Your Best Pickup of 2012
It's that time of year...show off your best pickup of the year.
For me it was without a doubt the Max Towle Photo album. Max played for the Nebraska Indians, and was also the quarterback for the 1915 Nebraska Cornhuskers which made the album even better for me. He was also good friends with Les Mann so there were quite a few photos with a major leaguer as well. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01963.jpg Some tough looking Nebraska Indian players wearing their caps at the train station http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01965.jpg A team shot that I'd not seen before http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01966.jpg Max also played for the Husker baseball team http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01967.jpg Some Husker football shots http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01968.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01969.jpg Hanging out with Les Mann (In his Springfield College lettermen's sweater) and "Doc" (haven't researched this fellow yet) in Kalispell, Montana http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01970.jpg More shots of the Nebraska Indians http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01971.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01972.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01973.jpg A shot of Buck Beltzer with his family - Beltzer was team owner and manager of the Nebraska Indians at that time http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01974.jpg 1918 Naval Aviation (Seattle) Football team...lots of former collegians on this team http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01976.jpg A Lincoln company team (I believe Laundry company) http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01975.jpg A couple semi-pro teams that Towle played with http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01977.jpg A three legged race at the ball park http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...m/DSC01978.jpg |

I think Dan's album may be my favorite of other people's pick-ups.
I have four that are pretty much tied, but this is a good one: 1869 Kesauge cdv/cabinets |
Wow!! Those are awesome Scott!
|
Thanks, Dan.
I love photo albums. If I had picked up the Matty McIntyre album before John Rogers parted it out, I probably would have just stopped collecting at that point :) |

I know it's modern baseball, but a Miguel Montero game used bat from 2011. Photo matched it to being used to hit 3 homeruns. I had other good pickups but i sold them, but this bat is one of my favorites.

Original Type 1 Horner photo Ed Reulbach
My most recent pickup is my best pickup this year. (Please refrain from lipsticking this one Scott) It is a Horner photo of Ed Reulbach and
was used on several of his cards like Colgan's Chips, T204 Ramly and Fan Craze to name a few. The reverse has the Horner-Jordan stamp. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=8427 |

Sorry, but I don't know how to take an auction lot pic and make it appear in a Net 54 thread. Happy collecting to all in 2013, Val |
Val,
Just type No spaces. The link to your image is: http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Ite...52015a_lg.jpeg So you would type: [IMG] h ttp://ww w.legendaryauctions.com/ ItemImages/000152/ 152015a_lg.jpeg [/IMG] without spaces to get: http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Ite...52015a_lg.jpeg The image will stay up in Net54 as long as it remains in its original location. It will also appear the same size here as it did in its original location. |

2012 was a good collecting year for me. I added A LOT of pinbacks to my collections with many thanks to my friends here particularly Adam (Tigerden) who sold me his Detroit Tigers collection, Al, and Andy.
But if I have to choose the most important single addition it would be this 1906 White Sox Championship mirror. These have terrific eye appeal and offer some historical significance. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...0/IMG_2393.jpg This large pitcher sculpture believed to be Walter Johnson would be a close second. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...0/IMG_2285.jpg |

2012 Favorite Memorabilia pickup(s)
7 Attachment(s)
Boy, congrats to all of you. Those are some terrific pickups! This is one of my favorite threads of the year.
I literally picked up these two items last week, yet they certainly are my favorites of 2012. They came directly from the 1974 California Angels ballboy Paul Hirsch. Perfect provenance makes these two items my favorites. They originated from arguably one of Nolan's best years-1974. In 1974 Nolan struck out 19 batters 3 times, threw a 1-hitter, his third career no-hitter and fanned 367 batters for the season. Quite a year! 1) The game ball is from Nolan's 15th K in his AL record breaking 19th K game (9 innings) on August 12, 1974 at Anaheim. He passed Bob Feller who previously had struck out 18 in 1938. 2) Nolan's 1974 Angels locker tag from the Angel's clubhouse. Accompanying photo is of Nolan w/ ballboy Paul Hirsch in the Angels clubhouse in 1974. If you look carefully you can see other locker tags above the lockers in the background which helps provide a photo match... |

Brennan's best and last year with Philadelphia was 1913 and that appears to match his uniform style too. It was probably played in Humboldt as they played there in 1912 for sure. The Senators started using this style uniform in 1912. There's another photo like this only bigger out there and it states Allen County ball players. Brennan was from La Harpe and Johnson from Humboldt. Both of which are in Allen County. I've never seen a picture or any information of a game being played in La Harpe. That's why I figure Humboldt. |
Street Light Sign that was used on Market Street in St. Louis welcoming visitors to the 1967 World Series. Now looking for a photo/newspaper article, etc, that shows it in use.

