After a full month of negotiations, late yesterday afternoon I finally completed another HUGE trade. :D

I must say that it's a lot more fun then writing a check. ;)

Jimmy, Those are some photos, Congratulations!!...and I'm not even a photo guy...any images of a youthful Ruth in a RS uniform always get my attention though. Since they're not wire photos I'm assuming some civilian took them with their own personal camera? How often does something like this surface? How about the pursuit?....Can you share how you found them?....Since it was a trade I can deduct you didn't find them at the Goodwill!...Can you say what you gave up?...lets hear the gory details!

I'd like to thank each and every one of you who took the time to comment, you're all very kind. I've found that photographs provoke a certain emotion in me that is rarely found in other collectibles.

Each photo has captured a moment in the daily lives of the generations that proceeded us, and that transcends into any walk of life, be it Ball Players, Movie Stars, Politicians, and even fascinating folks from all walks of life.

Those Ruths are absolutely freaking AMAZING. Damn, I didn't think your Ruth collection could get much better, but I was so wrong. Congrats. What can you do to top these? A pic from St. Mary's perhaps!

It has been an incredibly slow month for me, so I'm glad people have stuff to post so I can live vicariously through them.

Thanks Carlton. I made a cash offer for these two photos last Nov once I saw them in person, but was denied. So for the last several months we stayed in touch but made no real progress until we opened up negotiations last month.

Not every collector are like you and I Carlton as we love to share our finds and the sometimes terrific stories of how we found them. But, I agreed to keep our details private as per a condition of our agreement.

And for as what I gave up for them, let's just say it was substantial and even included some non Baseball items.

I started collecting photos just over ten years ago as I couldn't afford the Ruth, Gehrig, DiMag, & Mantle Baseball Cards that I wanted, so I looked for an alternative and found vintage photos at a fraction of the cost. And since I was able to acquire multiple significant images over the years, I was armed with something that many fellow photo collectors considered better than money... the goods!

On another issue you mentioned on a post a few weeks ago... "where do I find all this stuff?" For many years I dreamed about hitting the road like you do Carlton, but I had chosen a different path and between an upside-down work schedule and a huge family commitment, my desire to travel and hunt for hidden gems remained just that, a dream.

The Internet and specialty auction houses changed my life forever. When I came home from work in the middle of the night, I found nothing to do except, eat, watch infomercials and/or rerun after rerun of Sports Center, or read.

Until 1999. when I bought a WebTV and discovered eBay. No need to go on from here. But I'll close with something that merits repeating. At least 80% of my collection was acquired via the Internet. Maybe even closer to 90%.

I just wanted stuff bad enough that I found away to get it!

I'll second what everyone else is saying - that Ruth Red Sox photo is great. I used to collect Ruth items back when I had $$, and two of my favorite items were a Burke photo and a silver gel 'snapshot' from a barnstorming tour. All gone...

On a more positive note, I picked up a huge (small) black baseball related item last week - a 1909 ticket book, including 7 tickets, for Niesen's Gunther Park in Chicago. Among the games played there that year: series between the Leland Giants and the Cubans, 1-0 game where Rube Foster beat Ed Reulbach and the Chicago Cubs, games between Leland's Giants and the Guenther team, and also games between the Guenthers and the Cubans. There might have been other famous black teams that also played there that year - I haven't completed my research. The Kansas City Giants played the Cubans in Chicago that year, in several parks, but I can't verify that they played at Guenther Park.

Still looking for RPPCs of either the 1911 Chicago Giants or 1911 Kansas City, KS, Giants.

Here’s my first pickups for October…Went to the Alameda Point show yesterday…I got the 1880’s baseball cap below…I initially saw it at the National last summer…I made an offer but the seller wasn’t ready to sell since he got it there at the National…Fortunatly the seller lives here in the bay area and sets up at the Monthly Alameda show…Last Alameda he shot me a price and I put down $300.00 to hold it and paid the balance yesterday…It's a very rare example of cap and kind of completes my collection of basic styles..I have the pillbox, boater, small bill Harvard cap, and now this striped one...which is the only one I've ever seen for sale...No makers tag but I got coaching from John Gennantonio and he gave it his stamp of approval as a style that was used for multiple sports as well as baseball...as seen by the 1886 Princeton baseball team photo under it

Plus got an interesting little 1924 team photo of the Tucson High School girls basketball team (Tucson AZ)….The names of the players are written by hand in ink on each player…along with the name of the coach…A few weeks ago I bought a girls basketball poster with a large illustration of a girl player for the 1929 Oakland Ca YWCA vs San Francisco YWCA…so this kind of goes along with it…

Nice score, Carlton!!! Especially the 1880s Cap. I really love the colors and design of that one. Has to the best (or one of the best) examples to exist... the condition looks impossibly good for something that early. What a neat piece (both inside and out).

