End of the year PINBACK Extravaganza!!!

Ok Fellas...I've been posting a lot of pinback acquisitions and display photos lately...It's time for everyone to man up and post what you have. This isn't a competition, but rather a group share. No collection is too small or large. Any sport or non-sports pins are fair game and I encourage you to post display photos as well. I'll get us started with a win on ebay and the pics you have all seen of my displays.

Cheers,
Mike

Great thread Mike. I hope you are able to add more to your pin collection in the very near future. My collection is sort of in the dormant stage but here are a few of mine that I have photos to share.

Superb collection!

Hiya Mike - that's quite a collection!

I don't display pins right now and it's a minor focus for me.

This is the latest one I picked up at auction - I like anything from the old Brooklyn team.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1324181260

Here's the more generic Dodger pin - and as most know - they came in at least two sizes; 1 3/4" and 1 1/4" - I've never seen this pin in a larger size?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1324881454

stone193 12-30-2011 11:08 AM

I would hardly call this a "charm"

Also - just wanted to share this pic I found that shows - just about - the biggest pin back "charm" I've ever seen!

This was taken just before the opening of the 1924 WS between the Senators and the Giants. Two of the people in the photo were reported to be Senator players George Mogridge and Joe Martina. I would say Martina is on the far right and Mogridge is the 3rd from the right.

Mike, I love your table pic -- my (partial) inspiration years ago when I got started.

And, as always....Al trumps us all with his stuff. Incredible collection, Sir.
Also waiting for Andy to blow my meager little collection out of the water.

I wrapped up #3 of 7 shadowboxes (late-October) -- been meaning to post. Now is as good a time as any.

#4 well on its way.

Here's to a happy, healthy 2012, Everyone!

I posted this in the favorite picks of the year thread - I really like it - I've never seen it before I picked up this one; I think they were only referred to as "blue jays" for 2 yrs - and it was unofficial to the team and ML BB.

Phil,
Funny you should say that on the cameo pepsins as about half of the collection was mine . I wondered where the rest went when I sold them in REA in 2008. Doug ( hello Doug) was a little generous with the price estimate of 87,000. I believe I sold them for half of that around 42,000. Well again they went somewhere and we will have to wait and see who has them now. I had 30 good years with them and it was time to let them out into the world again!:D

These were inexpensive due to condition - tho I don't think one would have to shell out much to get them nrmt?

As many know - these are approximately 7/8" - these are the kind that we used to put on our caps way back in the dark ages.

Tho not a true pin back - I have no idea what this pin is? It appears to be some kind of "Dodger" HOF? And - perhaps - they gave these pins to the members that were elected?

I do like it - I believe it's a Balfour.

I agree Mike K.! Very nice grouping!

I was just saying that I never come across team pins bigger than 1 3/4" and you have some that are larger.

What's the size? They look something like 2 1/4"?

The crossed bat pin is what attracted me to them back around 1993. Thanx.

Mike R.
The larger pins are 3.5 inches. The only other ones that size I know of are the Cubs (with "Go Go" like the White Sox pin), a White Sox without the "Go Go", and another Dodger with blue letters instead of red. They are shown in Muchinsky's book, but I have never seen them for sale. Being a huge Cubs fan, I would love to have the large Cubs variety.

BTW, here is my year-end shameless plug:
I'm still looking for nice pinback examples of Johnny Vander Meer and Bob Feller. Help a fellow net54 collector out if you have anything that will feed my passion (addiction)!

I also threw in some circa 1969 Amazin' Mets pinbacks.

Nolan Ryan pinback study 1973-1993

5 Attachment(s)
Here are some of the pinbacks out of my advanced Nolan Ryan collection.

Of special note are the following rare Ryan pinbacks:

The giant 1973 Nolan Ryan button which was sold at So Cal's May Co. department store. $1.25 could have bought you this beauty in 1973. This is the only known example. Bonus points for the price tag that's still attached to the back.

The Ryan 3" button with the shade in his eyes is one of about 3 examples. This was briefly sold at Anaheim Stadium in 1974.

The Rangers era vendor pinbacks were worn by Arlington Stadium employees after Nolan got his 300th win, 5,000th strikeout and 7th no-hitter. These are all VERY tough.

The regional pinbacks featuring Nolan as an Astro and Ranger from Bristol, CT are extremely scarce.

The oddball Rangers era group of pinbacks are all very limited and challenging to find.

