Two great pickups Jimmy
|
Geez Jimmy, you said you got a type 1 of The Captain, but I don't see Jeter in that photo anywhere :D:D . Seriously, that's a great photo and I too would like to know where the heck you find all of the Beatles stuff.
|
Jimmy,
What a GREAT photo of Gehrig used for his 1961 golden press card. Truly a fantastic shot! The MINTY Beatles stuff you have acquired is second to none that I have seen. Lots of Beatles stuff out there but you somehow find the rarest stuff in the highest condition. That is a pretty good combination I would say! Great way to start the month! It is hard to believe we are almost to the midway part of the year. I have added a couple more TYPE 1 Photos to my collection below. A). Roger Maris’ 61st HR taken by Olen. It is very interesting that Olen shot it from the rafters as he could have had any pick of a seat as a yankee photographer. I truly believe this is one of the greatest images of this historic day and am VERY happy to have added it to “The Vault”. <a href="http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/ad320/weino23/?action=view&current=maris61best.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad320/weino23/maris61best.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> B). Gehrig portrait used for his 1941 memorial day ticket as well as the memorial at Yankee stadium. Definitely a defining portrait of Lou. It has some emulsion on his chin but for some reason it doesn't bother me as much as maybe it should. Perhaps it is because it is 1 of 3 examples known and didn't cost me 8k. :) <a href="http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/ad320/weino23/?action=view&current=gehrig41ticket2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/ad320/weino23/gehrig41ticket2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |

This may have become the favorite item in my collection, definitely top 5. I'm a huge Brooks Robinson and Orioles fan. Although this isn't a game used jersey, it is about as close as you can get. It's a 1971 salesmen sample set complete with pants.

baseball cigarette holder
1 Attachment(s)
picked this up on the net for 12 bucks. Listed as a toy but it really is a cigarette holder from the 1910s to 20 which says short stop on the side and stitched around the ball. Its either bakelite or some other resin. c.p.f. was a pipe manufacturer from ny. great unused little piece.

bf2 premiums
Thanks for the nice comments. I now have seven of the known nine premiums. The Alexander just sold in the legendary auction, and the only known cobb sold in the 1999 Halper auction and hasn't surfaced since then.

Completely original and perfect working order.

This is an 1897 woodcut printing block used for publication of a newspaper [haven't figured out which one yet] showing Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons, who fought for the heavyweight title. Note the names are backwards on the block--it was a direct transfer print [ink goes on the surface then right onto the paper]. The wood is hardwood and the printing surface is heavily crazed from the chemicals used to create the print.

there is a hole in the baseball that fits the cig perfectly. its only a little over 2 3/4" long. thats probably why its short stop. There was one that sold in 2007 but dont know for how much.

That's a very good question, Ben, one I cannot answer. I got it at what I feel was a bargain price because the seller described it as a reversed print on wood rather than as a printing block.

Spalding Official National League Ball
2 Attachment(s)
Picked up this ball today, signed by the 1930 Ontario Senior League Champs The Galt Terriers(Canada). Seems like a 1928-1932 Spalding Heydler ball with Reg. In Canada on it. Do these balls have similar value to the American equivalent?

Aaron Photo

I was thrilled to pick up this one for my photo collection today. Type 1 image of Hank Aaron and Charlie Grimm taken at Hank's Rookie season spring training.

Thanks to Craig, Scott, Mike, and Ben for all your kind words. Much appreciated fellas. :)

And Bob, what a terrific machine and even better photo of your son checking it out! It looks like many memories will be formed from some father and son games played at that very machine! Another great pick-up for you Adam. Your restoration Exhibit machine was sensational and these woodcuts are simply historic, especially for such a huge Boxing collector like yourself! |
Must be a very early photo of Aaron, he doesn't even have a number on his jersey yet.

Picked up this c1864 engraving on eBay this afternoon... titled "FOOT BALL" in the original frame.....It's a monster at 43" wide x 24" tall...I actually have a copy that needs framed and a little restoration...but this one's framed and ready to go on the wall. <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=6bb3436f.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/6bb3436f.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=74924691.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/74924691.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=c2bcf94f.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/c2bcf94f.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=e2e24da5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/e2e24da5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |

This arrived in yesterday's mail. I'm really excited about this piece. It's a 1964 TOPPS 'Case' shipping box (with the orig shipping label still affixed) that was home to 24 boxes of The Beatles 2nd Series Wax Packs. Hard to imagine any others surviving the last 48 years, but I'm sure glad this one did!

Don't own much of anything other than cards, but picked this up on ebay since it had the set of 12 cards including the Babe Ruth/Tom Mix card.
|
Matt - very nice bat - I bowed out at about $2200
|
This piece was featured in another thread titles 1906 mirror. It never met reserve on ebay, so the owner an I agreed on a price. It belonged to his great Aunt in Chicago. I love it:D

Always loved that piece Mike...nice pickup. Congrats on your B Robby jersey Clint!
I picked this stuff up today in a lot from a local dealer...it's all related to the Lincoln Cleaning and Dye team that won the National Semi Pro championships in 1916. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03589.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03590.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03591.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03592.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03593.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03596.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03597.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...l/DSC03599.jpg |
Where did the Jackson bat sell?

