Most beautiful t206 card
1 Attachment(s)
Like many others, I take the "aesthetic" beauty of the t206ers quite seriously. In fact, I only collect the ones I consider the most striking (based on color, image, and centering), even passing up good deals on others. I am always curious how others view this and how their picks might differ quite a bit from mine. So if you'd like to join in, vote for your 5 top picks in both portraits and non-portraits and I might even tally the results.
Note: Try to fight the tendency--influenced by fame or price or rarity--to name only the "usual suspects." For example, to cite just one example: Is, say, the Walter Johnson portrait really more striking than, for example, the common Bescher below? Or the Revelle? Anyway, make your own choices! But some surprise picks would be nice. Five portraits and five non-portraits. http://www.net54baseball.com/attachm...1&d=1357944001 |

Personally I think the Cobb (bat off) is the most beautiful card on Earth. I know I may be a little bias because I'm a Tigers fan .... but there is no other card in the set like it. The colors are amazing, the background is beautiful .... and the seriousness in his face is rather intimidating for being in such a serene setting.

That will be a popular choice, but in the same vein, and much under-appreciated, if not quite as great:

Glad to see Gandil and Rucker, two of my faces. Remember to vote for 5, not one.
|
The 2 I'm always drawn to are the Green Cobb and Johnson Portrait.

Hands down...My top 5

smart minds think alike....:)
|
Not trying to pick a fight, but for fun: If, say, Larry Doyle was the player on the Green Cobb and Hans Lobert was the Johnson portrait, would you still think they were the most beautiful?

Love the Cincinnati Cards! I just picked up a few graded in SGC holders for my Cincy set I am building. I will post some pics later this week.
I am with Greg...I collect based on the look of the cards and "eye appeal" and appreciate the cards for other reasons too. I agree, they are small pieces of art. The cards have too much allure for me not to appreciate them for what they have meant to card collecting and the history of baseball no matter who the player is or how much the card is worth...I am in my mid 30's and I played baseball most of my life, worked in baseball, and am a fan of baseball (Go Reds) and I get to go back in time and learn more about the state of the game in it's early stages when I collect these gems. One day I will get to share my collection with my son and have small pieces of history with a story to tell. What I appreciate the most is learning more about the history of the game, how the players played the game and how they contributed to the greatest game on the planet...each card tells a story and...the cards will also display well in my man cave. Happy Collecting! Hank |

Always liked the Dougherty portrait. Hard to believe it's the same guy when comparing the T206 and T205 cards.

Glad to see Lobert and Dougherty, two more of my faces. I have and like the pink Chase but from an aesthetic sense (I've done a lot of part-time magazine art directing in my time) it always bugs me that his head is too low on the card--too much space above. Maybe that's just me.
Mike Powers anyone? Shag? |

2 of my favorites
|
I have a hard time narrowing it down to five each, but today, here are my thoughts.
Ports: Rucker Lobert Dougherty Walsh Tinker Action: Cobb Bat Off Rucker Pitching Wheat Lajoie W/Bat Jordan Batting Best, Andy |
This is the only T206 I've kept because I think it's the best looking one.
http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Ite...a-copy_lg.jpeg Not my scan, mine is SGC. |
My favorite portrait is definitely the Walsh and I'm really into the Conroy fielding pose.
|
It's a toss up between these two port's for me. The red & black colors on the Tinker and olive & blue colors on the Walsh were great choices when produced.

Christy Leifield

There are so many great looking T206 cards. I will just throw in one of my personal favorites...I always thought that if this card had the face of Christy Mathewson (for example), it would be on the top of most people's wish lists. Sorry the image is so small...it deserves large scale.

Mike, I am especially with you on Burch Batting and Pattee. Just too tough to narrow it down. Best, ag |
There are some amazing images in this set. I have thought of this before if I was only allowed say 30-50 cards from the set which ones would I keep. Doubt I could choose just five. Below are some of my choices sorry for the hodgepodge images working from my laptop. Beautiful cards everyone.

