cash option on Mega Millions tonight

is almost $400 Million

Even if you smartly put the winnings into a trust you are allowed to splurge for this

If you won the lottery and could buy just ONE card assuming two caveats

1) The seller would actually part with the card

2) Does not have to be the T-206 Wagner :)

Which card would you purchase and why?

Thanks!
Rich

Missing ink Plank that I held at the 2010 National. That is the only 206 I think I would own.

obcbobd 03-30-2012 06:01 AM

I saw a real nice looking 33 Goudey Ruth autographed in an auction once. I would track it down and buy that

yanks12025 03-30-2012 06:08 AM

Would buying the hall of fame count as one item... :)

kcohen 03-30-2012 06:47 AM

Well, since I'd be stinking rich I'll be greedy and get both a Baltimore News Ruth and a T210-8 Jackson.

kkkkandp 03-30-2012 06:50 AM

I'm With Ken

If I win that much money, I'm not stopping at one stinking card! :D

I'd buy all the Old Judge Hall of Famers I don't already have and couldn't afford otherwise.

soxinseven 03-30-2012 07:04 AM

E107 Cy Young

zljones 03-30-2012 07:09 AM

I just thought of more: E107 Addie Joss, E107 Chief Bender, and all Old Judge HOFers and N300 HOFers. I would also get Cracker Jack HOFers and that Joe Jackson card.

bn2cardz 03-30-2012 07:24 AM

I was telling my wife last night that I would buy the PSA 8 Wagner, and have it resubmitted so that I could take advantage of the "The PSA Financial Guarantee of Grade & Authenticity" once it was determined it was trimmed. (If need be I would get SGC to re-holder the card, then take PSA to court for not holding up their end of the guarantee) :D

It would be a fun way to spend some money.

+1.

I'd go for the one with the white background.

ctownboy 03-30-2012 08:08 AM

My answer is somewhat off beat (people who know me would say, "what else is new?").

With that much money, instead of buying one card, I would try to buy one collection.

I would fly to London and try to buy the Edgar Wharton Tigar baseball card collection from the museum that currently has it. I mean, what good are old American issued baseball cards in England anyway? How many over there really know about them or appreciate them?

Anyway, once I owned them, I would have them all scanned and put on a website so that people could enjoy them and study them. I would then have them all graded and hide them away in safe deposit boxes.

The main condition for the purchase, I would tell the museum, is that I would do what I just said I would do and that none of the cards would be sold individually. If I ever did sell the cards, the museum would get the first shot at buying them back and at the same price I paid for them.

Doing this would allow the museum to have some funds to do other things with, would allow MORE baseball card enthusiasts to see some rare cards and would give the museum comfort in knowing that I wasn't going to just buy the collection and then sell it off piecemeal for a huge profit.

I'm pretty sure that if I won the lottery you guys would grow to hate me quickly. :D (edited to add: If you don't already)

I would definitely try to assemble an N172 set as complete as possible.

travrosty 03-30-2012 08:40 AM

buy all the really big name cards that ever come up for auction and hold a big press conference and bust them all out of the graded holders and put them in regular card savers. Give a speech that chasing specific number grades is a whole other industry unto itself and that people have eyes and can tell the condition of cards and we need to get back to collecting the cards not the grades, and we don't need to entomb our cards and we should be able to take a card out of a card saver and hold the actual card in our hands once in a while and that it's good for the hobby to do that once in a while. They are not made out of eggshells. Okay, go ahead and clobber me now.

CW 03-30-2012 09:00 AM

Sans agenda  , I would buy the nicest T3 Ty Cobb I could find.

If it could simply be a hobby-related item, I might purchase the Babe Ruth autographed ball inscribed to his pal, Ted Williams, which transcends coolness.

mark evans 03-30-2012 09:05 AM

I'm not giving away any secrets until I see the check in my wife's hot little hands. But, I will say that I hope Dan Mckee is around at that time.

Hope to see all in Baltimore.

