"Rip" Foster may not be well remembered, but did star for British national teams in both football and cricket in his day. On it's 110th birthday, this card remains in remarkably better shape than "Rip". May he RIP.

There are no British national teams for either sport.

While Scots, Welsh, and Irish have played for the England cricket side as their own nations don't play the game at test level, in football each of the home countries has its own side. The only exception is special events such as the Olympics, when a UK side has on occasions taken part, usually, as with the current controversy over the 2012 Olympics side, after a great deal of wrangling.

Not "Rip" , but Reginald "Tip" Foster
 

My memory from prior research failed me. Tip is the nickname of this two sport star, whose career is chronicled in the article below. It does appear that that he represented a cricket team from England in Matches is Sydney in 1903. In football he participated in five national games of some sort, against Ireland and Wales from 1900-1902. I hope this clarifies my original post and I hope that I have not offended any soccer fans, historians or members of the Foster family.

Cricket career

Foster was educated at Malvern College and University College, Oxford. He first played for Oxford University Cricket Club in 1897; in addition to cricket, he also represented Oxford at football, racquets and golf.[3] However, although he did fairly well, it was not until 1899 that his beautiful and immaculate driving to the off-side made him into one of the finest batsmen of his time. He had played for Worcestershire while they were still a minor county but in 1899, their inaugural season as a first-class county, he and his brother Wilfrid Foster both scored two hundreds in a match (against Hampshire), a feat which remains unique in county cricket.[4] In 1900, as captain of Oxford, he scored 171[5] to set the record for the highest individual score in the Varsity Match, and he scored 102 not out and 136 for the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord's, the first man to score two centuries in a match in the Gentleman v Players series.[6] In total, Foster scored 930 runs at an average of 77.5 for Oxford in the 1900 season,[7] a record in University cricket.

For these performances, Foster was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1901 and the following year a superb run of form for Worcestershire resulted in him scoring 1,957 runs, at an average of 54.36. However, business prevented him representing the MCC in Australia the following year and England undoubtedly missed his brilliant batting. Moreover, apart from one match against Warwickshire, he could devote no time to first-class cricket in May and June 1902, ruling him out of contention for an England place against Australia.

In 1903, his appearances were restricted to three matches in June and August, but England were desperate for a captain for that winter's Ashes tour. Foster was (oddly) able to arrange to be away from England. Although one might have feared that he would be out of practice, in the first Test at Sydney in 1903, Foster scored 287.[2] This was the highest score in Test cricket until 1930 (surpassed by Andy Sandham), and (as of 2009) remains the highest score by a debutant, the highest by a non-Australian batsman in Australia, and the second highest by a batsman of any nationality against Australia, home or away (surpassed only by Len Hutton's 364 in 1938).[8] For more than a century, Foster also held the record for the highest score in a test match at the SCG, his score not being beaten until Australian Michael Clarke scored 329 not out against India in January 2012.[9] Foster did not follow it up, until the final Test on a vicious wicket at Melbourne, where he top-scored in both innings with 18 (in a total of 61 all out) and, having been promoted to open, an excellent 30 (out of 101 all out).[10]

In the following three seasons Foster could spare no time for cricket, apart from August 1905 (when he scored 246 on his first appearance[11]), but in 1907 he was able to find time to play regularly from the beginning of June. His batting was as good as ever in a summer of appalling wickets and helped Worcestershire (fourteenth of sixteen counties in 1906) to rise to equal second with Yorkshire. He captained England in the three-match series against South Africa in 1907, winning one match and drawing two. Offered the captaincy of the MCC for the 1907/1908 Ashes tour, Foster declined because business commitments were monopolising his attention.

After the Third Test of 1907 he could spare time for only two more first-class matches, one in 1910 (when he scored 133 against Yorkshire[12]) and one in 1912. However, in Saturday club cricket, he never lost his brilliance. In one club match in 1909 he scored 261 in just 75 minutes.

In football, Foster played as a forward for the Corinthians in the early 1900s.

