Are You A T206 Collector?
What percentage of Net54'ers collect T206 cards? Let's try to keep it binary -- either you do or you don't. There is no gray in this poll.
|
Yes...Sweet Caporal backs only.
-Chris. |
Yes. 520 set
|
Yes, particularly ones with stamps on the back but they don't have to be stamped for me to buy them.
AndyH |
yes just polar bear
|
no, too much other great stuff out there.
|
I have 100+ but haven't bought one in years. So I guess the answer is was but not currently.
|
Finished 518/518, but have 601 total.
|
T206
Yes, they're the only cards I collect :)
Hopefully one day I'll at least get to 518, with possibly most of the backs represented. Sincerely, Clayton |

Have had close to 100 but never pursued the set or never will. Great cards but if I collected the set I would want it all.....Wagner, Plank, Magie, Doyle, etc,etc..to me anything less is a partial set or near set....so it will never happen....still have a a few that I'm keeping for PC

Yes. HOF's only though (which includes Hal Chase)

'Finished' @ 520 - now picking up upgrades from time to time.
|
Yes, but I'm slowly going backwards at the moment.
|
I have a couple HOFs from the set, but I plan on adding more in the future.

"There is no gray in this poll."
Am i the only one who found this sentence funny? :) i have been collecting T206 for over 20 years, love the set! |
Yes, preferably the oddities & HOFs

As for T206, I said yes, because I have around 30-45....but I only collect oddities, backs and any card I like. ...cause that's just the way I roll. |

I graduated off of the T206 gateway drug late last year. I'm now working (slowly) on the E105 set.
|
Yep...Mainly HOF's concentrating on Cobb, Johnson, Matty, Young, Lajoie and Speaker.
|
Nope. They don't appeal to me.
|
I'm confused Leon, is your monster number 30 or 45?
|
Never have, never will.............
|
Yes, I bought my first five T206s at a flea market when I was eight and have been hooked ever since!

Don't see the appeal. Like my black and white 20's cards.
|
I picked up around 100 low grade cards a couple of years ago when I was really motivate but since my interest level has decreased substantially. Part of me wants to dump them and go after something different (1933 Goudey) but I just can't pull the trigger.

Static Cling
Never has been a main focus, but over the years if you collect all 20th century Pre-WW2 like I do, the things just kind of end up sticking to the collection as if they were statically charged.
I can't imagine why any collector would not have a few, or at least an example in their little cardboard piles...they are about as recognizable and historically relevant an issue we have to collect. Brian |
When I first got into prewar (nearly 10 years ago), I had great ambitions of chasing the monster. I was building a Giants subset while mixing in as many backs as I could. I only made it about 10% into the set when I realized just how many other issues were out there that clearly needed to be collected ;)
In the years since, my collection has evolved regularly. I'll likely never return to trying to complete the monster, mostly because of the big 4, but there will likely always be a 'T206 component' to whatever I'm collecting. Regards, Richard. |

I answered no...because I no longer buy T206's. I still have maybe 10-15 of them in my collection...and I will most likely always have my green cobb.
I bought my first T206 in the early eighties...and T206's are what got me seriously into vintage in the early nineties...back collecting...and while I joke a lot about not liking them...show me one of Tony A's incredible portraits...or a super rare back...or a bizarre freak...and it still get's my juices flowing...how can it not?! |
I will say yes, but have only just recently started.

part of the reason they do not appeal to me is because they are so recognizable, owning a couple at this point would look out of place in my collection. |
Yes, but they're not mine.

Sorry, but I just get all worked up when someone mentions those beautiful '20s cards :) |
Yes, at 145 but running out of cash. Focusing on HOF.
|
No, I prefer cards with photos or at least a writeup about the player (some stats, hometown, batting average, something).
|
Yes. But my primary set to collect is T205
|
Once upon a time, yes. Alas, I traded about 125 off. I still have my first - Oscar Stanage.
Erik Greenwood |
Yes. Well, I used to, anyway. Finished up the Superbas set, so I stopped. I may SGC 'em and grab some back variations when I do so.
|
Limited To Chicago
My number is, very modestly, at 61 cards. All Chicago players except for an Ed Willett that I don't remember how it got included. I just need a few of the Tinker, Evers and Chance variations to make my goal.