1963 Topps Pete Rose RC PSA 10 from the Dmitri Young collection - Stunningly perfect specimen

PS: Can I buy these in the state of Florida? (Can you tell I don't play the lottery much?)

I really like your thinking, but to avoid angst, I would get nice VGEX versions of both Wagner and Plank.

I can't believe someone said they would get a leather Johnson - wait until you are about 70 and you will have one automatically.

Scott,

Thanks. I needed that on a day when an impaired driver sideswiped my car parked in front of my house.

I just laughed out loud in front of complete strangers. If I was drinking anything, it would have come out through my nose.

A nice '14 CJ Cobb would be an initial purchase, followed by that autographed t206 Cobb red background that sold a couple years ago.

rc4157 03-30-2012 02:57 PM

'34 Goudey Gehrig #37. Just because I have always thought it was one of the classiest looking cards out there.
RC

Mendoza RC

I'm buying as many Mendoza RCs as I can this week. Imagine the demand for this after everyone loses except one. Pre-order now before 6PM for my special pre-lotto price. Cards will shipped in faux gold envelopes

Texxxx 03-30-2012 03:16 PM

I would buy the NY Yankees. Give the players to Boston. Then turn the stadium into a homeless shelter.

Pup6913 03-30-2012 03:57 PM

Change of plans. I would buy PSA from Joe, fire the graders, and reopen using my invention I have been working on since 2003. With some of the best people in the hobby I could find as employees. May even buy SGC, combine them and eliminate the grading scale. Then I would be more disliked than anyone in the hobby:D

Bill, I'm really sorry to hear that. At least no one was hurt (I'm assuming) - shows that there are many things more important than cards. Actually, almost everything is.

Today I had lunch with a forum member friend and had more laughs than I've had in a long time. The first laugh cancelled out all the issues of the morning. Hopefully you have a great weekend.

GoldenAge50s 03-30-2012 07:07 PM

I would buy the nicest example of the 1951 Bowman Mantle I could find, for 2 simple reasons:

He was my boyhood idol growing up & the one I had in my complete set was stolen from me several years ago & I've never replaced it.

Mdoe 03-30-2012 07:20 PM

Think I would buy a T3 Cobb- not that expensive relative to other cards, but still a great example of early 20th century Americana in general and baseball particularly.

Just To Feel Human

I'd buy each of you the card you would buy for yourselves, then sit in a corner and watch you enjoy them with a silly ass Andy Dufresne smile on my face.

ValKehl 03-30-2012 09:10 PM

I would make an offer to Dan Mckee that he couldn't refuse for all of his WaJo cards!!

Well I guess I have to continue working:(

alanu 03-30-2012 10:12 PM

I hate to say it, but having that much money and being able to buy anything I wanted would take a lot of fun out of collecting anything for me.

ctownboy 03-30-2012 10:27 PM

alanu,

It might take the fun out of collecting, as far as opening up the REA catalog (or any auction catalog for that matter) and saying, "yea, I could buy anything I want in here".

However, for me, it would add excitement because I could start traveling around to small towns and placing ads in newspapers and looking in antique stores again, knowing full well if I were to find something great I would have the money to be able to buy it.

Just think how much fun, excitement and enjoyment you would have if you found an original collection that had an unknown T206 Wagner or Plank in it?
I know I would enjoy that a LOT more than just buying one of those cards from an auction house.

I can see where hunting for collections would be great fun, but for me I just think collecting would just drop on my list of priorities if I had that kind of money to spend.

kcohen 03-31-2012 06:49 AM

Can't believe I forgot!

A PSA 10 Ozzie Smith rookie card.

Bilko G 03-31-2012 07:18 AM

Baltimore News Ruth and a Gem mint O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rook.

CubsFanCurt 03-31-2012 08:15 AM

Since I didn't win it looks like I'm buying a 1999 Mickey Morandini :D

Right now my feeling is that I would dedicate some of that money to trying to entice a Voskamp Viox or Mensor out of hiding. If/when that proved to be fruitless, then I'd just settle for a Voskamp Wagner.

Regards,

Richard.
