I'm someone there have been some pick-ups this month, now let's see them!

I'll start us off with a 1941 Play Ball Pee Wee Reese signed rookie. I believe there are very few of them, I have only seen one other in a private collection, so I had to have it, plus I love the '41 PB set

Just got these back from an Aaron Hill signing. Full season tickets from each of his Cycles in 2012 and the ball he hit for a homerun in his 2nd cycle.

Thanks, I like your Pee Wee signed rookie. I had thought of collecting signed rookies before but there seems to be a lot of people doing it. I am a blue collar guy so I went after ticket collecting years ago since not many people were involved. Seems to be picking up now.

Just recently picked this very, very nice upgrade up from a fellow board member, thank you so much again Earl. Absolutely love this set.

Nice items, especially the ball. Did you catch it at the game? Hill is a class act. Too bad we lost him as a Jay, but he was just too hot and cold with us.

I don't know what it is about this card, but I just had to have it. I love the way the signature looks against the yellow. And its a nice vintage Hank.

From his IBHOF biography:

"Born November 26, 1873 in Dundalk, Ireland. As a youth, he ran away from home and went to sea as a cabin boy. Sharkey arrived in New York in 1892 where he joined the U.S. Navy. Quickly promoted to "master-at-arms" he was deployed to Hawaii where he began his pro career with 20 consecutive knockouts.

In 1896 he met his first stern challenge when he went the distance with Hall of Famer Joe Choynski and claimed victory after 8 rough rounds. World heavyweight champion James J. Corbett witnessed the bout and challenged Sharkey, confident his boxing ability would be too much for the young Irishmen. The 4-round bout was declared a draw due to police interference, but spectators had no doubt that Sharkey had bested the champion. Sharkey next engaged his idol, John L. Sullivan, in a 3-round exhibition bout before defeating future heavyweight king Bob Fitzsimmons via a controversial 8th round foul (Referee Wyatt Earp ruled that a right hand that felled Sharkey for the 10-count was a low blow). In 1898 he lost a close decision to future champion James J. Jeffries, topped Gus Ruhlin in one round and defeated Corbett via 9th round foul.


A 10th round stoppage over Kid McCoy set up an 1899 world heavyweight title contest with Jeffries at Coney Island. After 25 furious rounds, Jeffries was declared the winner by referee George Siler in a disputed decision. Sharkey continued to box, stopping Joe Goddard and Choynski before losing back to back bouts to Ruhlin and Fitzsimmons. He retired from the ring in 1904 with a record of 40-6-3ND (37KOs).


Although never a champion, the barrel-chested slugger is regarded as a ring immortal of his era. In retirement he toured with Jeffries in vaudeville shows. He died on April 17, 1953 in San Francisco."

Chris, I bought the ball directly from the kid that caught it. I also got his ticket from the TGI Fridays HR Porch where it bounced into plus there was a great video of him catching it. I made him send me photos of him wearing the same clothes, plus he signed a notarized statement, so other than catching it yourself I think he passed the burden of proof. I sent the documents along with the ball to be signed so Aaron could see it was legit. I guess it passed because he signed it the way he did.

I remember him with the Jays and he was always a solid player.

picked up this neat Bill Veeck Cut from Jim Stinson earlier this week... Got it back from my framer today...

The picture tells it all! Ned Garver & fellow Browns teamates present owner Bill Veeck with a Silver Cup for firing Rogers Hornsby as manager in 1952...

The trophy read: " For the greatest play since the Emancipation Proclamation"

Pretty psyched to have gotten this one... My dad picked it up at an estate sale in Medfield Mass which turned out the be the house of James Kerasiotes who was the former Secretaty of Transportation in Massachusetts

He was responsible for the renaming of Rte 9 in Massachusetts to the Ted Williams Highway and Tunnell...

Measures 2' x 2' and is going to make a great display piece once framed and matted with a Teddy Ball Game Auto...

Awesome eBay Vander Meer purchase!
 

I just picked up a terrific unique item for my Johnny Vander Meer collection for under $15- delivered!

Here is an original signed 8" x 11" photo of Vandy's entire March 1944 Basic Training graduating class. The photo is also signed on the front and back by every one of the 85 men from Company 347 (Sampson, NY).

Also accompanying the photo is an original letter from the wife of one of Vandy's basic training company mates, Anthony Leonovich. She discusses how proud her husband was to have graduated with "Johnny Vander Meer- the guy that threw 2 no-hitters in succession".

Vander Meer is pictured 4th from the bottom right and signed the photo directly below his photo. Anthony Leonovich is the 6th guy to the right at top left.

Pretty cool!

This photo of former bantamweight champ Alphonse Halimi is inscribed on the back and references his trip to Los Angeles in 1960 where he lost his bid to recapture the title. I had to send to France to get a Los Angeles-related piece!

have participated in a few private signings recently. been a hit or miss, like one guy losing both of my bench cards after the signing and refusing to make good on it. today got back this beautiful yaz rookie cards. so pretty!

One of the benefits of (formerly) working for a public utility in MA was that I had access to many addresses and phone numbers...I got Yaz's address...sent him a card with an sase and got it back within 4 days....awesome!

Pretty sure that is illegal. You can't solicit customers on behalf of the company (which you didn't do) and I believe you cannot use information from your company that isn't public record for personal gains (I believe they make you sign an NDA). But thats just me being jealous :)

Not exactly an autograph but I picked up this photo of The Babe last night. I love it. He's signing bats while in the military for other soldiers stationed around the country. The tags on the bats have the names of different bases on them.

The best part about the photo though is that it was taken on July 22, 1926. Exactly 59 years to the day before I was born.

Beginning in 1924 Babe Ruth served three years in the New York National Guard.

Here's my big score for the month. It's a 1930's autograph album, 200+signatures, over 20 Hall of Famers, 99% of them signed in black steel tipped fountain pen. Beautifully bold Lou Gehrig. I will enjoy going through the couple hundred names and seeing if there are any really tough non HOFer's in there. Here's a few scans.

"Death Valley" Scott
 

I finally was able to add a terrific vintage fountain pen cut of Death Valley Jim Scott of the Chicago White Sox to my collection of no-hit pitchers. On May 14, 1914 Scott threw 9 innings of no-hit ball against the hometown Washington Senators before giving up a hit in the 10th inning.

Death Valley Scott is a very elusive non-HOF signature which has been a tough name to find. His death date of 1957 and the fact that he spent much of his post baseball career off the grid are both factors in his signature being a tough one to locate.

Many thanks to a close hobby friend and fellow net54 board member Howard Singer for helping provide a world class assist. For those of you that don't know Howard, he has been one of the largest collectors of all things Chicago White Sox and he is truly one of the nicest guys in the hobby. Thanks Howard!

Wow that is an awesome score for the month! Awesome Delancey who is a toughie for sure. I'd love to see some other scans as I think these old auto albums are fantastic. Do you have a website? Congrats on the find.

Thanks, I had been trying to get this autograph album for a couple months and am having a great time with it so far. It's not really bound any more so the pages are removable, so I plan to sell some and recoup part of the cost. I am going to work on getting the other pages scanned in soon, and if people don't mind, I would love to show them and see if anyone else spots some toughies. I have about 95 percent of the ID'd but admittidely I don't know a lot of the obscure, potentially rare names.

Picked up this Pepper Martin single signed baseball this weekend. The ball is a Branch Rickey Rawlings Official League Ball. I've never seen that ball before.

Picked up a 1958 Pirates/Columbus Jets exhibition game scorecard signed by Roberto Clemente and others.

Great looking early Clemente signature. Had a hard time with the signature at first, until I saw other examples from 1958 and earlier years.
