The ONE card you want.....that you can afford....
Hope this thread is ok, Leon.
What is the ONE card that you really really want for your collection......that you can afford? If the '52 Mantle or t206 Plank is in your budget, then by all means congrats....but it's not in mine! :) I would really really love to have an e98 Cobb. Haven't had a Cobb in my collection in a few years, and it is the last of the "expensive" cards I need for the set. There are a couple of overpriced ones on eBay, and I'm not about to pull the plug So what is yours? Doesn't have to be expensive. Just a card that "NEEDS" to be in your collection. :) Jimi |

should be able to afford one, if it comes around again - hopefully this year:
1923 Zeenut P. Waner |
Not vintage, but i have been looking for this forever. In 1996, Marshall University won it's second D1AA championship. Someone, though who is shaky, issued a phone card of the two quarterbacks from those teams, Michael Payton, who went to camp with the Cowboys and Eric Kresser who played briefly for the Bengals. I have seen only one, which was on ebay years ago.
Along with my Monster obsession, I have a very comprehensive Marshall University collection...but that one has evaded me. In fact, I have never found another collector or Herd fan who even remembers it. |
e97 nichols phil variation!!!
|
1955 Topps Hocus Focus Jackie Robinson.
and if I were to sell part of my collection - 1914 CJ Joe Jackson |
This is an excellent thread! I always wanted a t206 Cobb card, I just never seemed to pull the trigger on one....
|
T206 Green Cobb, just wating for the right PSA 5 at the right price.
|
Probably a T206 Magie.... It is in my budget but i wait a little bit...
|
I'd like to re-acquire a 1951 Bowman Ted Williams in the VG range at some point. Also would like to get a 1952 Bowman Feller in the VG range, as I am now collecting 1952 Bowman (have 61 so far...)
|
My Big Card
I want a Boston Store Joe Jackson. Somehow I missed the one that sold in SCP Auctions 3 years ago. I would like one in a SGC/PSA 2-3 range. I'll just be patient, and I'm sure one will come up for sale at some point. I enjoy the hunt in the meantime.
Tony |
T206 Piedmont 350-460 Factory 42 back. I've been hoping to luck into one not noted in the ebay auction description, but I might just have to bite the bullet and ante up...
|
NM......
Original post removed because I misread the title.....
|
Simply a t206 Cobb, bat off, PSA or SGC 2 or 3, well-centered--if you have one, let me know!
|
Vg vg
|
1934 Goudey Gehrig. Either one.
|
a nice PSA/SGC 3
1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb. Been a dream card for many years now i can afford it just have to hope Mr. Cobb shows up :D
|
NM. Also misread the title.
|
Cy Blanton from the Diamond Stars series. My great-grandfather's name was Blanton, and everyone called him Cy after the baseball player. I've wanted the card forever, and never seemed to get around to it.
|
One day I would like to get a clean green Cobb.
Here is the first error I "discovered" and was the underbidder on....it is now in the collection of a good friend and one day I will pull the trigger and make the trade. :D http://i.imgur.com/iIjGM.jpg |
First and foremost...a T205 Hoblitzell no stats in poor-fair condition.
Next is a '58 Kahn's Wally Post in p-vg condition or a JJK Copyart Ennis in any condition. Just a few things I just cant seem to find but know they are out there. Joshua |
a tolerable t206 O'Hara St Louis with a price tag less than what I spent on my Green Cobb.
|
Looking for a 1925 Exhibit Lou Gehrig in around VG condition, really hope one pop up for sale this year.
|
Ever since I accidentally got a good deal on a Medwick Gold Medal Foods card two years ago I have wanted to continue building the set. I have been the underbidder on several of them over those two years, and could have gone higher for most, but I have a strict price range in mind, and alas, my range has not reflected the market range. Long story short, Medwick remains my one and only R313-A, even as the set remains my top pre-war set to work toward.

