Latest Pickups
2 Attachment(s)
I didn't see a thread for the latest pickups, so I thought I'd start a new one. I was excited to pick up this "new" N162 Sullivan to add to my Sullivan collection, so I thought I'd share some pictures.
|
Very nice David!
|
Nice looking card.
|
Thanks guys. This is one I had wanted for awhile, but waited for the right one.

Good idea!
In honor of the Dallas Cowboys [too soon? I can never tell], here are a couple of booze-related cards: 1951 Sugar Ray Robinson for vermouth PC http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ugar%20Ray.jpg 2012 Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko for beer: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Klitschkos.jpg For the non-drinkers--like me--Joe Louis Milk Co. premiums: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...remium%201.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...remium%202.jpg I don't know what the heck this is. Came from a set of at least 50, and appears to have been printed in 1928. About 10 x 10. I had to grab it since it was Benny Leonard: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20premium.jpg A semi-grail for me as it fills a giant chasm in my Benny Leonard collection. Only one I've seen but I assumed he had a PC for his restaurant since everyone else who boxed and ran a restaurant had one for theirs: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...urant%20PC.jpg |

Is this on card stock? I've come across one of these before - and wasn't sure what I was looking at. Thanks, Jeff |
Yes, on card stock

I picked up this poster related to the third Zale-Graziano fight. Thought it was really cool. A world away from an actual fight poster, but also a world away in price!

Nice card David. I used to own that exact one.

No kidding Arthur? Did you consign it to the auction I just won? Small world. There's a limited amount of boxing material, so sometimes we're bound to just sell it back and forth to each other I guess.:)
|
No, I sold it on ebay maybe 5-6 months ago. I really enjoyed it though, it's a great card.

This turned out to be a great piece - loaded with photos and commentary about the Johnson/Jeffries fight. There were two other issues that sold on ebay at the same time, but I lost out on them - one had a color supplement of Johnson, but it didn't look like him.

I started getting back into it lately - it's been a good week this week:

Surprisingly, she seems glad to be here.
|
Jerry, that's a very cool card. I've just discovered Mutoscope cards in the last year or so and would love to pick up a set one day.
I just picked up a boxing program from the first Zale-Graziano fight. I missed the auction for the second fight (I am a Graziano fan and would have loved to have gotten it) because "Rocky" wasn't in the title and that's how I did my search. Arghhh. But I love the cover of this program and am excited about getting it. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/9-27-46-TONY-...TDw~~60_57.JPG |
Tony Zale - Montiel

This was the first Tony Zale I have seen in a Montiel.

Not a new pickup per se, since I got it a few years ago, but had lost track of it until a few weeks ago, so I just had it graded and got back from PSA. Looks nicer than a 2, but minor creases and back staining make the grade correct.

Some Jim Jeffries material:
Ticket and raincheck from the Jeffries Barn boxing arena here in Burbank: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...n%20ticket.jpg An invitation and two tickets [front and back shown] to a 1941 dinner of the California Boxing Commission honoring Jeffries: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...g%20Dinner.jpg Business card of the manager of Jeffries Barn, G.W. Aiton. Interestingly, Aiton was a former MLB player. He played in 10 games for the 1912 St. Louis Browns: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...rd%20Aiton.jpg Two newly discovered Jeffries mail reply cards. I'd previously cataloged a card used to respond to mail about his 75th birthday: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ly%20cards.jpg Jeffries Barn letterhead signed by Aiton: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...letterhead.jpg And a vintage snapshot of Rocky Marciano at training camp: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...apshot%201.jpg PS: I now have one of the Jeffries 75th birthday mail reply cards available for sale or trade. Only the 2nd one I've seen. Minor back damage from scrapbook removal http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20birthday.jpg |
James Jeffries T218 Tolstoi
2 Attachment(s)
This beauty arrived today. Am glad to finally add him to my set after several missed opportunities over the years. I hope you can see in the picture that the back has a faint print outline (faded red/pink) that appears to mirror the front of image of the card. Notice that the left/right elbows are reversed. Is this likely a wet sheet transfer?
|
Yup, and a Tolstoi too. Very nice. Here's one of the other pose:

Boxing doesn't generally get a whole lot of my budget or attention, so it usually takes me a while to finish anything(even the small sets). Had the wrong "type" as a fill in for a while, but finally managed to pick up the matching type cheapie to finish this small set..:)

I know they seem a bit out of place, but here's a few modern wrestling pickups..

Wwe!
Nice brother!!!

