June pickups

Picked up my raw Jackie for my '56 set! Really love the color, centering and corners, but the sliiiiiiiight top/bottom diamond cut drives me nuts!

Ha, well-said. Don't get me wrong, I'm real happy with it! I better be in case my wife checks the paypal account to see what I paid (she'd never understand what a good deal I got) :)

Great card

mintacular 06-02-2012 06:58 PM

I don't

I don't see the diamond cut you are referring too. No vintage card is perfect at some point you learn to love the minor imperfections which makes it vintage. Love the '56 JRob was thinking about buying a similar card last month but keep getting distracted with other cards

novakjr 06-03-2012 09:13 AM

I vaguely see the DC. Doesn't bother me one bit, that Jackie is absolutely gorgeous... Congrats on the pickup.

Also can't see the diamond cut on that card. Back in the '80's, my wife discovered I spent 28 bucks on a NM '51 Bowman Ford card and she hit the ceiling. Spent the next month monitoring her bills and confronted her over a fifty dollar shoe purchase. Not the same thing, according to the boss...I had to agree.

Oh, the irony. No kidding, just saw the wife's buy of $50 for a pair of shoes--FLIP FLOPS!!--on paypal. I'm storing that little nugget away should I need it.

Very nice Mick pickups, gents! My vintage stops at '57, so gearing up to trade all my '78 and later that I collected, for '58-'71.

Adam-that Versalles cards is like a some weird modern art painting!

I have nothing so esoteric but this finishes off my 48-57 Topps and Bowman Dodgers run. Now for the upgrades!

Dave--congrats on the run. Adam---as Dave knows I appreciate weird cards and Zoilo sure qualifies...Harrmon too

yes, those two are among the stranger misprints I've acquired. In 1976 at summar camp I recall eating a Hostess product most days. I actually remember getting the Hank Aaron card--he was a favorite of mine. So, picked up a few in memory of 1976:

Thirty years on, I think the $28 spent on a NM 51 B Ford was justified. The $50 shoes, not that much. Only wish I had the guts then to put down a hundred or two on the NM Mantle rook card. ;)

Nice Whitaker Rob. I love the '78's, there's some nice rookies in that set, especially for the Tigers. The multi-player rookies are nice, plus the individual cards of Whitaker, Trammell and Morris in the '78 Topps Burger King set make for nice contrast..

Also, gotta throw out some love to that Mantle. Very F'ing nice Matt...

Is there a checklist of the 68 Milton Bradley cards?

My 2010 standard catalog does not even list them.

ALR-bishop 06-18-2012 04:55 PM

1968 Topps Milton Bradle

Dave---There is a checklist in the 2011 Catalog,,,and I think there is one in the 2010 too. Did you look under Topps as opposed to Milton Bradley. It will be under 1968 Topps. If you don't find it I can fax or mail you a copy. Or scan it and post it here

Thanks Al, I found it under 68 Topps.

Another question - How and why did Topps choose who they did for this game set?

ALR-bishop 06-19-2012 08:14 AM

Topps Milton Bradley

David---I don't know the answer to that. Maybe Dave Hornish has some idea. There were also football and some other sports cards in the full game set. I think Dave has a picture of the game box and contents on his blog site A full game set went for a lot of money, I think over $ 5K , not long back

Whoever chose the 1968 Topps baseball cards for the Milton Bradley Win-A-Card set picked out seven random horizontal rows of eleven cards from the uncut sheets of the first two series of 1968 Topps Baseball. That would explain why they didn't include Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Tony Perez, Don Drysdale, Billy Williams, and Willie Stargell, but did include mediocre players like Chuck Hartenstein, Danny Frisella, and Bobby Locke. They did include Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, Tom Seaver, Brooks Robinson, and Rod Carew, though. Two rows each were chosen from the first two sheets pictured and three rows from the third sheet pictured. I would guess that the three rows of 1967 Topps Football cards and the two rows of 1965 Topps Hot Rod cards were chosen the same way from the original uncut sheets.

Great info, thanks Cliff. I know from working on it the set is pretty ho hum as to it's contents. The Ryan is the most expensive but easiest to find. It shows up on ebay all the time. The commons are harder, partly I think because, unlike the Cox and Brinkman cards, which are notable for their front differences, many sellers don't know what they are since they involve only subtle back differences