Nice cleats as well.... never seen a pair quite that old, or that attracive. You're really on a roll- congrats!

Babe Ruth last win ticket
 

October is a tough month to post new pickups!

After Jimmy dropped that "nuclear bomb of all pickups" to kick off October (early Babe Ruth pitching photo and 1915 Red Sox hurlers), I'm happy to join the party in a small way. ;)

As a matching bookend to Jimmy's photo, I picked up a NMT ticket stub to the Babe's LAST ML pitching appearance and win on October 1, 1933. In Ruthian fashion, the Babe managed to show a crowd of 25,000 NY fans why he was, well, Babe Ruth...

In the last game of the 1933, and in the twilight of Ruth's career, Babe asked to pitch against the Yanks' arch rival Boston Red Sox. Ruth did the NY team proud, pitching a complete game and garnering a win for his effort. Additionally, Ruth hit his 34th and final homer of his 1933 campaign (career HR # 686).

As stated earlier, the ticket stub is in great shape. The patron that attended the game scribbled notes on the back of the ticket on who attended the game and when it occured.

Pretty cool! I'm including a scan of my stub and another photo of a Hunt's auction lot that sold last year with a lesser quality example of the same ticket for background info surrounding this game.

I picked this up for $4 at a local antique mall. It was marked "unknown baseball player" but his name was written on the back. It is Lyman Linde who pitched a whopping 10 innings for the Indians in '47-48. Not much of a player but a great photo.

That's a good question Mike. One of the best things about collecting photos is they hardly take up any room at all. Which is good for me as I live in an 830 sq ft loft, with one wall almost all glass, and another all brick. So I really have only one place for them... a cool, dry, pitch black vault. A perfect place to store and preserve a couple hundred photos.

And Chad, those are some terrific signed cards there. I've always loved vintage signed cards... especially Hall of Famers! Congrats to you Chad.

What a great stub Scott! When I first read your post, I thought that I had a matching photo from that game in my collection. But once I got to it, I had a little let down as my photo was from 1930 when Babe pitched the last game of the year against the Sox in Boston. Ah.. what a pair that would have been!

It's on the last page of my Brimfield trip story in which I visited Yale and photographed their trophies...scroll 1/2 way down the page in the link below.

Yesterday a very cool 18" x 9 5/8" felt banner featuring HD sold on eBay for $140.00, see below. I had this once very very early on in my collecting but sold it...one of the coolest banners...It's fairly rare, you don't see them often...but the print I got above is way more rare....first one I've ever seen.

This is a nice early "Pocket Kodak". When it was introduced in August of 1897 it was one of the first really pocketable cameras with a acceptable (for snap shooters) picture size. It also was a very successful camera, 200.000 being sold until its end in April 1915. The camera took 12 pictures with a size of 2.25 x 3.25 inch (5,5 x 8 cm) on one daylight loading spool. It cost $ 10.

A Sept. 1962 Beatles Original Photo by Les Chadwick of Peter Kaye Photography. This photo shoot was the first professional photographs ever taken of the Beatles.

Beatles manager Brian Epstein wanted photographs taken ASAP and hired a local Liverpool studio to shoot them. This image was used as the cover shot in Peter Kaye's 1987 paperback book entitled:

Here's the ultimate companion piece (for me, anyway...)

I've had the original Willard Mullin Illustration of the Bum for quite some time. A big/beautiful image of the infamous Brooklyn Mascot. But just recently I was lucky enough to find the original Sporting News issue in which this drawing was featured.

Icing on the Cake is that this drawing was used to grace the Cover. Aside from the great Mullin tie-in, the articles within this Sporting News Issue are very intriguing. Among other topics, it discusses Jackie Robinson's thriving career in the minors, and his chances of making the "Big Club". It also discusses the possibility of a 168 Game Regular Season Schedule (which apparently almost came to fruition).

Very interesting reading, and a purely lucky pickup for me ;)

Now, do any of you have any idea who the above batter is? Possibly Kubek? It almost looks like Pepitone, but I know for sure he wasn't with the Yanks in '60, and the images are definitely from that year. Or so my belief is.

Great stuff guys!!! Love this photo -1956 Type I that I just picked up. The soft focus on Mickey really accentuates the power that is about to be released. The photographer is Herbie Scharfman of INP and SI fame and the most interested fan in the stands (above and to the left of the flash gun) is Ike.

BEAUTIFUL photo - I've always loved that one. Great pick-up!

I have a sweet Babe Ruth/Lou Darvas original sketch that I've been searching for the Sporting News or the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper for ten years now with no luck yet. Your post has given me new hope!

