November Pick ups
3 Attachment(s)
I guess I'll kick if off this month. A few items from an old friend who kept telling me he had a few things he thought I might like....I'll say.
- Three vintage gloves, I'm not a glove collector but love vintage equipment. - Two Ted Williams autographs he acquired as a kid. |

Eagles flag
This is my favorite pickup in a long time for the Eagles collection. It is a massive pennant/banner that reportedly hung at Franklin Field during the late 1950's. I have been searching for a possible image of this banner in action at Franklin Field, to no avail yet, but I'll keep searching. The banner measures about 9 feet long by about 5.5 feet wide at the left side. It is going to be a challenge to display, but I have a space planned for it.

Very nice, Rob. How large is the photo?

Clearly, this isn't in the same league as the items posted. However, having only been collecting for about a year, it's a big deal to me. It's important for a couple of reasons. It represents my 1st local find having paid 10.00 bucks for it at a local flea market as well as my first game used bat. The bat belonged to one Tony Parker, a 4th round draft pick of the '65 Phillies. Parker was a pitcher who never made it out of the minors before leaving baseball in '71. I've been looking for him since picking up the bat with no luck. Any advice in locating him would be great.

Gary, the albumen itself is about 6"x9". A pretty good size image for that time period.

bf3 premium

Hi Mike, In 1936 Red Ball Gum Co. came out with a counter top display with 16 small bf3 pennants attached to it. On the display there was an offer to get a large premium pennant. Very few of the large pennants have survived. Of the sixteen possible pennants I have yet to see several. Every so often one or two will show up. The two above are the nicest I have ever seen. The Red Sox pennant is the first one that I have seen. Below is the original counter top display picturing the possible 16 pennants. Below that are some actual premium pennants.

Johnny Vander Meer holy grail pickups
4 Attachment(s)
Many thanks to net54 board member Chris Gamble for allowing me to add these holy grail Vandy items related to John Vander Meer Day in Johnny's home town Midland Park, NJ on September 21, 1938:
The first item is an original program from the event. I've always hoped that I would find one of these ever since Chris showed me a scan of this over a year ago. The second is an original photo of the John Vander Meer Testimonial Dinner attended by many of Vandy's family, friends and neighbors. Vandy is difficult to see in this scan, but he's seated at the table in the back of the room at the base of the American flag. Condition issues aside, these are extremely scarce collectibles from the same year that Vander Meer became the only pitcher in ML history to throw back to back consecutive no-hitters on 6/11/38 and 6/15/38. I'm very happy to add these to my personal collection. Thanks Chris! |

Clearly this isn't in the same league as the other pick ups. However, it's significant to me for a couple of reasons. The bat represents my first local find and my first game used piece. I found it at a local flea market and picked it up for 10.00. It belonged to John Parker a 4th round pick of the Philies in 1965. Parker was a pitcher and bounced around the minors before leaving the game in 1971. A huge thanks to Brock L. for taking the time to answer my bat questions.

I don't collect negatives though am a collector of early World Cup (soccer) memorabilia and recently purchased some negatives from the first World Cup tournament held in Uruguay in 1930.
Yesterday, I decided to add to those with a few baseball negatives from George Burke (via John Rogers photo archive): http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a.../negative1.jpg http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a.../negative2.jpg http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a.../negative3.jpg http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a.../negative4.jpg |

1936 Los Angeles streetcar ticket featuring an image of Joe Louis and advertising the Golden Gloves competition. Believe it or not, prior to WWII Los Angeles had a vibrant and efficient public transport system of streetcars that was acquired and killed by the auto-related industries and politicians willing to back the freeway system. All we have left are very colorful and collectible tickets.

Won this cool pin from the Louisville Colonels of 1897 which included 24 year old manager Fred Clarke, 23 year old Honus Wagner and 20 year old Rube Waddell. Wagner's rookie year. Has a celluloid face on it. Was on the cover of the Hunt Auction catalog from Louisville Slugger sale and I didn't think I'd have a chance but I was able to score it. A little more than I wanted but my Louisville collection would not have been complete without it.

