LAST DAY FOR BIDDING 2-2-13: Love of the Game Auctions
Hi, everyone, and Happy New Year!
I'd like to invite everyone to visit Love of the Game Auctions and check out our Winter, 2013 sale, which has been open for about half an hour now. We have a large selection of prewar baseball cards and memorabilia this time around, including the entire Rudy Strejc Collection of tobacco cards (including some great E98s and PCL cards), the beginnings of a large collection of T3 Turkey Reds, an E90-1 Joe Jackson, and an 1889 Hartley Studio cabinet of new Hall of Famer Hank O'Day. We've also got a gorgeous original painting of Nap Lajoie by noted artist Arthur K. Miller, a Sporting Life trade card from the 1886 Akron Acorns (one of the teams at the center of the baseball segregation debate), and a gorgeous 1907 Eastern League composite photo. Please visit our website and check out the auction - it closes on February 2! Thanks, and good luck! -Al |
Good Luck, Al! Great auction.

al
this second auction has been even more phenomenal than the first.
congrats, ole pal. all the best, barry |
some great stuff, good luck all.
|
Good luck Al. You have some great stuff in there.

WOW, the consignor for the '05 Frank Baker postcard just bought it on e-bay a few weeks ago for $265. Already over $1K now (with BP), totally rediculous......
|
Phil,
Yes that was a good buy and quick profit. Not sure what is ridiculous about it. |
Yeah, I think it is around a $500 piece, it went so low on e-bay because the seller listed it in the postcards - people section instead of sports. I think it is way too high this time around though.........
|
I was the high bidder on it until tonight. I log on and I am outbid by 500.:(

My guess is that it will end at the current price. I am currently the underbidder and don't think it is worth near that much but just really wanted the card and went well above my pre-determined maximum to try and get it but I'm done.

As a consignor I'm very disappointed in the results. Dealers are getting some cheap inventory. Al is a great guy, but I'm very unhappy with prices. Would have done better on Ebay or selling to dealers.
|
sorry to hear that...i'm very happy with my consignments. the auction seems to be getting a ton of action.

Some of my consignments are below what I paid, which is of course disappointing [but not unexpected, given my quixotic purchasing patterns]; however, others are selling for far more than I expected.
There is also a considerable savings in time to me in having Al auction items, rather than listing them myself on ebay. |
I think my consignments for both this auction and last auction are doing much better than ebay and without the fuss. Lots of late action on this auction. Sorry your items aren't doing well - must be a hit/miss thing, because a lot of what I'm watching is really strong.
|
Consigned in the first auction and was very happy. Thought he did a good job. Would consign again.
Cheers, John P.S. Great auction this time around. |

Yea I can already tell this is gonna be a late one
|
I have 5 lots consigned this time around with Al and am very pleased with the results on every one of them.
Another great auction! |
You are becoming very tired ...your eyelids are slowly getting heavier....you are ready to turn of your computer, crawl over to that warm bed and let your mind drift off......
|
Happy with my consignments, about 20-30% more than I could've gotten on ebay.
Not happy with a few things I wanted that are going much higher than I'd planned. |

+1
I can't find a deal on my losing list either. |
It's 3:00AM EST and still going. I'm winning one lot, but I don't know how much longer I can wait.
|
CLOSED.
Very happy with my consignments. |

Also, had a few placeholder bids but was outgunned in the end as a bidder. |
I got the Krapp beat out of me, but there's no Schmutz on my floor.
They didn't take my wallet though. |
I was an underbidder on the Matty E98. Considering the population of that card hasn't been blown apart by the Black Swamp Find, I didn't really think my bid was going to hold up. Matty has always been one of my collecting interests, because I live two hours from his hometown. I hope I don't regret bowing out of the bidding, though, considering blue background E98s were also completely unaffected by the Black Swamp find.
|
Great auction.Im disappointed to wake up to outbid notices.

Just like I figured, no one else bid on the Baker postcard after I stopped, probably would have sold for $500 minus one bidder (either the winner or myself).
On the consignment side, my one item did not receive a single bid and went unsold. Really not a good night for me other than getting to bed before midnight. |
Yea I gave up around 2 AM but always nice to wake up to a win

I was interested in the Baker to a point, but not at $1000.00+. If I remember correctly, one sold for around $400.00 on ebay not too long ago, I guess I should have gone after that one. Congrats to the winner though! Postcards are on FIRE lately, they don't fall under the radar anymore!