Maybe you guys should have one around just so that in the future you don't, horror of horrors, purchase one by mistake. Just kidding...I do see your points though. Brian |
Needless to say, I voted yes.
My T206 story(s) to follow. TED Z |
T206's....to be or not be....that is the question ?
The T206 Monster mysteriously has a way of affecting you. This phenomena is best captured by these classic lyrics in the song.... Hotel California .....
" You can check-out any time you like. But, you can never leave " The following expierences exemplify those lyrics.....and, keep this in mind as you read them.....I am not a rich dude (perhaps, just a smart or lucky dude). I started collecting T206's in the late '70s. I completed a 521-card set (included Magie) by the mid '90s. In 1997, I sold this set to one of my best friends in the hobby (member of this forum). I needed $$$$$ in order to acquire cards of other vintage sets (N162, E90-1, GOUDEY's, etc.) that I was working on. And with that transaction, I was done with T206's ...... been there, done that ...... :) so, I thought :) In 2005, an opportunity presented itself to acquire a T206 collection of 555 cards. These cards were graded VgEx > ExMt, so I could not pass up this deal. I purchased these cards and completed a 2nd set of T206's (520 cards)......my T206 obsession was back. Then in 2006, I decided to break-up this set and embark on completing an all-PIEDMONT set. This adventure turned out to be a lot of fun. Dave Czuba was working on his T206 set. At the Fort Washington Show, Dave gave me his PIEDMONT cards and I traded him their counterparts with other backs. November of 2006, I had put together a 518-card all-PIEDMONT set. Furthermore, having won a collection of 262 - SOVEREIGN cards in Barry Sloate's Nov 2006 auction, (plus having 52 SOVEREIGN cards) started me on com- pleting an all-SOVEREIGN set. At first, this project seemed easy. No "Big 6" and no tough Southern Leaguer's needed. Nevertheless, it was quite a challenge to determine the 68 additional subjects that were NOT PRINTED with SOVEREIGN backs. A complete SOVEREIGN set comprises of 402 different T206's. Also, I acquired the 6 "Super-Prints" with their tougher SOVEREIGN 460 backs. Since then, I have gradually been adding cards in order to complete a master set. Sept 2008, I completed my 5th set (missing only Wagner & Plank). It comprises of 467 different SWEET CAPORAL (Factory #30) cards. I chose this T-brand as these cards are very available. The Demmitt & O'Hara (St Louis variations), Joe Doyle (error), Kleinow (Boston), Lundgren (Cubs), Magie, Smith (Chicago & Boston), and the 48 - Southern League cards need not apply. Hey guys, I recommend trying for this SWEET CAP set, as you'll find it relatively easy to complete and quite affordable (when compared to other T206 sets). That's my story....yes, I'm an obsessive T206 collector....but, the real reward of collecting all these little tobacco cards is all the great friends that I've made in this process over these past 33 years. Was a collector of T206 cards in the early 70's. When common cards were 50 cents each & HOFers were $2.-$5. each. At that time, it was really a hobby, no e-bay, no price guides, & no grading. Today, I'm strictly a dealer of T206 cards.
|
And you thought I was ignoring you, but ......
don't think for a minute that I haven't been watching this thread. From the looks of the poll results so far it sure looks like there are some new Monster Numbers lurking. It's time to fess up or suffer the consequences.:eek::eek:

I'm a T206 collector. Actually "hoarder" may be more appropriate for me. No defining lines to my T206 collecting.
Frank...You caught me! I got a couple T206s coming in the mail. I'll update my Monster # when they arrive. Jantz |
I voted YES in the poll, but I dont collect the T206 set. I have been collecting Yankees (Highlanders), and recently got the last card and now have the whole team set, which to me is all the FRONT different pictures, I dont worry about whats on the back.
The only other T206 card I have is a Christy Mathewson in poor shape due to it being a New York card. |
