November pickups
6 Attachment(s)
OK, so I'm a day early- sorry! Who has time tonight when I'm going to be busier than a one armed paper hanger passing out Halloween candy?
I don't yet have these in hand, but I just picked up 3 original snapshots of Jim Tobin's 2-0 no-hitter over the Brooklyn Dodgers at Braves Field on April 27, 1944. Three things make this game rather intriguing: 1) There were only 1,934 patrons in attendance on this raw April day in WWII era Boston. This ranks as the second lowest attended no-hit game in the modern era. Fortunately, one of the fans, Bill Scott, took the time to capture photos of the starting pitcher, Jim Tobin and his battery mate Phil Masi warming up along the sideline prior to the contest. The best photo shows a panoramic shot of the Braves team celebrating at home plate at the conclusion of the game. Look at the scant few patrons in the stands! This photo really does a great job of showing you how dreary the day actually was... 2) Jim Tobin became only the 2nd pitcher to ever homer in his own no-hit game. 3) These snapshots make great complimentary pieces to the only known surviving ticket stub to Tobin's gem that I own in my no-hit ticket collection. I never thought I would find any game photos to this game, but you just never know! |

Geez Scott. Those snapshots are awesome! You really are taking companion pieces to the next level. :)
Like you, I don't have these pieces in hand but they're on the way. Program and Ticket for The Royal World Premiere of The Beatles' Film - A Hard Day's Night The London Pavilion, Shaftesbury Avenue on Monday 6th July 1964 at 8.30pm. Attended by The Beatles, Princess Margaret and The Earl of Snowdon. And... the companion piece that I found from a seller in ANKARA, Turkey! Awesome Beatles early pieces, Jimmy!
A Beatles pickup from a seller in Turkey? That's just crazy!! That's what I call flipping some rocks...very cool! Isn't eBay unbelievable? As an occasional seller, I've sold things to people from all over the world. It always boggles my mind where collectors live. |
Very cool Scott! The photos with the stub really tell the story well...
|
Looks like every one of those fans poured onto the field! LOL

Randall, I'd have to agree. The crowd at Tobin's no-hitter even looks smaller than the one that actually witnessed Randy Johnson's 300th win in Washington! ;) |

Technically a late-October pickup.
The Granger/Mize piece fit perfectly in my nook. Thank you to Mark Clary for a perfect B/S/T transaction Cheers! |
Eagles pennant
Just got it in the mail this morning, and was thrilled to add this pennant to my Eagles collection. Its the only of its type I've ever seen.
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...lespennant.jpg |
Wow... never seen that one either (and I've seen a lot!)
Great pickup, Keith. I can only imagine how rare it is that you can add a new Eagles variation to your already abundant pennant collection  |

Six feet of a pickup!
I'm still waiting to get this one in hand, but it's a giant panoramic of the 1910 Red Sox and Washington teams, including Walter Johnson, Speaker, Wood, etc. Can't wait for this to arrive, but I need to find some space for it first! |

What a great looking Eagles pennant. Mike

Awesome pennant Keith. They played well the other night also.

Scott, I solved you space problem. Just bring it to the show Saturday and I'll put it in the bar in the basement.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Rawn |
Thanks for the comments on the panoramic to Rawn and Kingofclout - appreciate it!
Rawn - FYI, Bill Carrigan is 9th from the left end. And I would've brought it to give you on Saturday, but I can only make it on Friday now to the show - bummer! |
Scott, I can change plans. I'm in Fitchburg right now. I guessed 8th or 10th.

Thanks guys for the compliments.
Amazing panoramic photo Scott! Congrats on an outstanding pickup. |
Finally!!
Well after what seemed like a drought that lasted years, I finally bought something I really wanted.
1939 HOF Yearbook Inagural edition. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=4988 The seller of this book dated it to 1939 because of the date on the cover as well as the fact that Gehrig is NOT in this one. I need to update my previous thread about the HOF Yearbooks What I thought was a 1939 HOF yearbook, which was dated because Gehrig was in it, must be either a 1940 edition or a revised 1939 edition. I will wait until I have it in hand and inspect it before I will offer an opinion and close up scan. I feel like a addict who's been forced on the wagon and finally gets off it. WHEW! I thought the drought would never end. Some great additions by all. Best, Mark |
Great pick up Mark. Is always great to be able to fill in the holes in a collection.

BTW... a really important addition to your HoF Yearbook collection Mark. Well done my friend! |

Just picked up a 1961 Game 4 world series ticket. I had planned on getting all the 61 WS tickets at some point but this one (it's a bit rough but should display well and couldn't pass it up for the great price) is the one where Whitey Ford broke Babe Ruth's World Series scoreless innings record.