Lot 103
If anyone here won Lot #103 (Scratch, Ding & Dent collection of T206), I may be interested in taking a card or two off of your hands. Please contact me, if interested...thanks.

If anyone is using Ebay as a guage when determining market value on postcards your selling yourself short. To many times they are listed in the wrong category which keeps them hidden from so many collectors who otherwise would be active bidders. Couple that with the many who do not even use Ebay as a venue anymore because of their ever ending unfriendly changes we all seem to complain about here endlessly. Many deals can be found on Ebay such as this pc, you just gotta search. If you don't you'd better be prepared to pay up when they pop up in an auction for all to see.
|
I don't understand how it's "ridiculous" when a card reaches a certain price, when in fact it got to that level thanks in large part to the person making the "ridiculous" claim. I guess the other bidder was acting recklessly; the person complaining just really wanted the card.
|
Never said the final price was "ridiculous", just wasn't worth it to me to pay more than $500 for it. It was worth $1000.00 to someone, congrats on the great purchase, shows how strong the postcard market is becoming. I believe ebay sales to be somewhat accurate, some postcards sell very high and very rarely does one sneak through un-noticed. The whole "people don't bid because of bay fees" thing never factors in. When you want something, who cares about the fees.

Sorry but minor league team postcards picturing pre-rookie Hall of Famers routinely sell on e-bay in the $200 - $500 range, including Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Stan Coveleski, Dave Bancroft, Dazzy Vance and many others. I would put Frank Baker in a similar class as far as tier level Hall of Famer. I have picked up Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby (much higher level HOF'ers) on e-bay for $800 and $900 respectively. Therefore, the Baker postcard last night was not a good value, just a must-have for someone willing to pay "whatever it takes" to get it.

You're right, Tony. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it was missed by many (including myself) on e-bay because the seller listed it under Postcards - People rather than Postcards - Sports. Even so, I don't think that it would have topped $500. The writing on the front was also a detractor for me. I know that it pre-dates the divided-backs era and that's why but still would prefer a blank one to that one.
|
I won the T206 SLer lot of 13 cards & the Dahlen, BK...and my consignments did extremely well.
Congrats Al, can't wait for the next one. |
Great auction again Al, those Cycle460s went strong! Happy for the pickup but went quite a bit more then I was banking on.
|
Great auction Al. My consignment exceeded my hopes for where it would end up.

This was actually the first non-eBay auction I've ever bid on. Thanks to a certain card being in this auction (the T3 Tris Speaker) and the fact that Al C. was running the show, I registered and won four lots. This was the key card I was aiming for, and I couldn't be more pleased (my max bid was actually a bit higher than the winning bid, so from my limited experience LOTG is an auction house I can trust)...

Rudy Strejc Collection...
I had 85 lots, 83 of them sold! Some came in lower than expected, others way above. In the end, I'm very happy with the results and truly appreciate Al's expert handling of the collection.
My family is grateful to this community for the strong showing and we're happy that the collection is passed on to those of you who will cherish the cards as Rudy did. |
Great T3 Speaker congrats Chuck.

Gracias, Chris and John. Can't wait to see the Speaker in person. It should be easy to see past the wrinkles on a 100-yr old card. ;) All the best to y'all.
|
I was very happy to add two more 1911 Zeenuts (tough pose variation and a tough single), great auction Al!

I knew what the postcard was when I saw it, just from being a Thorpe fan. I was shocked to see it show up on eBay. In hindsight, my snipe was woefully insufficient. But i was kinda nervous about it being raw. I coudn't find anything about the postcard ever being reprinted, but I am cetainly not as knowledgeable as many of the other posters on here. I am a mostly a low-end collector, and I was gunshy about getting in too deep. The postcard did start at $199, but I wonder if the seller (a postcard dealer) really knew what he had. Seems hard to believe such a nice example would sell raw if the seller knew the rarity of what he had. |
Baker price did not surprise me, earliest card and extreme rarity, heck... kinda seems like a bargain for what it is.
|
Anyone care to fess up that they were the buyer or consignor of the Baker postcard?
|
I was neither for the record.

I also don't think ebay is the do all end all for judging prices. In most cases, postcards that sell on ebay are BELOW market value. This card is one that transcends just postcard collectors and branches into rookie HOF collectors and HOF collectors in general. Let me just say that there is a reason I went with Al. He knows his stuff, presents it well. It translates to good prices on those items that might need a little extra care and explanation. |
nice Jason...I agree!!!!