He played five matches for England between 1900 and 1902, making his debut against Wales on 26 March 1900. In his second game, against Ireland at the Dell, Southampton, he scored two goals in a 3-0 victory, although only 8,000 saw this, his most distinguished performance. C. B. Fry played at full-back in the same game. Foster was awarded the captaincy against Wales in his final appearance on 3 March 1902, which ended in a 0-0 draw. During his short England career he scored three goals.

I don't know much about this set. Is the Brown Back designation to differentiate between the 1912 F & J Smith blue back set (which seems to have a light blue and dark blue variation) or are there more than one color of backs for the 1906 set?

The 1906 set is only brown-backed. The 1912 set is blue-backed. I am looking for only the 1906 set.

The 1906 Smith's (brown backs) is the rarer of the 3 earliest sets. The 1908 and 1912 sets are often confused. Both have blue print backs.

The 1908 have the designation "CUP TIE" on the reverse. The fronts of the 1912 have a thicker yellow frame line surrounding the photo.

I only have a couple of soccer cards but this is the only one that us close to being considered vintage. The condition looks like it came from the civil war.. But it's only from 58. It's my favorite of the options for a pele rookie.

Grades just popped today on the Tendulkar card. I've never even seen a cricket high lite I think but given this guys dominance in the sport I has to track down an early card of him. Glad BGS was able to slab it

Scooped up another 1992 Tendulkar card. This one is from South Africa. It's pretty hard to according to the sellers I've contacted over there. Like I've said before... I'm not a cricket fan but from what I understand.. This guy is the Michael Jordan of the sport. So I figured what the heck

Nice Carmelo sheet, Bill. I've been trying to build my pre-World Cup Olympic players collection.

Of the medal winners, Denmark's players are the most elusive to find.

I believe that, Copa! I can't imagine that there are a lot of items produced for a country with a reasonably low population.

Thanks on the comment on the sheet. I am very happy to own that. I just picked up a 1930 World Cup Champions card of José Leandro Andrade. I haven't seen much with him outside of postcards, so I am pleased to pick it up at a reasonable cost.

The Ft. Lauderdale Strikers had 3 b&w sets from the early 1980's. One is a bit more desirable that the other two.

The 1982 Tampa Bay Rowdies set is a bit hard to find complete.

You can still pick these sets up on ebay for about $10.

Not really vintage but figured IDE share these. This is the firs time psa graded a 1978 Maradona. The condition isn't that great but it's difficult to find in any condition

Interesting. Those Uruguayan cards are tough as hell to find. Yours looks very similar to a set I found a few years ago from Chocolatin Mercedes from 1930 as well. Don't have the soccer cards just boxing. About 40% of the cards in the album were forgeries :( but most of the soccer and boxing were genuine. Same tiny size and the backs look very similar to yours:

Here are some 1914-1915 Spanish cards and a 1912-13 (I think)

The Roma Forns is from 1912-1913 or the year after, I believe. 1913 is the last year that he played.

The others include team cards of Espana and Irun, as well as an action card of Armet and Belauste (played for Spain in their first Olympics)

These are some of the earliest Spanish cards that I have been able to put my hands on.

Hi! These are some items I picked up today and made me excited :)

The first two are Tinghäll cards of Ademir and Barbosa. Tinghälls were Swedish candy cards, and these were issued in 1950. I think they are really rare.

Ademir Marques de Menezes was one of the greatest players of the time, and highest scorer in the 1950 World Cup. I think this is the only card issued depicting Ademir:

Moacir Barbosa Nascimento was the goalkeeper of the 1950 World Cup Brazil team. He was also one of the greatest, but he had a tragic fate - his name is written in history as the man who made Brazil cry. He was considered as responsible for the most tragic loose of Brazil, this against Uruguay during the 1950 final, a match better known as "el Maracanaço".

Then I found also this. An example of the Swedish Record magazine, issued in 1958 with number 37. What makes this issue special, is the fact that in this issue one of the two Swedish 1958 rookie cards of Pele was offered as a hand-cut card. It is not impossible to find this card, for example on eBay, but this was the first time I saw a complete issue in such a good state with an uncut card.

I finally got the time to scan some new arrivals. I will probably present all here, so stop me if I get boring :)

I also started a blog at mysoccercards.com and I will try to upload my nicest cards there, as well as add information mostly about the cards. My ambition is to update it often, with cards I acquire or new cool info about cards that are already published.

