Bob Feller speed test night August 20th, 1946

2 Attachment(s)
Here is a photo of Bob Feller throwing a 98.6 MPH pitch on August 20th, 1946 at Washington DC. The pitch was measured using a fairly sophisticated contraption for 1946. This promotional night was announced by Senators management to the public prior to the unsuspecting Feller and the visiting Indians arriving for their appointed series in Aug. 1946. Oops! Rumor has it that Feller refused, and only agreed to participate once the Senators agreed to cough up $500. If nothing else, Rapid Robert was no slouch when it came to sniffing out a business opportunity.

By today's standards this looks pretty primitive, but consider that prior to this, Feller's fastball was measured by him throwing a ball through a target at the same time a speeding guy on a motorcycle raced to the same target at 90 MPH.

Just for grins, take the time to watch Feller throw in this speed test on YouTube. The coolest part is one of his errant pitches knocks the crap out of the contraption and splinters one of the supporting beams in the front of it. It's worth a couple minutes of your time if you're interested... I know I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of his heaters!

I've also included the game ticket to the event. Enjoy!

I just got home from work and I was surprised to see such a terrific response to this thread! Thanks to everyone for posting so many great pieces... but, we're just getting started!

Now I must admit that part of my motive in starting this thread was to see David's absolutely incredible July 4, 1939 ticket stub! The #1 ticket in the hobby as far as I'm concerned. And I think I can speak for Mark & Ben as well. Although Ben also has one of the top tickets in the hobby, if I can just get him to post it... Ben?

And Rob. I thought I was the only one walking around with that information stuck in my head! ;) Great stub Rob, especially for such a dedicated Tribe fan like yourself!

Here's a couple more TYPE 1 photos that need no introductions... :D

Scott, that's a great ball. How did you get that one? I can say without a doubt that Vandy's record will never be broken...maybe tied, but does anyone really expect a pitcher is going to throw 3 no hitters in a row?

Jimmy, thanks for starting this thread. Famous plays and tickets for those games are now a primary focus in my collecting. I know I'll never get a 7/4/39 Gehrig ticket or a "shot heard round the world" ticket, but there are so many other great events that are readily available.

Here are a couple of signed magazines representing famous plays. I don't have the tickets for these yet, but they're on the to get list.

Mike,
I wish that I owned the Vander Meer 2nd no-hitter game ball, but I do not. It was in the collection of baseball collector/ composer Seth Swirsky until a few months ago, but was sold in the Heritage Seth Swirsky Auction. It sold for over $10K, BTW.

I have known about the ball for several years, and have hung on to the photos of it that were on Swirsky's website. For my collection this would definitely be a "Holy Grail" piece, but I coudn't afford it when it came up for sale. You never know though, I may attempt to own it at some point in my life if I'm given another shot at it...

33 Inning Game

1 Attachment(s)
I was fortunate enough to attend the ending of Pro baseball's longest game, the 33 inning affair between the Rochester Red Wings & the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1981.

Using a Press Pass from the Providence Journal got me in the press box area w/ hundreds of reporters from around the world covering the game. After the game was over my BILaw took my pass into the locker room & got some sigs from a few of the principals in the PawSox victory & I have since added some other mainstays of the game.

Signatures include Bobby Ojeda (winning pitcher), Dave Koza (winning RBI), Marty Barrett (winning run), team owner Ben Mondor (now deceased) and the 2 HOFer's to play in that game (Wade Boggs & Cal Ripken).

One of my most favorite pieces of memorabilia & I'm sure one that is unique in the hobby.

Hi Jeff---

Just saw your post.

The main thing I recall from that final day was the massive media coverage from all over the world. They closed off several sections of seating just to have a place for the media to set up. ----and then it was over in about 10 minutes or so as Pawtucket scored in it's first atbat! There was chaos on the field as the media descended to interview players & head for the locker rooms!

National columnist & author Dan Barry of the NY Times previously worked under my sister at the Providence Journal before going to NY. He wrote this book on the historic 33 inning game this past yr. and it's now a nice companion piece to my Press Pass from that game.

Showing the cover & real nice personal inscription page:

Happy to do it Mike! I knew that this would be right in your wheelhouse, along with Scott and myself. Yours and Scott's projects are simply mind boggling. To stay the course and keep focused enough to see it to completion, is something I know I'll never experience. :o What a great sense of achievement one must feel when the final piece has been put into place. I truly admire all collectors that have the will and discipline to finish projects that they start. I know that Scott just recently finished a project that took him over TEN years to complete!

And so, even though all my tickets and programs have been sold and converted into Beatles memorabilia, I just couldn't part with the photos! ;)

Here's the 1933 American League All-Star Team led by the Grand Old Man, Connie Mack. The Bambino, of course, hit the first Home Run in All Star Game History and lead the Junior Circuit to a 4-2 victory.

Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax ML Strikeout record tickets and scorebooks

7 Attachment(s)
Thanks, Jimmy! As Jimmy stated, this thread is definitely in my wheelhouse.

Here are some of my all-time favorite tickets and scorebooks in my personal collection:

1) Ticket stubs from the last game of HOF'ers Sandy Koufax's 382 K Cy Young season in 1965 and Nolan Ryan's ML record 383 K season in 1973.

Koufax still holds the NL and lefty hurler record for a single season, although (future HOF'er) Randy Johnson got close a couple of times.

Nolan Ryan is a collecting focus of mine and I am biased, but IMHO I believe that his 383 K record is more impressive because he did it in the AL during the 1st year of the DH era (1973). In 1973 American League pitchers didn't have the luxury of padding their strikeout totals by pitching to other hurlers.

Note: Had a rainout in KC not washed out one of Nolan's starts in September, he might have possibly struck out 390-400 batters in 1973. Additionally, he was scheduled to pitch the final game in Anaheim in 1973, but still managed to break Koufax's record in spite of pulling a hamstring in the 383 K game. I was actually at this game and saw Ryan set the ML record.

2) Scorebooks/programs from Sandy's 382 K game and Nolan's ML record 383 K game

3) Dated parking pass from Ryan's 383 K game

Final home game of the Mets' first season, 1962. At the time, it was thought to be the final baseball game at the Polo Grounds - the radio broadcast of the game begins with Lindsey Nelson commenting, "Polo Grounds may never be the same, but [it] won't really matter very much because this is the final game of the season here, and the Mets are scheduled to open up next year at the new municipal stadium at Flushing Meadows." (As everyone knows, the Mets played another season at the Polo Grounds, and the new stadium, which we know as Shea Stadium, opened in 1964.)

July 13, 1977 game program.
It was acquired and scored at the game by a much younger version of me. I was present at the game with my father.

This game was played on July 13, 1977. Ray Burris vs Jerry Koosman.
It was around 9:30 pm with Lenny Randle batting. The stadium went dark. You could see a little out the back that the whole area was dark, but nobody knew it was the whole of NYC that had lost power.
It was kind of surreal. For a while, everyone waited, figuring it was temporary. No one panicked. The organist, Jane Jarvis, played music. In a bit, a couple of cars were brought on to the field through the outfield fence. The headlights were put on to light up the field and a few players came out to run around and entertain us. I don't know who they were as we couldn't see them all that well.
A bit later, the news filtered in that the whole of NYC was blacked out. Most people hurried to their cars to get out of there. My dad drove home without any highway or street lights. There was lots of mayhem.

The blackout lasted until the next day. Power returned one area at a time starting around 7am. By 10:40 the power had been restored to the entire city. Unfortunately, this blackout was marked by extreme vandalism and theft.

Just read Koosman had 11 strikeouts when the lights went out.

Here is the only known season pass/ticket to NY Giants' Christy Mathewson's 1st no-hitter on July 15, 1901. Matty no-hits the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0. Only 5,000 patrons attended the game, witnessing what marked only the beginning of Mathewson's great HOF career.

The pass is issued to Bryan Snyder, which arranged train transportation for the Cardinals baseball team.

The pass is signed by Frank deHass Robison that was the team owner of the Cardinals and the Cleveland Spiders. League Field in St. Louis was also named Robison Field in his honor.

Actually first of three. Here's number two. I'm still trying to find number three from August 22, 1976. My website below tells the whole story.

1949 NIT Basketball Tournament Point Shaving Game

3 Attachment(s)
Thought I'd share an interesting recent find. I picked up this Spalding Basketball scorebook recently. It has several college games from the NY area as well as a few Pro games. This book was apparently the official book used for those games. The Pro games were at Madison Square Garden and included the NY Knicks, Washington Caps, Rochester Royals and Minneapolis Lakers (with George Mikan). However, it also included some of the games from the 1949 NIT games at the Garden. The really interesting game, as it turns out, is the game between Kentucky and Loyola of Chicago. This is the game that Alex Groza, Ralph Beard and Dale Barnstable fixed with some bookies to shave points. Kentucky went on to lose this game and finished the season 29-2. Two years later when it came to light, Beard and Groza were arrested and also banned for life from the NBA, thus ending the careers of two of the greatest players of their era. Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat that this was the official scorebook that captured that infamous game.

1912 World Series game 8 ticket stub- First World Series Championship at Fenway Park!

2 Attachment(s)
Here is a scan of a rare ticket stub to the historic 1912 World Series game 8 deciding game which won the series for the Boston Red Sox, their 1st at Fenway Park, 100 years ago.

The starting pitchers in this game featured the Red Sox Smoky Joe Wood (34 wins in the regular season + 3 in the World Series in 1912) vs. the Giants' HOF'er Christy Mathewson. Smoky Joe and the Red Sox win game 8 with a final score of 3-2. The Sox win the series 4 games to 3 (one game was called because of darkness in a tie).