Pattee

THAT'S SOME SERIOUS CARD PORN UP THERE JOHN!!
|
Wonka, your collection is amazing..
The coloration of your cards is awsome |
Yeah...I just made that my wallpaper, so thanks:).
|
Walter Johnson portrait. Followed by Matty dark cap. Way above the rest!
Edit: and ohh, WTF John, those cards are nothing short of amazing. |

Glad to see someone else loves Ellam. Actually image is me, age 9.
|
My favorite has always been the Cobb Bat Off.
|
Cy Young, portrait
The Cy Young portrait is very nice, also is the Lajoie w/bat.
Of the four Cobb's, the two non-portraits have better eye appeal. |
1 Attachment(s)
Not sure why, but the Cy Young Glove Showing has always been one of my favorites.
|

My top 5 would be
Hugh Duffy Harry Pattee Rube Waddell (pitching) George Davis (Chicago) Wid Conroy (with bat) Willie Keeler (with bat) is also a cool image with the clouds floating in the background, and the Cobb (bat off) is simply a work of art. Here's 4 from my top 5 (the Conroy is not mine - borrowed from a random image search) |
Wouldn't it be easier to list the ugly ones?:D

The Leifield pitching pose is by far my favorite. My t206's average VG but I searched out a mint condition Leifield years ago just because I like it so much. Only card I did that with
If I had to do a #2-5 for looks, I'd say Bell/hands above head Burch, batting Conroy, batting Donovan, throwing |
Leifield
I agree, just picked up another one yesterday:
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps4651ecab.jpg |
Leifield I'd call cool but not beautiful.
Never have quite gotten Pattee as top beauty. Others disagree. Love the Waddell throwing. No one else has mentioned Revelle? Pretty unique color scheme for t206. |

ABSOLUTELY no offense here ...... but what does everyone see in the Evers?
Every time I see this card I instantly think of a crackhead lookin' aids victim. Bob Cratchit :D I like the big stick and the cool stadium piece in the background but ........... |
Yeah, I agree on Ever, I own it--a Hindu even--but prefer the other variation (not to mention the portrait, one of the greats, and to my mind more striking than the green Young and green Cobb).
|
Two of my favorites:

It's kinda hard to post after Wonka :o:D Beautiful cards everyone !!! I love this thread.
I think I love the portraits the most, but there's not many in the set I don't like. Can't just pick 5 :) Here's a few of my favorites: (agreed on Burch batting-thanks Mike ;))- |
Quote:
... though I have to admit, Evers was a bubble pick for me. I really like the Merkle throwing (just posted), but have a really crappy example that I didn't want to post. |
This is one of the first two T206s that I got 30+ years ago. I may be sentimental, but I still think it is the best looking card in the set, though with some close runner-ups. This one really captures the era for me.
JimB http://photos.imageevent.com/jimblum...0PSA%203.5.jpg |
I have always been partial to the Cobb bat on over the bat off. Other favorites would be,
Cobb Red Port Matty Dark Cap Lennox Herzog Lajoie Port Hannifan Milan Joss Pitching And, awesone cards John!! |
|
The most beautiful T206 is the one fresh out of the mailer in my hands for the very first time.:)
|
t206.....
I'm BLIND!!!!:D
|
My vote is the WaJo portrait. I like the Cobb Bat Off but I think he looks more like a gremlin than Ty Cobb on that card.
|
No votes for Schulte-- front view nor back view?
None for Lundgren (Chicago)? Nearly as great as any. |

Great choices so far...can't say I really disagree with any of them.
Waz...Fielder looks like he is pouting ;) This card is one of my favorites because it looks like Harry is admiring his ball clear the fence...whatta swing! (card is from eBay) |

Chris, you know most of our weaknesses here on the board....your display of back runs! Simply beautiful! You've created art with your displays!