Once again, Happy New Year to all of you on net54!! Have a great 2012!

mjkm90 12-31-2011 05:25 PM

Very nice collection Scott. Thank you for posting it. I believe you really illustrate how there is something for everyone in pinbacks. It is a very interesting niche with limitless options for both the beginner and advanced collector. I particularly LOVE the unknown aspect (new discoveries from time to time) and the fact that it isn't about the grade. I for one will NEVER purchase a graded pin. It simply isn't worth the premium.

2 a very hard to find Yankees old Timers Day Crossed bats
3 a 1/14 cleveland indians crossed bats (just a little find of these over the last year or so)
4 a 1 1/4 Detroit Tigers pin with the ball on the bottom of the crossed bats

Babe Ruth Esso Boy's Club Pin

I know everyone is familiar with this pin - I picked them up cheap due to condition and - I believe - fear they're not real?

Here's a few:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325443904

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325443962

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325444212

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325444386

Two "key" features are telltale for spotting the fake:

1. The threads of the ball - on the real pin - touch the 'oval' Esso (dealer stations).

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...193/Pin2-2.jpg

2. The Font on the "R" in Ruth is different in the real vs. the reprint pin.

I don't have a fake - took this off of ebay - I wouldn't mind having a fake one but right now all of them are going for good money - and one of them is from a good seller - so - either the info I have is bad or they fool a lot of people?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325444631

Comparison of the real vs the fake with respect to the "R" font.

Real: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325444835

Fake: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...BabeEsso-1.jpg

Here's a cool pic of the Babe which was part of the promotion:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...g?t=1325444288

I picked up this companion piece - a stack of application forms:

MK 01-01-2012 02:06 PM

Al,
Thanks for the crossed bats pins photos. I will be looking for the red border Dodger large pin among others. The Detroit pin with the bats and ball upside down has got to be a very scarce misprint. There is a 1.75 inch Detroit crossed bats spelled "Detriot" that Muchinsky shows in his book. This is why collecting this group of pins is so much fun for me. Just when you think you have a checklist of all the pins, someone shows you one you never knew existed.

What a great thread this is. Thanks for starting it Mike, and to all who have shared their collections! :) So many terrific pins posted by all, and I really mean that. I never get tired of looking at the vast range of such beautiful pins. By all means, PLEASE keep posting!

Like I whined before, I simply missed the boat on pinbacks. :( It's just to late in the game for me to plunge in headfirst, as they're too many passionate collectors to try and compete with.

Henry Yee's auctions always have plenty of sweet pins and I've even set some snipes over the last few years, but I've never even come close! So I'm sticking with Baseball photography and the Beatles... for now. ;)

Well, at least I do have one nice pin that I always admired and picked it up several weeks ago from Bob McCann (who in my opinion is clearly one of ebay's best sellers of Baseball memorabilia).

O.K. as most know Im a big pin collector but I also like to try and find out as much information on them as possible. That is why I loved the picture posted by Stone193 on the 1924 washington pins. Great shot! Here are some pins that I love and dont post much but wanted to show. Then there are some in here that I would love to hear some other thoughts on.

1 Nelson fox mighty mites pin I was finally able to find out what this pin was all about so this mistery was solved.
Thanks to Dan B. who hooked me up with the original owner of it . He also gave me some great info.

2 Leo Durocher Deer Club Favorite there is also a charlie dressen pin the same
what the heck was The Deer Club? and where was it located? Maybe someone else out there has a good answer. The only thing I was able to come up with was it was maybe a hunting club.

3 Im for mantle Im for Maris 2 of the most Iconic pins to collect but here is my question. I have tracked these 2 pins for many years. Constantly hearing that they were sold at yankee stadium. I have never found one person who bought one at yankee stadium. Also if that was the case this pin wouldnt be so rare. There should be many more of them around shouldnt there? Also almost every last one of these pins over the last 6-7 years or as long as I have been tracking them on ebay has come out of California . I find that very strange!
Just some questions from a crazy pin collector!:eek:

How many of you have seen this pin?

Al,
My other Mets pins are the real common ones, Daily News pins and a few others.
But the originator of this thread asked for non sports also, so I will post some of my political collection tomorrow.

Mike..the only twp Waitkus day pins I recall seeing are the one in your collection and the one in Paul's book. Now that I say that Greg (sayhey24) may have one. Thanks for posting it :)

Hi Al,

With regard to the Mantle & Maris pins, I can add that I got mine approximately 20 years ago from long-time hobby pin guy Tom Reid and a friend of mine purchased both of his at Manny's across the street from the stadium in the 60's. Hope that helps.

Craig

Mike H.
Unless I overlooked it, I don't see the Waitkus Day pin in Paul's book. Did he put it in a section other than Special Day pins?