Tris Speaker

Was lucky enough to be able to add this Circa 1921 Tris Speaker 35 inch decal bat to my collection. Decal has survived in remarkable condition considering the age of the bat. I believe this was the last of the decal series produced by Hillerich and Bradsby at the beginning of the 1920's.

Agreed.... that Speaker Bat is a super pick-up. Very rare decal variation, and looks to be in great shape as well. Many congrats on that one!

Really psyched to add the Detroit Tigers mascot bank to complete the Stanford Pottery set. I know I know, I'm still missing the extremely elusive A's white elephant bank, but this is complete as far as I'm concerned ;)
Here's the team... |
Awesome, Brock!!! They look great all together. That looks to be a rare Indians variation- second from the right. Never seen that smaller one with the "C" on the Chest. Can you shed any light on that one?
Also... a guy at the National had the elusive A's Elephant (NRMT condition). It was still at his booth as of that Saturday... so that's probably one example that is circulating and available  |
Any boxing fans out there? Thought I'd chime in with this Jack Dempsey postcard autograph from his restaurant in the city.

He knows me and we’ve done business before…he said it was mine and told me a gal had come by earlier and told him she would come back at the end of the day and buy it….he asked her if she wanted him to hold it but she said no…So we closed the deal and agreed on the payment details…and all was good….about an hour later he called me back and said the gal came back to get it and he explained someone bought it…Phew that was close! The Lord blessed me on that deal!...In twenty three years it’s one of three antique motorcycle statues I’ve seen…The dealer once had a bronze one with one rider I passed on....I heard it went for big money up the food chain….and I saw another one at a show in L.A. once that sold really quick as the dealers were setting up…. By the way…at that show back in May…Though I passed on the motorcycle I did get the little die cut easel back sign of service men playing pool, see below...It's not a November pick up but what the hay.. 12" x 12" FYI Below are two other things I saw yesterday..that basketball is actually a propane tank....dealer said the U.K. is University of Kentucky and that someone painted to look like a basketball….dealer said he had another that was painted as a baseball…said he sold it and it ended up on 1st dibbs… the lower photos is speculated to be a store advertising display for the Rittgers statues…the little c1940 comical figures of various sports et al….It’s the baseball umpire…flat back hangs on the wall…about 18” tall…it was out there but it wasn’t cheap…It had my attention but I ended up passing...dealer said extremly rare..and I'm sure...quality was so good had to have been made by Rittgers..fiberglass inside |
Great stuff - wish I could participate, but all my pick-ups have been photographs, and I'll respect the 'non ML-er photographs are boring' aspect of this sub-forum.
If anyone calls me on this, I will prove my point...to the point of being even more obnoxious than I already am. :) |

The smaller Indian is sort of a mystery to me as well. It's not as big and also not a bank. It has no coin slot in the back feather where you would typically find it. If my memory serves correctly, I believe Rob D. has one like this as well. Maybe he knows more than I... And it's good to hear that there is at least one example of the A's bank floating around that might pop up for sale somewhere. Of course, finding one is only half the battle. Scrounging up the funds to pay for one is another matter all together. How many years did you have to wait for yours? I remember it being one of your long sought quests. |
You have quietly assembled a fantastic collection Brock. Congratulations!!! I may need to go after one of those Tiger examples. You "Brocked" the example you added last week:D

I had to wait about 7-8 years to finally add that damned Elephant (and paid a pretty penny, to do so). The one I saw at the National was priced about 25% less, was nearly as nice, and was a different variation. Mine says "Athletics" across the chest, and this one just has an "A". It had extremely minor shelf wear, limited to the bottom of base (not worthy of mention) and no chips, cracks, repairs or anything else. It's a beauty... I'm afraid to even guess what you paid for the Tiger (and won't look- so please don't tell me). I paid a fortune for mine about 9 years ago, when these things were at their peak (and thought to be exceedingly rare). It's one of those things that ebay has proven to be a bit more prevalent than originally thought. Congrats on adding yours- looks like a beauty! ps. There's still one more... the Indian with full head-dress. This one is possibly even rarer than the Elephant, and is as spectacular as it is rare. I've come to accept that I'll never own one... I think you'd have to spend well over $5K. Of course, if Lou Criscione is reading this, he can add his thoughts on rarity and value. |
Quote:
This is a great time to add the Tigers piece, if you are so inclined. The prices are as low as I can ever recall, and if the economy bounces back, these eventually will too. Plus, it's probably the best looking mascot of 'em all (IMHO ;)) |

Hi-
I recently acquired the Cobb snapshots (along with the Ruth I posted in the Bambino thread) shown below at the Wilmington MA card show. I really like the one where he is smiling, but the other two showing him at bat are really cool as well. I will be researching the games played later in the week. Alan Elefson aelefson@hotmail.com |

Thanks Scott! It was great to meet you at the show.