Wrestling poster from Yakima Armory event, 1950. Al Szacz v. Gorgeous Gussie the 400 lbs. bear. Slim wrestling/baseball crossover.
One of the apocryphal stories of minor league baseball in central Washington featured longtime fiery PCL player/manager, Edo Vanni, who wrestled a bear in between games of a double header. He played for Yakima Bears in 1949, but the story has had many settings including Yakima, Wenatchee and even Salem Oregon. By all reports the bear won. Event sponsored by Sick's Brewing & Malting of Sick's Stadium and Seattle Pilots infamy. http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d065e86.jpg |
No posts in the last two months?!?!? That ain't right. Here's my latest, the California Grizzly Bear, Jas. J. Jeffries:

Been high on my wrestling want-list for a while. It's been a pain finding one that wasn't vastly overpriced. Was very happy with the price from the opcbaseball site that advertised in the BST...:D:D:D
Also fits into my Baseball collection as well. I've always had a soft spot for one time ballplayers who went on to be more famous post-career.. |

Nice Jack Johnson's.
Picked up this Nick Daviscourt signed 8X11. Daviscourt wrestled for the World Championship versus Ed "Strangler" Lewis (1921) & Jim Browning (1934), but lost both bouts. Daviscourt was a ruffian in the ring. According to The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels he exclaimed in The Ring magazine, "They want action. They cry for gore. Toss a man out of the ring; stand on his chest. Boot him as he is about to rise to his feet, stick your finger in his eye or clout him on the chin and you'll see how the customers will flock to see you the next time out." He fought under the names Nick Dewiscourt, Nick Daviscourt, Dick Daviscourt, & Nick De Court, but he was born Nicholas de Wiscourt in Ellensburg 1889. His many pseudonyms were out of necessity since he had been banned in many states for using "illegal tactics" including a closed fist/forearm blow to the chin known as the "Chawhammer". .... http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...ps491463e8.jpg Goes well with 1909 Ellensburg High School Baseball team photo (Daviscourt top row far right). Thanks Johnny..... http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...seballteam.jpg |

I was going to wait for somebody else to post before I put this up, but I got the scanner up and running and can't wait any longer. Got this from a member here at net54. The deal was sealed as we were both enduring the first onslaught of the polar vortex.
Definitely the pinnacle of my modest collection. |
Nice one, Peter. I used to own it!

lol
It's funny how these pieces make their way around the hobby. A great card, now with pedigree to boot!

Slowly working on the Boxers/Wrestlers of the N28 set. I got Sullivan in the spring and finally got around to grading him at the end of August. Definitely a good looking card, I just need to clean the fingerprints off the slab (or the scanner maybe).

Picked this up at the Chantilly, VA show a few weeks ago. It's an advertising piece for Royal Tailors and features Frank Gotch who was the first American to be the professional wrestling champion of the world in 1908. This was back when pro wrestling was a legitimate sport and key matchups used to fill up baseball stadiums with fans.

A recent auction win:
|
Quote:
I also just picked up this 'Ringside' RPPC that shows Gotch. Story on the Gotch/Roller Seattle fight that Gaffney officiated: Gotch put Roller in a 'bone-breaking hold...a perfectly fair hold, but it is devilish in its cruelty....those at the ringside could hear Ihe bones of the foot and ankle crush and snap. Eddie Gaffney, the referee on hands and knees near the wrestlers, could not stand it. "Let up a little, Gotch, you will break his leg." The champion eased the pressure, and with a tremendous kick with his free foot Roller got free, but he was beaten right there. That awful torture to which he was subjected took the sap out of him, and he jumped 'around the ring like a lame cock who had been gaffed'. |
Very nice Mayo!
I picked this up at the National in a trade. Only the 2nd one I'd ever seen. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ing%20slip.jpg There is no governmental entity called the "Betting Commissioners of New York"; it was really an illegal policy game based on the fight that happened to use this slip as the ticket. Ironically, there was one in the recent Heritage auction too. |

Picked up this Mickey Landis signed postcard. Has anybody ever heard of him?

Pretty obscure fighter. Looks like a Eastern Pennsylvania area clubfighter type.

Tommy Gibbons vaudeville ad.
|
Any idea where that vaudeville piece is from?
I already posted this in a different thread but WTF, I am so pleased to get it that I might as well do it here too! http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...m%20PC%201.jpg I have no idea what this is, other than it is old and came from a European seller: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20premium.JPG |
I'm guessing the Gibbons piece is from his 1924 trip to England, to fight Jack Bloomfield.
|
Quote:
Gibbons was from St. Paul, so doing an event at a venue across the river wouldn't have been unusual. While he didn't make much from the 1923 title fight with Jack Dempsey, he did pretty well with the vaudeville shows. |
Quote:
I stand corrected then. The Pathe News reference on top of all the European sounding supporting acts led me to believe it was UK based. |

Here is a little more info on Gibbons' show at the Pantages:
|

I guess the poster isn't necessarily from the Minneapolis location. It looks like Pantages had a pretty big circuit around this time. This is the schedule for a 1921 Pantages tour

Been working on a set of PCs from D & K Enterprises in SF, ca. 1905, relating to the Britt-Nelson bouts.
http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Publishing.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20Jeffries.JPG http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...06%20Britt.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...econds%201.JPG That last one made it to Belgium in 1905 and somehow survived and returned to the USA, where I own it 110 years later. Where will it be 110 years from now, I wonder? I am reasonably certain I will be sprinkled all around the Kona coast by then... Also had a fun snag with this Sharkey RPPC; signed on back: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...k%20signed.JPG |
Adam,
Amazing esoteric stuff - where do you get these and how are you able to build a collection around such a specific event? Very cool. Makes my T9 seem............well.................bland. Hey, when's the next soapbox entry? I always enjoy them. |

Those are nice, Shawn. I've got a group of those from both the Indiana Sport and Indiana Sport-Avion sets, including Joe Louis. They're from 1936, if you're curious.
