44.jpg This trophy is all metal including the base, eight inches, and the ball is just about regulation size. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...psb34c4d0b.jpg I've never encountered this piece before either. It's extremely heavy, solid steal, and 5 inches high. It doesn't appear to be a trophy topper. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...pse9dfc7b3.jpg This is probably a small trophy (4inches). It is solid. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...psea7a80d7.jpg Not a rare piece, but very well executed. It's solid metal frame and stand are ornate and set off the batter image well. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc5223377.jpg |

Beautiful pieces Mike!!
This came off the board ..... but I love it nonetheless!! |
Nice pick-up, Steve. That's one of the cleanest ones that I have seen minus the holes punched, of course.

Did anyone here win this?
Boston Pennant I was curious if it was a Boston College pennant, or something along the lines of the Royal Rooters stuff, given that it's kind of a royal blue. In any case, I have ideas on restoration if the winning bidder is interested in hearing them. |

A few new picks!
7 Attachment(s)
I recently found a few new items for my collection. Here are 2 figure 8 vintage baseballs. I’m not sure of their age but I would think late 1800’s maybe early 1900’s. The one is alittle bit larger then a regular baseball about
3 1/8” across and the other is smaller than a regular baseball at 2 1/4” across. If anyone could help me out on these it would be much appreciated. The other find is a light-up store sign that could be hung or sat on a counter. I’m thinking maybe 50’s or 60’s. It goes great with my wall clock. Check out all my items at www.baseballfinds.com |
GEHRINGER Photo
I love the Rawlings clock and sign. Here's a Gehringer photo that I just picked up on ebay.

Plucked this one off Ebay last week, its a Christmas card from the 1949 Fort Worth team featuring a 20 year old HOF Dick Williams and Chico Carrasquel. 1949 was the first year in the States for the Venezuelan star shortstop.
|
Picked these up from Hunt's auction yesterday. Nothing special, but trying to accumulate enough 1800's football photos to create a decent web-page.
At 5x10, they are nice and large for such photos: |
Nice pick-up, Steve. I owned that piece at one time, did not know it was a X-Mas card.
|
Thanks Phil, I should've included an image of the inside of the card but it says "Fort Worth Baseball Club, inc. sends cordial good wishes for Christmas and the New Year."
Kinda neat, though I usually don't find myself buying anything other than Negro/Latin baseball material but I guess it has Carrasquel on it so that counts. :D |

Picked up these two Type 1 photos recently. The Carl Hubbell was a Baltimore Sun photo that was used on his 1939-46 Salutation Exhibit. The second is Bruce Edwards was a 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers Team Issue photo that was used on his 1950 Bowman baseball card. Thanks to Curt for the pickups!

Sorry I did write it in the title just not in the body of the post. Yes it's Killebrew's 500th.
I just looked on the PSA site to see how many had been graded. There are 10 Mantle 500th HR tickets graded and only 3 Killebrews. |
GREAT shot of Hubbell, Jason!

Thanks Keith for the bat! It does indeed have that unique look and feel for sure! Measure 38" inches long and is pictured above a "normal" game used bat. The bronze figural piece has some weight to it...over 9lbs!
|

I had tentatively planned a 'Johnson vs Jeffries' piece, which would have been a lot easier, but the Burns letter popped up last month. For anyone who's interested, the Ken Burns film about Johnson is on Netflix - it's over 3 hours long and contains lots of fight footage. Surprisingly clear stuff. |
B18 Blanket pillow top

First pick up I have posted. Pillow top made from 9 B-18 blankets. Got it in a lot with some vintage scorecards and a glove for $70 . I think that it was pretty good deal

Giants Yearbook
Picked up this 1952 Giants yearbook today at my local card shop. The yearbook features the 1951 season which includes the rookie year of Willie Mays and the famous "Shot Heard Around the World". It's in pretty good condition for the age. Photo is taken with it in a plastic protective sleeve so there is some glare.

Walter Johnson Memorial Dedication ticket stub
2 Attachment(s)
I just picked up a scarce ticket stub to the Dedication of the Walter Johnson Memorial at Washington in 1947.
The ticket is dated June 21, 1947 for a game between the St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators played at Griffith Stadium. Along with the teams and score written in vintage ink on the back, it is also written that it was the date of the dedication of the Walter Johnson memorial - a tribute to the Senators Hall of Fame pitcher who died the previous year. In addition, it states that President Harry Truman attended the game. The Nats won the game 5-4. |
1889 yale photo yearbook
5 Attachment(s)
I picked up a 1889 Yale yearbook in excellent condition considering that it's 124 years old. There are tons of pictures. There are several nice pictures of Amos Alonzo Stagg.
|
Congrats
Quote:
http://www.sportsantiques.com/StaggD...aleBBPhoto.htm Darn Mike you cleaned up...you got all that in a yearbook? That first one is Stagg and Jesse Chase Dann...They were the most famous duo in college baseball in the 1889 era...originally Dann was the pitcher...but they switched and Stagg became the pitcher and Dann the catcher....I did a story a few years ago on that photo you can read in the link above....That one of Stagg by himself is stunning...Congratulations that is one heck of a haul!..you don't fool around! |
Finally scanned this. I don't think I've ever posted it, but my apologies if I have. It came from Ted Williams' estate - from one of his many scrapbooks.
|
Love the Yale photos, they are great.