Mike - Great Dimaggio photo. I had a bid in on it. I was hoping no one else noticed it was from his rookie year..

Those Burke negs are awesome. Wonderful shots.

1927 Yankees Spring Training Schedule
I have had this a while, but thought some of the Yankee fans might want to see it. It came from Ray Morehart's estate (sub for the '27 Yankees), and I guess he or his wife drew Babe Ruth on the front of it:

Also, that is not meant to take anything away from the pick-ups. A Burke is a Burke, and those are some phenomenal shots! I only wish I had more expendable income right now to pick some up myself, if for no other reason than to add to my library of Burke scans (without those darned watermarks they throw in every image). Correction: Upon checking the bracephoto.com website, I noticed that the contact address has been changed to Rogers Photo Archive, so the negatives are definitely from the Burke/Brace collection that Mary had been managing (with family help) following George Brace's passing. There are about another 250 or so negatives coming up in the next Legendary auction (with some familiar key images) that I just got an e-mail about today, and those are just the tip of the iceberg with many thousands more in the archive. |

So, I was able to work out a deal with Shawn to buy this picture All I can tell you is that this picture, frame, etc. is STUNNING!!! I contacted Shawn after he listed it for sale on the B/S/T and we negotiated and called each other several times and had a great time talking collectibles to Shawn. Let me tell you one thing, Shawn England is a CLASS ACT 100%!! After we spoke and the picture was listed on ebay, we agreed on a price and it arrived at my home yesterday. The clarity of this picture is AMAZING and I am glad to have it as part of my collection!!
Again, let me reiterate, it is my opinion that this is the original frame as it is waaaaaaaay old with nails holding it in and all. Also, it is my belief the frame is period, and I thought about re-framing it, but then when I cleaned the glass and put it back in, I said "NO WAY!!" I am hanging it on the wall as is. Thanks again Shawn, for an awesome transaction, and can't wait until we speak again! Here is a picture after I received it and cleaned the glass and frame up a bit. |

Granted, Brace didn't help clear up confusion when he continued to produce prints of Burke's photos for years and years following Burke's death, which he stamped with his Brace Photo stamp on the back. But that shot was definitely taken by Burke in 1936 or 1937. |

These are my most recent photo pickups. The first is of the 1942 Service All Stars. I was unaware that they had played a game at Municipal against the winners of the 1942 MLB All Star Game. Feller was the starting pitcher and is in the center of the photo. This link http://research.sabr.org/journals/fo...-all-star-game leads to a SABR article about the game. The second photo depicts the Dean Brothers in 1934. The final two photos are of Connie Mack 1930 and a 21 year old Bill Veeck in 1935. The cigarette in Veeck’s hand is a bit prophetic when considering the manner of his death.

Some recent new arrivals...
Late 1940's Jim Hegan game used Cleveland Indians hat. Has hard plastic inserts on both sides to give his dome a little protection behind the plate. 1919 Babe Ruth sheet music. And the "other" Don Larsen perfect game commemorative plate. |
Picked up this photo of The Babe last night. I love it. He's signing bats while in the military for other soldiers stationed around the country. The tags on the bats have the names of different bases on them.
The best part about the photo though is that it was taken on July 22, 1926. Exactly 59 years to the day before I was born. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...ms/TheBabe.jpg |
Great image on the sheet music Brock.

I just picked up this Ed Ruelbach Type I photo. It is a Carl Horner photo that was used on Ruelbach's T204 Ramly, 1906 Fan Craze and Colgan Chip issues.
Alot cheaper than the Honus Wagner's Horner image at Legendary! http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=8427 |

Here's a book I've had for a while, but just now took a pic of: Spalding's 1885 'Art of Base Ball Fielding'. I plan to copy all the pages and make them available, but scanning is impossible without damaging the book. The cool part is that it's clearly based on the professional game's fielding, which at the time did not involve gloves. |

The best thing about these programs was the price. I got them for free from a vendor because the package was slow in getting to the Post Office. I actually got two of the 1947 PCL programs, same cover, different weeks.
