A "good news" autograph thread-let's see your autographs

15 Attachment(s)
Several people have complained recently in various threads that only the bad about the autograph hobby is discussed here.
Ok,, here is some of the good. I own most of these items in my personal collection. A few of these items are not in my collection but I have sold them in the past.
Let's see what great autographs are in your collections.

Leon 03-28-2012 11:47 AM

thanks

Thanks Richard
I don't collect autographs but do have a few. As much as I DO agree there needs to be a focus on bad things in this side of the hobby, this thread and others like them, should get equal play time (I know, that's a pipe dream but one can dream....). To that end here is one I have shown before. I bought this card, an M110 Sporting Life Chase, on ebay many years ago for $125 raw. I got it and knew it had some scribbling on it so tried (though not very hard) to erase it. The damn scribble wouldn't erase so I left it. When I posted it on the board a few guys said they thought I could have something there. I sent it to Beckett and JSA and lo and behold it is an authentic Chief Meyers signature. SCORE :).

Great idea, Richard... I'll play along and following your lead, I will include some non-sports autographs as well. :-)

My pride and joy. The ball Mariano Rivera used to strike out Cleveland Indians second baseman Ronnie Belliard, winning the game for the Yankees and giving Rivera his 392nd career save.

The JFK, RFK and presidential, except for the Monroe, are part of my personal collection. The last item was from a symposium on the JFK assassination and is signed by the witnesses to the assassination, Marina Oswald and James Leavell who was the cop that Oswald was handcuffed to when he was shot.
I just sold the Monroe to a board member. I collect Presidential but already had a Monroe in my collection.

Just added this to my collection recently. It was on Ebay about a month ago as a "buy it now" so I took a shot. It came out of the Spalding book which was not shown as part of the auction-only the autograph. The book was in very poor condition and could not be saved. Had JSA authenticate it at the Sun Times show and then proceeded to mat and frame it and this is how it came out. Spalding was originally from Byron, Illinois which is about 15 miles from where I live and he first started playing baseball with the Rockford Forest City team so a close connection to say the least. Was very happy the way the whole piece turned out and will never part with it.

Hey Sean. Only Groucho could come up with something so clever! That's a lifetime keeper, and will certainly make for one terrific conversation piece!
Congrats! My best, Jimmy

milkit1 03-31-2012 10:59 AM

Thanks Jimmy! What makes it even better is I got a COA from Steve Stoliar, Groucho's former assistant and the end all be all Groucho autograph authenticator :) PLUS I can frame it upsidedown and it will appear to be an unpersonalised Groucho signed photo which is also pretty rare.

David- could it be due to the ball being enhanced (which I assume means traced over)?

David Atkatz 03-31-2012 03:23 PM

Yeah--that could certainly be it. (It does mean traced over.)

perezfan 03-31-2012 03:41 PM

With a thick/dark tracing over like that, is there really any way to determine that what's underneath is authentic? Isn't it just guesswork, when the tracing over completely masks the original?

David Atkatz 03-31-2012 04:06 PM

An "enhanced"autograph is virtually worthless, so it really doesn't matter much.

Jay Wolt 03-31-2012 05:01 PM

Took me over a decade (starting in '81) to fill this 1939 first day cover.
I wanted players that played then, although Waite Hoyt retired in '38.
Most of the sigs I got in person at various shows in the East Coast like
Ted Williams in '88 at Atlantic City when he obliged by using a green pen
like Ty Cobb would use.
I gave this to my son in the fall after he had a son, so this could be handed
down yet again.

Here is another ball I bought w/ the WoJo ball, which is also "enhanced", which is the term used by PSA/DNA to describe a sig which has been traced over.
It was determined that the sigs were all originally authentic but the integrity was compromised by enhancement, to use PSA/DNA words. I knew they were when I bought them.

The FDR ball & the Senators/Hodges ball (both untouched) came from the same source, a former CIA Presidential Head Bodyguard for FDR & several other Presidents.

David--

Was very sorry to hear that your 1927 ball has been deemed a forgery as I had long admired it whenever you posted.

Here is my 1930 Senators ball (8 starters plus 1 defensive replacement)--w/ 2 Yankee's--a total of 6 HOF'ers--that was signed early in the 1930 season when the Yankees visited Washington & President Hoover (w/ above mentioned Bodyguard attended). I left the Mgr Johnson sig out of this one. Where & when it was enhanced is unknown.

There was no such thing as the CIA when FDR was President. And the CIA has nothing to do with presidential protection, that is totally done by the Secret Service. There is no such thing as a CIA Presidential Head Bodyguard.

Richard ---

You are correct---I mis-spoke from memory & meant to say Secret Service.

The Grandfather of the woman I bought the balls from was employed by the Federal Govt for most of his life and was a high-up member of the SS who worked under at least 7 Presidents from Coolidge thru LBJ (late 20's thru late '60's).

As she put it, he was assigned as one of the head "body guards" (her words)who accompanied Presidents to various public appearances. She has a picture (of several she showed me) of her Grandfather right behind FDR in the stands as he thew out the 1st ball at a Washington Senators opener.

I saw several other letters of appreciation, commendation, etc of his years of service in Washington for the SS. There is no doubt in my mind that the 4 baseballs were acquired as a direct result of being w/ several Presidents at season openers or other games while accompanying them.

It's best to use the abbreviation "USSS"

Here are a couple more I dug up.

Let's add a little pop culture. I got this from Johnny in the mid 80's. He used to be a pretty big collector. He started with cards and then moved to autographs later. He was very mild mannered and a really nice guy.

Johnny was a regular at the National Pastime shows in Manhattan and always bought from me. He was a signed photo collector.

Richard,
I met him in around 81. At the time, he was putting together 1957 Topps set. For some reason, I have a memory of him buying about 30-40 commons(unslabbed and ungraded) from my Dad and I, at one of the Armory shows or it could've been the Armenian church. He was a regular at all the NY metropolitan areas shows back then.
Shortly after that he got into autographed photos. He became good friends with Heschle and, especially his son, Craig Morgan along with Neal Rosenwasser. Neal, Craig , and I got invited by Johnny to go with him to the Stone Pony to see them play on a Sat night, after he came to the show we were all at. The next day we were all back at the show, very tired. We didn't drink, but we did get back really late.
Wow. It's cool how one photo brings back so many memories.

Best,
Mark

I was never a fan of punk rock, I am a big fan of classic rock.
But I obviously knew who he was and he was always a real nice guy when he came to my table.