Wow Dan, that was a sweet haul of pictures! Mike, I agree with Dan as I too have always liked those mirrors. I believe they are way under appreciated for the era they were made. Matt sweet Jackson bat. Congrats guys.

Here are a couple of my most recent pick-ups. The First Sports Agent (and Babe was his first client!) Christy Walsh's brief professional autobiography entitled "Adios to Ghost" (regarding all the newspapermen he hired to ghostwrite stories for Ruth and many of the top players from that era) These were self published and consequently, are quite scarce. The few that I've seen have all been gifted and inscribed by Walsh. However, this example has a bonus... Walsh (whom was also a cartoonist) penned a terrific scene centered around the larger than life Bambino... Attachment 65861Attachment 65862 And I was very surprised when I came across this extremely rare 1968 Beatles/Yellow Submarine Candy Cigarettes empty box. Yellow Submarine Novelties made in England pale in comparison to their American counterparts, so finding this little gem was a huge find... for me anyway. ;) Attachment 65865Attachment 65866Attachment 65867 |
That candy cigarettes box is awesome. You're having a nice year too, Jimmy.

Got rid of the split drive shaft and carrier bearing and have a custom built drive shaft made. swapped the 2 speed power glide for a turbo 350, mounted washer resivoirs in the trunk for bleach/ water on the rear tires, spark plugs and propane injection the the exhaust, 6 foot flames. Navy days were fun.

I'm extremely stoked to get this latest photo. It's been a long time since I've added anything like this to my prewar collection.

Clint - what's the story behind the photo?

Congrats again Clint! That's a keeper...however I may have to pry it away from you if that is indeed William Jennings Bryan there. ;)

The photo I won off of ebay. As for the game I know Johnson made a few trips back to Kansas for exhibition games. I have rppcs from a game in Humboldt and also probably from this same game in Coffeyville. I strongly believe that William Jennings Bryan is standing between Cheney and Johnson. At the Coffeyville museum they have 4-5 postcards from this game. Larry Cheney and Ad Brennan were from Kansas like Johnson. Not sure why the games were held other than to celebrate the players. Here's a few of the rppcs I was talking about. They also had a loving cup at the museum that was presented to Johnson full of silver dollars given by the crowd. Seems like that cup was much bigger than the one in the photo. Looks like I need to make another trip to Coffeyville.
Thanks Dan, I need to do some more research and I will get back with you on that.:) |

I haven't historically collected Tickets though I do have a few for milestone acheivements (i.e. recent 500 Home Run or 3000 Hit games). On a whim picked up MLB Debut tickets for Mike Trout and Bryce Harper as well as a ticket from Harper's 1st Major League Home Run. Probably limited upside but if these guys end up being as good as they look at this point, maybe I'll have something!

Original Photo pick ups

June has been a very good month for me. I picked up these photos in the last three weeks. I love the 1929 Hack Wilson. It is now one of my favorite images in my photo collection. The 1933 Hornsby is the same image used on his 1933 Goudey card. The 1956 Alston is my first Barney Stein picture. The three Max Carey photos are from 1926 (with Wilbert Robinson), 1932, and 1926. The 1932 image is from the Cullen Cain NL Service Bureau. It is unusual to me as it is on a thicker photo stock and has a dull finish. The two Dimaggio’s are from 1944 and 1949. The action photo was a father’s day gift from my daughter. The 1944 image is interesting because the lady in the photo was the consignor. It is on thick stock similiar to studio photos from that time. The final image is of Hank Aaron being carried off the field following his 1957 pennant clinching homerun. I took a beating in the Henry Yee auction, I only obtained the 1930’s Klein image I posted on that thread. These others certainly took some of the sting out. Thanks for indulging me.

Extremely rare picture of Thomas Moonlight. Moonlight was an Indian fighter, farmer, Civil War hero, pioneer in Kansas baseball, Kansas politician, Wyoming Territorial Governor and Bolivian Diplomat. Moonlight chased Quantrill's raiders, teamed with famed mountain scout Jim Bridger, lead in the formation of the first baseball club in Kansas (1867) , pardoned the Sundance Kid as Wyoming Governor and was appointed Bolivian Diplomat by President Grover Cleveland.
This little bio doesn't do justice to what this guy experienced. It must have been amazing to have seen what he did. |

My only acquisition this month was a 1914 Federal League game ball. I love it already.
|
Well done Clint! That is a beautiful trophy! I wanted it really bad but didn't bid due to the fact of no international shipping and i thought it might go a bit higher.
|
Very nice, Clint...
I was the under-bidder to you. The last few months, I have perfected the art of finishing second :( But very glad you got it- especially with the Kansas connection. Its a spectacular item, and I'm glad it found its proper home. Many congrats! |
Loved it also clint. Almost pulled the trigger. Great pickup on the cup.