The lucky patron noted the final score and the teams on the verso of the ticket stub.

Enjoy!

July 22, 1926 Ruth Catches ball from bi-plane

1 Attachment(s)
This probably won’t ever be considered as a historic event. However it was a record setting feat and entertaining nonetheless. July 22, 1926 in a stunt at Mitchell Field in New York, Ruth, a private in the National Guard, caught a baseball that was dropped from a bi-plane. The plane was at an altitude of 250 feet and traveling at about 100 miles-per-hour. The record was reported in the October 2, 1926 National Police Gazette. Below are that issue and the original photo depicted on page five.

The Babes record stood until 1939 when it was broken by Cleveland catcher Joe Sprinz. Sprinz caught a ball dropped from a blimp hovering 800 feet overhead. His new record required five attempts. On the fifth attempt, the ball crashed into his glove at an estimated 154 mph. It slammed his glove hand into his face with such force that he broke his upper jaw in twelve places, fractured five of his teeth, and was rendered unconscious. He also dropped the ball.

Here is an off topic question regarding the Gehrig pictures and Lou Gehrig day.

I have noticed that all of the ball players in the pictures are wearing undershirt sleeves. Looking through archived information, all information points to the fact that July 4, 1939 was a hot muggy day with temps around 85 degrees. Why were all the players wearing sleeves under their wool uniforms?

The only logical thought I have on this is that the undershirts soaked up the sweat so the uniforms would not be so heavy when the sweat was absorbed. Other than this, I cannot think of any reason why they would wear long sleeves on a hot, muggy July day.

Any thoughts?

Just noticed how this ticket says, in large bold letters, FIRST ROW. I can just imagine the lucky person with this ticket walking with a George Jefferson swagger as he walks down the aisle down to the front row.

Incidentally, June 18, 1927 was also the day the Post Office Department issued an air mail stamp commemorating Lindbergh's achievement. St. Louis was where the stamp was issued, and it's safe to presume "Lucky Lindy" also played a role in the dedication ceremonies.

Gary,
That's a cool post!
Is this the same stamp that was produced with the extremely rare upside down plane error?

The Tickets below are from games I have attended. Not necessarily historic but I certainly enjoyed them all. Ryan’s Last Game, Randy Johnson Ks 19 (LH record) and gives up a 538ft HR to McGwire, we were in the cheap seats and the ball still went over our heads, opening week at Arlington, Nolan’s 6th no hitter (I missed that one), Ryan vs. Clemens ( 16 inning 15Ks and 3 runs between them awesome game!), Griffey JR & SR first game together, McGwire tickets for Hrs. 60 and 61( We sat in Big Mac Land), The photo is of Don Larsen a few days after the Perfect game. The slug explains that he had returned to clean out his locker. The players around him are the NY Football Giants, 1951 World Series Program Joes D's last appearance, Dugout lineup card from K-Rods 62nd save, (I have posted this one here before) ball hit McGwire to set AL rookie HR record and tie the MLB record.

Mike,
You have a great collection of items there! I especially like the K-Rod lineup card and the Big Mac rookie signed ball.

BTW, the Ryan vs. Clemens game played on 9/7/92 (Texas Heat # 3) was an excellent one, but my guy Ryan was outmatched by Rocket Roger in this game. That being said, I recall that Nolan left this game in the eighth or ninth inning with an injury.

FYI, I believe that this game only went the standard 9 innings, not 16. Nolan's high water mark was 12 innings. He did this twice in his 27 year career...

Here is a scan of Red Sox broadcasting great Ken Coleman's personal scoresheet from Texas Heat # 1 which featured Texas flamethrowers Nolan Ryan and Rocket Roger Clemens in their first hookup. Ryan won this one 2-1.

I'm also including a scan of season ticket stubs to Texas Heat # 1 and # 2. Overall, Roger won two of the three games where they faced off. No matter what the outcome, the fans in attendance walked away the winners!

Scott,
Impressive group of items you posted, as always. What I meant was sixteen innings of pitching combined between the two. Ryan gave up all three runs in the nine inning game.

No... you're thinking of the "Inverted Jenny," which was issued in 1918...

Coincidently, though, Lindbergh's first airplane was a war-surplus Curtiss Jenny.

Thanks also, David for providing the add'nl detail. I thought the plane looked familiar. :)

It's a bit messy, but here's a scorecard from the Oct 1, 1933 game where the Babe beat his old team for his 94th career victory. He also hit a home run that day (#686).

What a terrific piece, Doug! And messy is a good thing when it comes to old scorecards, IMO. Here's a TYPE 1 Photo from Babe's 93rd career win, also at the expense of the Bo Sox!

Sept. 28th, 1930 on the last day of the season. Babe hurled a complete game victory against his former team the Boston Red Sox. The final score was 9-3. Read about it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/17/sp...ll/17ruth.html
