T213 & T215's anyone ? I miss the show em threads and realize this is a narrow focused request, but would love to see anyone out there who would want to share their Type 1 Red Cross or Coupon's. (These seem to fall in the shadows of T206 and don't get discussed or shared enough imho) Show em if you got em ! Thanks, J

Jeremy, you've seen it before, but the only Coupon I have left and no Red Cross.

Mike "Turkey" Donlin.......one of my favorite guys pictured on one of my favorite COUPON cards.

Although his caption states...... ".300 batter 7 years" .....his career BA = .333 which was good enough for Donlin to be in the HOF.
That's if he had taken his Major League BB career more seriously, instead of seeking an acting career in vaudeville and the movies.

One thing is for certain, Donlin was the "toast of the town" in New York City, where all these White-Bordered cards were printed.

Re: Please Show your Type 1 Red Cross (T215-1) & Coupons (T213-1)

I'm a little surprised by the 6:1 ratio (by my rough count) of T213 to T215 so far in this thread. It's far from a scientific survey, of course, but given the recent hype of Coupon 1s, I would have considered their scarcity level more in line with that of the Red Crosses.

Ed - I am to blame a little here as I don't collect Red Crosses and I have dumped several Type 1 Coupon examples in the thread as this is what I collect and have done so for years. You are right... This thread is very far from scientific regarding ratios, so I would not read anything into what you are seeing....

Red Cross and Coupon Type 1's are both rare cards. Extremely difficult to find...

DixieBaseball 02-09-2012 11:19 AM

Fyi

For comparison sake, there are about twice as many Pirate backs graded as there are Type 2 Red Cross and there are less Type 1 Red Cross than Type 2's, so that should give you an idea of how rare these rascals are...

Also, a little further data from some research I did last year... I can only document on average 3 graded examples of each player in the Coupon Type 1 set. (Keep in mind this is graded examples from PSA, SGC & BVG) I am sure some raw Type 1's exist, but to put futher perspective on this, imagine if you were wanting a T206 Red Cobb, and there were only 3 or 4 examples ever graded. They would simply rarely come available for sale and prices would be intense. (I think I remember Leon crowing about how cheap he got his Type 1 Coupon Red Cobb last year, and I agree....) Something further to consider... How many Red Cobb Ty Cobb backs are there graded ? Now, take a peek at how many Red Cobb Type 1 Coupon's that are graded. The numbers are very interesting....

Runscott 03-30-2012 10:03 AM

I don't know much about Coupon and Red Cross cards, but I'm thinking the blue-lettering on your right-side card precludes it from being a Type 1.

Same for Ted Z's Mike Donlin card.

Am I wrong about this?

ullmandds 03-30-2012 10:21 AM

Scott...youre absolutely correct. Those type II's have no place in this thread.

I was seriously only asking.

I have seen the blue-caption cards show up in a lot of 'Type 1' discussions, which had me wondering if I really understood the differences. I only have these two: the single Red Cross and a single Type 1 Coupon, so nothing to compare them to. Also, both of mine are slabbed, so the thinness aspect is lost on me as well (never held type 1's in hand).

...carry on.

edited to add: When I initially picked up the Jennings, Leon had to tell me it was a Type 1, or I would not have known. The other confusing thing I've noticed is that when SGC puts the year range on these (either for Coupon or Red Cross), it doesn't always correspond to what I've seen called 'type 1, 2 or 3', so it must be confusing to them as well.

Hey Jeremy....? for you

Why do so many of these 1910 COUPON cards have a repeated pattern of paper loss in the upper portion of their backs ?

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...willett25x.jpghttp://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...illett25xb.jpg

Thanks Chris for this Willett.

Ted Z...

Hey Ted,

Nice Willett ! I can't explain it, other than perhaps these cards all resided in the same ole time collector's hands and perhaps he stored them in a certain pattern and upon removal they all suffered the same fate. I do know this, there are some really nice Coupon's that have technical grades of 1 or 1.5. They look like 6's on the front, but have the paper loss. They look amazing and are in such beautiful shape (wrinkle free).

FrankWakefield 04-21-2012 10:50 PM

Alright... I can add to my Huggins post back there. Thank you, Chris. Now I have a Huggins T213 type 1.

I know the idea of thinking of the type 1 Coupon cards being like T206's crops up. In a slab they look similar. Hold one in your hand and it is obvious that the type one cards are virtually on paper, not cardstock. The type 1's aren't at all like T206's. At least the slim American Beauty cards look like they were T206 size until a side was trimmed. Their thinness, their fragility, would be a contributing factor to there being few of the type 1 cards...

Frank, the slab kills a lot of learning opportunities regarding cards...and hides quite a few surface creases and other flaws.

Leon suggested that I crack out a '14 CJ just so that I would know what they were really like (thinness mainly). I was kind of stunned - I now have a lot more respect for those that survived.

- Scott - I held my first type 1 several years ago and like you was utterly surprised at just how delicate and ultra thin these cards are... The CJ's as well. It does make you appreciate their survival more and certainly helps one understand why so few survived (Type 1's) compared to Type 2's, etc.

I think I found the answer! Assuming Ted's checklist of T213-I is accurate...there is no donlin in t213-I or t215-I...but maybe II?

Peter

(1) There is no Donlin (bat) in the 1910 COUPON (T213-1) set.

(2) There is a Donlin (bat) in the RED CROSS (T215-1) set (as my listing indicates).

Please check-out the latter bit of info, again.
