Raging jealousy!
As always, Phil, I'm very jealous of your RC collection. Nice group! I haven't owned an OJ in about 8 years when I owned a Ward. I think I got the SGC 10 back then for around $80. Ugh.....

Love the Ed Delehanty! Too bad he got pushed off that train (as the story goes). Great old cards.
|
Train
Yes, not only did he supposedly jump off that bridge into the Niagra Falls, but he's famous also for a pretty "shameful" home run:
Delahanty was also the victim behind one of "The Most Shameful Home Runs of All Time" according to the third edition of Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo's series, "The Baseball Hall of Shame." In July 1892, when Delahanty's Phillies hosted Cap Anson's Chicago White Stockings at Philadelphia's Huntingdon Street Grounds (aka National League Park), Anson hit a fly ball to center in the top of the eighth inning. The ball hit a pole and landed right in the "doghouse," a feature unbeknownst to everyone then until that moment; it was used to store numbers for the manually run scoreboard. Delahanty tried to get the ball (it was still in play) by first reaching over the doghouse, then crawling down into it, but on the latter attempt, he got stuck, and by the time teammate Sam Thompson had freed Delahanty from the area, Anson crossed home plate on what the "Baseball Hall of Shame" book calls an "inside-the-doghouse home run." Yikes! Jimi |

I had to sell my favorite last year shortly after getting it. After we had some money back in the bank, my wife said "you should try buying it back". What a supportive wife, but it was long gone.
Now I am left with this lone example from the Old Judge set. Though, I believe this copy is from 1889 (not 1887). http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/...arkins_GD2.jpg |

This thread made me pull out "The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890, Old Judge's baseball cards" (Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski and Richard Masson) last night and read through it some more.
My 2 year daughter saw me reading it and said "Bible?" (We read the Bible most nights before bed). I explained, no, it was baseball cards, she got up in my lap and looked through it with me flipping the pages. Bonding with my 2 year old daughter over Old Judge baseball cards :D |
|
Dave, did you buy that low-grade one off me about 11 years ago? I bought a lot of three low grade cards to get a Corcoran and a Hogan like that was in the group. Thought I sold it to someone with the same last name

Even Authentic, OJ's can look great if the picture is nice. On the other hand, pink tint ones never look good but for some subjects, you have to settle for them

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/u...scan0015-1.jpg You've got some nice cards, John. As does everyone else, great stuff! |
Thanks Matt. That barely qualifies as a pink tint :) Most don't have pictures that nice. I think I have about three of them total, that's enough for me. I'll get a chance to scan some more OJ's on Monday, so this thread will live at least another three days. For now, here is an article I wrote back in April, using my Old Judge cards to help tell the story

I think this is a decent pink tint one too.

Does anyone know how many different colors OJs were made? I had a nice gray one that I sold, I wish I didn't. I know there are purple ones too,,, different shades of brown. Sepia too, of course, what else is there?
Nice card Bruce and Kenny. |

Great thread!, lots on eye candy. Here is one of my favorite players, Lady Baldwin. Would love to eventually find the 1st & 5th pose. I've also included the errant Kid Baldwin pose w/ Detroit (should be shown as Cincy catcher, not Detroit pitcher).

I know these weren't made during 1887, but several of the pics are from the 1887 year. So hopefully it's ok that I post them.

Before posting any individual scans, I figured why not save myself some time. I call this pile of mess "Trying to alphabetize 345 Old Judge cards that were in almost no particular order before". It's a pretty long title and probably too descriptive.

Very nice Kevin!, Orator Shafer would be my fav of the bunch. Amazing group of cards.

Look at Mike Griffin. He thinks he's cool with his arms crossed.
Seriously though, the Cupid Childs and Lave Cross are Kewl. All of those cards actually, nice stuff Kevin! |
I'd like to see a Griffin w/bat, the pose I didn't believe existed until I saw it in the OJ book. It's never been up for sale in the last 12+ years that I know of...anyone got it? It's actually pictured in the Fritsch reprint set too
|
Joe, that's my favorite Deacon White pose - awesome!

Some smashing OJ's in there. A Deacon White. Cool Griffin card. And look at that Jim McCormick, for gosh sakes!