BTW, I've never seen the Detroit "D" in that font on Cobber's jersey in the last photo. Very cool! Any of you Detroit uniform experts know if this was a uniform that the Tigers wore for any length of time? I'm used to seeing the Old English D.... |
Very nice Alan! I'm sorry I missed you on Saturday...was stuck at the SGC booth : (
Hi Scott, I was previously trying to identify a Detroit Tigers player and one of the board members shared with me this excellent site. From the site, it looks like the Tigers wore this style uniform from 1918-1920. http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.o...ines/index.htm |

This is my first time ever seeing that exhibit. It's quite impressive. I have always been fascinated by Thorpe. The photo is the only item featuring him in my collection as I tend to stick to baseball. I seem to be buying a number of these photos lately. This one came in the mail today. I am not a football fan and I'm a 3rd generation Yankee hater. Nonetheless Don Larsen and the NY Giants together with the Stadium facade in the background was irresistible.

That's a gorgeous ball, and went very low - very nice pick-up. Boy, there were some nice autographed baseballs in Heritage tonight. Ruths galore.
I picked up a few cabinets in Heritage tonight - the KC Blues lot, the KC Blues large cabinet, the Pittsburgh lot, and a nice Springfield Ponies. These were my favorites: http://www.belltownvintage.com/Cabin...chingPitt.jpeg http://www.belltownvintage.com/Cabin...rCatching.jpeg |

I agree with Scott that that really is a great ball. Congrats on your pickup! BTW, Jimmie Reese was sure a great guy to know. For those of you that don't know this, Jimmie was famous for being one of Babe Ruth's roomies (1930-1931) when he played on the NY Yankees. He used to joke about the fact that he actually only roomed with the Babe's suitcase, but he never saw Ruth because he was always out on the town carousing...;) I personally got a chance to talk to Jimmie for many years as a season ticket holder with the California Angels, where he was an absolute wizard with a fungo bat all the way into his 90's. The things that he could do with that magic fungo bat would make your head spin! He was regarded as the most prolific fungo hitter in baseball history. To say that Jimmie Reese was an absolute baseball treasure is a major understatement. He had many friends throughout baseball in every city as Jimmie was involved in baseball for over 78 seasons. He broke into his baseball career as a batboy for the Los Angeles Angels of the PCL in 1917 and was on the Cal Angels payroll as a conditioning coach until he passed away at 93. I knew him well enough that I attended his funeral in Santa Ana, CA in 1994. The amount of active and retired baseball players in attendance was staggering; a true testiment to how many people he touched in his life! Not surprisingly he was extremely close with many of the players that played for the Cal Angels through the years. Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson and Jim Abbott were some of his personal favorites... In my own collection I have saved a number of special Jimmie Reese momentos. My most prized piece related to Jimmie is one of his fungo bats from the 1980's which he personally gave to me. I was also given all of his Christmas cards from the last couple of years that he was alive. Several of the letters that accompanied these were very personal and discussed baseball. Many years ago I was given a copy of the first audio interview of Nolan Ryan and Jimmie Reese in early 1972 when they first bonded. Here are a couple of other items that I saved in his memory: 1) A B/W signed photo of Jimmie in action in 1972 at Anaheim. This was the year that Jimmie joined the Angels coaching staff and Nolan joined the Angels after being traded by the NY Mets for Jim Fregosi. Nolan Ryan credits Jimmie as being influential in having him realize how hard he really needed to work to get into the physical condition to be a consistent winner in baseball. 2) A rather grainy photo (sorry, I'm not a great photographer) of Ryan and Jimmie catching up during batting practice and workout prior to the All Star game in Anaheim in 1989. Despite its lack of clarity, I do love this photo because it shows the enduring great friendship between Nolan and Jimmie Reese. As a side note, Nolan's 2nd born son was named Reese after Jimmie. That's my Ryan game used mitt from 1989 that Nolan is holding in the photo. I've shared photos of this mitt on net54 a couple of times. 3) The memorial program that I received when I attended his funeral in 1994 |

I've been watching weekly for years and have never seen a regular season stub come up again, seen plenty of World Series ones, but not regular season, so finally I have redeemed myself. (Very neat 1919 home schedule on the back) |

This jumbo panoramic postcard has always been an item that caught my eye, so I am extremely excited to add this very nice condition example to my collection. Included with the postcard were 2 ticket stubs. One for the Sox game against the Tigers on June 26 1911 where the original owner purchased the postcard, and one for the Cubs game the day before where they took on the Pirates. Makes me wonder if this guy purchased the West Side Park version of this postcard when he went to see the Cubbies?