A full box of darby choclates oh well:d

Always looking for Detroit OJ's that I need for my collection. Joe |
Easily....
a T212-1 Gandil. One of the last few cards I need to complete the 1909 Obak set.
Lee |
Easy...
The "unicorn" of the last decade+ for me....
The 1939 Goudey Premiums R303-A Ted Williams Rookie card Dave |
It's not a card, but I would like to get a Babe Ruth signed ball some day, that is reasonably legible (not shellacked), and not too expensive.
|
Two years ago, i played hardball negotiating for a 1933 Goudey #160 Lou Gehrig SGC 88. I got beaned.
Still looking for an SGC 84 or better. I would gladly overpay now, but don't tell anyone. :D:D:D |
I would like to find a 1920 W519 Babe Ruth graded VG up to EX. I had one 10 years ago but follishly sold it. I will continue looking until I find one.
|
|
T210 Stengel or a A.W.H Caramel Guy Titman.
|
There's several but tops is probably a t206 Lundgren (Chicago); can't finish the Cub subset without him. If he was a HOFer or it was a rare/odd card it wouldn't be an issue. I just have a lot of angst spending that kind of money for a common with no particular story behind it.......unless I'm missing something.
|
hmmmmm
Chase Holding Trophy Black Lenox and
Schlei Portrait Uzit All PD 42's I don't have !!! |
ok I confess
W600 Cobb
I have been the bridesmaid too many times |
W600 Milan (if one even exists--he isn't in the OC gallery)
If that doesn't exist, then either a Washington Times or M101-6 of Milan Bill |
1913 Zeenut Orval Overall
I've never even seen one for sale, but I can now say I've at least seen a picture of the card. I suspect I will eventually find one, just not in the near future. |

Ex NM 1953 Topps Feller. The artwork is great.
|
1907 Tigers FP Burke PC - been my screen saver for months, cant find one. A CJ Cobb, wags or rickey would work as well.
|
1959 Bazooka ken Boyer
|
Interesting topic.
I can't afford ANY cards, but I keep buying them. So, of the unaffordable cards that I would buy anyway, if it was available and I could get hold of the cash... A '2 name' T206 with Plank or Wagner at the top. I say 'affordable', because I think I would value it more highly than most other bidders. But I might be wrong. |
Batter-Up premium Foxx
|
An Old Judge Kid Madden/leaning on rock pose. Very affordable card since he's a common, but an almost impossible pose of him. Every time I see a Madden in an auction/ebay it's always disappointment...11 years ago I passed on one because the price was too good, long story, long dumb story
|
An EX condition T3 Turkey Red Tris Speaker.
And, like Scott, I really can't afford any cards for, ummmm... the next year. :) |
For a couple of years now I have really wanted to get my hands on a really bitchin T205 Joss, but it is tough to find really nice ones it seems ... at least it is tough for the likes of me

Derek, there's a 1.5 t205 Joss in the first Joe's Vintage auction, just posted today... maybe you want better grade but, as the say, "affordable"
|
Thank you Greg, I appreciate the heads up. What I am really looking for is an example with sharp corners and all of the gold intact. A high end example, so to speak. I just do not see them very often. There will come a day! Thank you again for the heads up.

Here's what I want. It sold at a Heritage auction in 2004.
Does anyone know who has it?? |
For me:

Rose PC of Hal Chase. I'd murder someone for it at this point. Or pay a lot of money. Either one.
|
For the last 9 years I've been looking for a Willard's Chocolate Collins. I have the Ruth and Cobb but can't find the Collins.
|
Easy. 1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb. I wouldn't murder anyone (yet) but it may come to that.
|
Like this one?

Do you have the Ruth and Cobb? |

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/4581633232/" title="1924 Willard's Chocolates Sports Champions V122 by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4057/4581633232_da19842e24_b.jpg" width="460" height="753" alt="1924 Willard's Chocolates Sports Champions V122"></a> I bought all three as a set...can't remember where...some auction. The Collins comes up on occasion, it's not rare, just not very common. Just checked -- there are 27 graded by PSA and SGC combined. |
Thanks for posting the cards.
Merrill |
A presentable T227 Baker to finish the baseball portion of the set.

Plus a card like that will most likely be spending most of its time in a bank vault.:) |

Lower Grades Make Them "affordable" For Me!
I would love to buy any of the following 6 E98s. Each card in a lower grade is certainly acceptable by me and it is what makes them "affordable".
Cobb in a Red or Orange Background Young in a Red or Green Background Brown in a Red Background Dahlen in a Blue Background I'm hoping to somehow swing purchasing all 6 of these in 2013 to complete the Master Set....if I can find them in "affordable for me" condition. Neat Thread! |
As affordable cards go, I'd like a 1952 Globe Printing Padres card of Al Richter.
|
Wagner- Max Stein Postcard, or Rose Postcard.