A couple more from the Yale yearbook
|
So this yearbook was stuffed with cabinet cards?
|
They had slotted pages with windows for viewing the cabinets images. You ordered them from Pach Brothers and could specify which cards besides the typical photos of every student that you wanted. Sometimes they are sports heavy and sometimes they are not, depends on the person who ordered it. Seems like he got a nice one!

Those are Beautiful cabinet cards. My only two pick-ups this month so far are these two photos. The first is an autographed 1947 shot of Cookie Lavagetto. It was taken the day after he spoiled Bill Bevins’ bid to throw the first no hitter in World Series history. I thought it ironic that Bevins’ 8 2/3 innings were not even mentioned in the slug. ( "The Cookie Game") The other is of the 1932 Cubs outfield.
|
Del Webb - great pics of Stagg - in baseball and football uniform.

Don't you love ebay auctions that are described/listed wrong. Bought these bats, the seller listed the Kaline as a model M110I, obviously it's a model M110L and matches factory records(shows light use). In the lot was a Steve Bilko. Also a Carl Furillo mode H4 listed at 34 inches but it actually measures 35 inches and matches factory records. The rest are players who only played acouple of seasons.
Furillo bat dates to 1955 |

Jim Maloney 2nd no-hitter celebration 4/30/69
4 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this terrific photo of Jim Maloney's 2nd no-hitter celebration vs. the Astros on 4/30/69 at Cincinnati.
On the following day, fellow double no-hit pitcher Don Wilson of the Houston Astros would return the favor by throwing a 4-0 no-hitter against the Reds. This is only one of three times that this has ever occured in ML history. This photo makes a nice compliment to my tickets to the Maloney/ Wilson back-to-back no-hitters. :) |
|
Scott, I remember very well how good it felt when Wilson no-hit them the next day. 1969 was a good year for the 'stros, despite things crumbling at the end.
Nice pick-up! |
1 Attachment(s)
Not valuable, but I think cool 1939 photo showing the Four Old Cat game scene orig from 1845
|
Quote:
On September 4, 1974, and what proved to be his last harrah before his untimely death, Don Wilson was replaced by a pinch hitter after pitching eight no-hit innings against Cincinnati at the Astrodome. Mike Cosgrove pitched the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to HOF Tony Perez for the only hit as the Reds won 2-1. What was it about Don Wilson and the Reds? -He pitched a no-hitter against them on 4-30-69 -He struck out 18 Reds in Cincinnati on 7/14/68 -He threw a 1-hitter with 16 K's on 9/10/68 -He threw a 1-hitter against the Reds on 9/17/71 at HOU Too weird! Let's just say that Don Wilson knew how to pitch to one very good Cincinnati Reds team.... |
Baltimore vs Philadelphia
5 Attachment(s)
Picked up this very fragile but beautiful scorecard from 09-23-1895 in which Baltimore won 12-4. The scorer miscounted a run in Baltimore's 8th scoring 3 in which they scored 4. A few notibles in this game.
Here also is a link at the LOC from The Sun(New York) of the boxscore. Interesting to see the style of score keeping then. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lc...24/ed-1/seq-4/ |
Fragile? its in pieces:) Saw those on Lelands tho. Cool history and w the cost of a complete program from that era, u prob did pretty well.
|
Not in pieces Scott, but while handling it, very small pieces from the edges fell off. The pages are separated, but the whole scorecard is there.
I am happy about this item. |
GREAT shot of the Babe, Ulidia!

Hey Scott,
Great stuff as always! What are those two small pieces with Maloney and Wilson head shots in ovals? Greg |

Great question! Actually, I have been asked that question before. I make those myself. They are actually high res color copies of B/W photos or postcards that I have in my collection. Once I make high quality copies of the image and scale it to the size I want, I use an oval template of cardboard that I created to get the oval shape. I use glue stick and apply it to a standard unlined 3 x 5 index card. When I store my no-hitter collection I have it in chronological order in 3 pocket binders. The tickets are in a ticket toploader with a second toploader behind it that has the 3 x 5 index card with the pitcher photo "oval" facing you and on the back side I have a signed 3 x 5 or GPC of the player if they are deceased. If the no-hit pitcher is living I have them sign the ticket. I find that this is a pretty solid way to display my collection so that I can enjoy it the most, FWIW... Over 120/184 of the different no-hit tickets are actually signed by the pitcher that threw the no-hitter. |
I was at the Maloney no-hitter, as an 8 year old kid. I still remember what a thrill that was, at Crosley Field. Sure wish I knew to save my ticket...
Great pickup, Scott! |

Nice pickups everyone. Love the Yale photos. Great score Brock on the Kaline bat.
Don't know why I bought this but I guess the uniqueness caught up with me. I was told it was from around 1910, South Portland Maine. It can't be any earlier than 1895. It came with two bats. One was a homemade bat with the players initials neatly carved in it. The second bat is the darker one and it's a Louisville Slugger with the name stamped instead of burned in. If you stacked it right you might be able to get nine bats inside or 3 bats, glove, cleats and jersey. |

I thought it was a great piece. If you want to sell the hillerich and son bat that came with let me know. Just picked this up in an antique store today. |
Thats a neat piece Clint.

Thanks Matt, I'll let you know if I decide to sell it.
Thanks Kenny, your Wheat collection is second to none. I'm always amazed at the rare and unique pieces you come up with of Zach. |