Issued during 1974 in France, by Ageducatifs, this is Michel François Platini´s rookie card. Platini is the current president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), and he is -by many- considered as one of the best, if not the best, players of all time. He was a member of the French national team that won the 1984 European Championship, a tournament in which he was the top goalscorer and voted the best player. This card illustrates a young Platini from 1974 when he was currently playing with his first team, Nancy (Association Sportive Nancy-Lorraine), a French association football club based in Nancy, Lorraine.

These cards are getting rarer and rarer to find, and finding one that has never been glued to an album is almost impossible. I love this.

1902 WM Clarke & Son Ltd “Football Series” William ("Billy") Meredith

This is the rookie card of William “Billy” Meredith issued in 1902 by WM Clarke & Son Ltd as a part of the series called “Football Series”. Meredith is considered by many to be the first, or at least one of the very first, real football superstars. He was named as the most popular player of the league, in a competition held by Umpire magazine in 1904. It has been said that he combined playing style of George Best with the attitude of Cantona. He played for Manchester City and Manchester United and his long career (he retired when he was 52!) was an adventure that among else included a bribery scandal during 1905. He is considered to be one of the top 5 players ever that have played for Manchester United.

About this card: Clarkes was a Wills sister brand of cigarettes and they both did the same set of footballers, separately branded, in 1902, same photos, similar numbers. The Wills brand isn’t on the front of the Wills card whereas Clarkes is. The Clarkes have a single back whereas Wills have 2 types, albeit only one per card I believe. The Clarke’s cards are definitely scarcer. (Thank you James for the info above)

Beautiful discs Bill. I also got in the mail today a 1946 Monte Cudine Alfredo Di Stefano. Straight from Argentina.

Di Stefano´s rookie card has been widely considered to be a (beautiful) card issued by Detergentes Platin in 1950. In reality, few collectors know that already in 1946 - in his home country Argentina - a disc card of the young Alfredo Di Stefano was issued by Monte Cudine. It is extremely rare to find, especially in an acceptable condition.

At last, I got my hands on this sweet Maradona rookie card from 1977.

On 20 October 1976, just a few days before his 16th birthday, Diego Armando Maradona made his professional debut with Argentinos Juniors. He played there for 5 years, scoring 115 goals in 167 appearances before his extremely pricey transfer to Boca Juniors.

This disc card was issued in Argentina during 1977 and it is the very first card depicting Maradona. He was then only 16 years old. It is extremely rare.

Wow nice haul there. The 1978 Maradona was really tough to find a few months ago but they seem to coming out of the woodwork lately. I'm glad psa decided to finally start grading it. It took me about 6 months to finally convince them.

I am glad you did ;-) I have the one of those two on its way to PSA right now. it should probably grade 1 or 2 but I will be happy to have it authenticated. Can you please convince them start grading those Ageducatifs Platini also? I would really like to submit that :-)

Do you have a checklist for that set or a link to one if it's anywhere on the web. I created a partial checklist of the crack set based on images I found of the album. That wasn't enough.. So I had to get the card graded by bgs and added to their database. Then I sent the partial checklist, scans of the album a link to the bgs database and the card in a bgs slab to cross over. I enjoy assinine projects like that

WOW! OK, lets try to work something out for that Platini rookie then. It should be easier, since there are a lot of full albums for sale out there. I will do some research and drop you a message if I find a check-list. Another interesting card that PSA should start grading is the 1965 Tarjeton Crack Pele, but that should be a bit harder to find checklist for. I will check it out.

I don't have that pele card but know the kne you are talking about. It's a great looking card IMO and one of his cooler cards. I'll be happy to help. I love to see new issues get slabbed for some reason. I just picked up this 1978 Argentina Campeon Libro De Estampas Maradona that I'm going to try to get slabbed. Any idea which 78 card more rare?

The 1978 is of course a Topps recycle of its 1977 football [U.S.] design. I like how many different Topps designs were recycled into UK soccer cards over the years and will probably pick up a type or two of each.

My favourites from my recent pickups: the 1968 Cruyff rookie and a nice sample of the 1927 Dean rookie.