1912 Redland Field Dedication Panoramic Photo

Great stuff guys!
As you can see, this photo dates from May 18th, 1912. The frame and glass are original. The image measures: 32" x 12". This picture hung in a Cincinnati bar for many years. It goes nicely with my 9" x 12" Redland Field Dedication Program with the same date. Happy Holidays! |
Baseball-wise, I collect Yankees images from the 1920s and 1930s. I had a very productive year (next year will be less so).
These are probably my two favourite pick-ups of this year and for very different reasons. One is the Yankees' squad pictured at Boston in April 1924 (presumably one of their first images as World Champions) and the other is of Joe DiMaggio in 1938. http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps5e78620f.jpg http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a...psad5c1aab.jpg |

The DiMaggio photo wasn't expensive but case of right time, right place Love the image and have always had an interest in DiMaggio as he's probably the closest thing to a baseball icon I've had. I've done well with both Gehrig and DiMaggio images this year. |

2012 - a very good year
Great pick ups everyone!
I had a number of very nice pick ups this year, but my favorite piece of non autographed memorabilia is this photo from Gehrig's wake. It is not the most expensive, or most valuable item, I was able to get this year, but is absolutely the most moving. As was discussed in a thread earlier this year, I think it is such a poignant picture, that truly expresses the special connection Gehrig had with kids and fans. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...kewithkids.jpg I hope everyone has a Great Christmas, New Year, Chanukah, and all the holidays celebrated this time of year I wish you all a very healthy and prosperous 2013. Best, Mark |
Scott:
Thanks, diameter of the Cleveland pinback is 1 1/2". |
It's always fun when your research pays off.
I purchased this 1890 scorecard at an antique show. It turns out to be from career victory #6 for the Cleveland rookie brought up to the majors just six weeks earlier - Cy Young. http://s915.photobucket.com/albums/a...UNGPROGRAM.jpg |
Lance, many thanks for adding the pic of the 1924 Senators photo I acquired and for educating me so that I can do this myself in the future. I'm one of those old folks who isn't very skilled computerwise.
Scott, many thanks for the compliment. Best wishes collectingwise and otherwise to all for 2013. Val |

Eagles uniform
Tough to pick my favorite 2012 pickup, but after some pondering, it would have be picking up a couple of pieces to complete my 1969-1972 Philadelphia Eagles game used uniform. I have had the pants for several years - they date to 1971-72. I picked up the circa 1969-70 Tom Woodeshick helmet with the help of Carlton's last Chicago national writeup. After seeing his photos last year, I spotted the helmet in the case of one of the dealers. Carlton helped me by identifying the dealer, and after some phone calls, I was able to land a helmet that I had been after for a while. Then later in 2012 I was able to convince a fellow collector to part with his circa 1970 Gary Ballman Philadelphia Eagles white jersey with several team repairs. I had the jersey authenticated by Mears after I received it, and was thrilled to complete the ensemble. The socks and cleats aren't Eagles worn, but found a pair of unworn Spotbilt cleats that most Eagles players of that era wore to try to make the mannequin display as accurate as possible.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n.../EaglesUni.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...EaglesUni2.jpg |
Nice game worn display! Really impressive. Might I suggest some eye black on the mannequin's face?
|

Eye black is a very good idea- thanks. Will give the mannequin's face a tougher look.

I think it will take more than eye black to make the mannequin look tougher. It appears to have a female appearance. Jerry |
Mannequin
Thanks Jerry.
And yes, I was being sort of sarcastic about the mannequin becoming tougher. It is a male mannequin, and quite tall at about 6'5", but unfortunately almost all mannequins come with a mascara'd look to their eyes. Thats what gives that feminine appearance. The eye black will help, but not dramatically. |
You are a true collector to have one of those KJ!
|
Thanks James - Thankfully I have a very understanding wife, in letting me have 7 mannequins in my Eagles room! I am sure it it would be an issue if I tried to invade our main floor with my collection, but she pretty much lets me run amuck in my finished basement :)
Only 2 of the mannequins are full body mannequins - the others are just torso mannequins, but all of them are fitted with shoulder pads. |
Buy a rubber mask for that mannequin.
This one would look pretty good: http://www.rubbergorilla.co.uk/IMAGE...guy%20mask.jpg |

Egads!
Guys
I don't collect much memorabilia...and because of that I don't click on this side of the board too often. This Thread is like a "Greatest Hits" record and I cannot get over how many nice items are here! Egads I couldn't pick even 10 favorites without fear of leaving off many great pieces. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year! (OK- Adam's restored exhibit machine and Scott's CDV may be my favorites, although the Lou Gehrig photo lying in state is pretty unforgettable) |
Reach Advertising Sign

My favorite pickup this last year is this cardboard Reach sign. It measures a whopping 16" x 20". I haven't located anything that has sold that is this large, nor have I found this exact sign. Guessing it might date to the 1920's. It is framed in plexiglass which I have been afraid to take it out of. Sorry for the glare. Mike

Best Pick Ups: Gloves
6 Attachment(s)
Like most, its far too challenging to simply pick out "The One" best pick up of 2012...truth be told, I would have to say its our new baby daughter.
Anyway, like the Academy Awards, we broke down our picks by genre....here are our best in the the vintage gloves and mitts catagory: 1. Circa 1890's webless crescent fielder's glove. 2. Circa 1900 W&D crescent padded fielder's glove. 3. Circa 1900 Reach crescent padded fielder's glove. Now hang on...there's three more on the way. www.dugouttreasures.com |

1. Circa 1880's JF Draper advertising envelope featuring Irwin style base ball gloves and mittens. 2. Circa 1850's/1860's baseball/firemen's parade belt...alot of research confirms that these types of belts were used equally by both. 3.