I finally picked up this Harmon Killebrew pennant to go along with my Rod Carew from the same time frame. Both of these were tough for me to find so I was happy to track them down. I also picked up this Killebrew button still on the original card which I was happy to get as it is different from the other Killebrew I have from this series.

Thank you. I love collecting Minnesota Twins and Vikings stuff. With the maker of a lot of these items being from Minnesota (Wincraft) a lot of very cool items were sold either at the stadium or around the state.

Don Larsen 1956 Word Series perfect game complimentary piece

Nice pickup! That's a classic image...
I just picked up an excellent complimentary piece to your Don Larsen World Series perfect game photo.

This is an extremely rare Stadium Club pass from Larsen's World Series PG game 5. These are much tougher to find than a World Series ticket to this game, which is readily available. BTW, I've only seen one or two examples of the Stadium Pass to this game through the years. I'm happy to add this pass to the ticket stub that I have to this remarkable game in my no-hitter ticket collection.

I've never posted a scan of my Larsen WS game 5 ticket before. My favorite part of this ticket is the vintage fountain pen inscription on the back written by the patron that attended the event.
The inscription reads:
"Perfect Game" pitched by Don Larsen of the N.Y. Yankees. Mon. Oct. 8- 1956 5th game of Series"

I also included a celebration photo of Larsen and Berra storming off the field after the game.

Great finds. I picked up a bunch of old baseball postcards, and this photo of an 1892 team with a black player. The image is well-composed and it's a very clean albumen, but it's not as crystal-clear as some I have:

Pinball Machine...
 

Guys.............I picked this up last week. It's my first pinball machine and the exterior and the guts are in rough shape, but it has a well preserved playing field with fantastic graphics. It wouldn't be cost effective to refurbish the machine as they're typically not too valuable in working condition, so I'm just going to disassemble the playing field and make it into a wall hanging display piece. I have another one already hanging in my basement and this should look just as cool. The back glass was cool at one time, but a lot of the reverse painted graphics have flaked off. I might tackle that repainted project down the road at some point. Thanks for looking.........Matt

Guys............Hey. That 'garage' is actually the back warehouse at our body shop. My Dad does have a few early cars, with two of them from 1911, but that warehouse is generally used more for work related to the shop....however, my Dad is currently using that space while restoring his 1911 Kissel Kar that is in a million pieces. I'll post photos someday next year when it's completed. Thanks for the interest.......Matt

And I thought I was the only one who appreciated the space in that huge garage. (AND wanted to see the one hanging on the wall already!).

Here's my addition - I owned this game as a kid when my antique-collecting parents bought it for me. Years later we sold it. And then I started to miss it. So I was lucky enough to replace it this month - I wonder how many years will have to go by for me to forget this one is NOT the one I first owned.

I picked up this signed Notre Dame football at a local auction last weekend. It has 15 autographs on it. In doing a little research I think it is from 1957. I really don't know that much about it.

A few new autographs...
 

I'm not usually an autograph collector, but I have picked up a few recently...

1. George Detore autograph (played 33 games in the majors between 1930-31 and then in the PCL from the late 1930s to the mid 1940s). At the national this year, a smaller autograph authentication company, ACE, was giving out free autographs and my mom happened to pick it up. I had no idea who it was until I looked him up. I'd say hes a tough autograph!

2. Rugger Ardizoia (played in the PCL during the late 1930s and into the 1950s...Also, made a one game appearance during 1947 to pitch for the New York Yankees). I wrote to him and he was gracious enough to mail back a small note talking about playing in the PCL and against the Colored House of David.

3. Bill Holland autographed album page mentioning him as the first black pitcher to pitch at Yankee Stadium. His autograph is a real toughie and I'm glad to have a early Negro Leaguer that also pitched in Cuba during the
1920's.

Congrats to everyone on this thread for some great items.

I posted pics of the cover of this October pick up in another thread but just today I found this October thread (I'm a newbie!) so I thought I'd post a few of the inside pages of this magazine.

A great ad for an A's poster for 50c which was quite a bit back in 1911! I'll take 2 please!

These are just 3 pages in this thick magazine. It is filled with history including another ad page for 25c posters of individual players and it lists the players including Matty.

I was thinking of trying to order all 6 and was going to send $2 just to be fair! :D Hey c'mon, I'm only 100 years too late on the order!

I am fairly sure I once owned a single-player tintype from that team - I'll check it out when I get home and report back. If so, I can tell you what team it is.

I've been looking for a catcher figural for a while. This is an early National Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, N.Y. souvenir ashtray circa 1939 by K&O Novelties Company. They produced detailed bookends and figurines from gray metal or bronze from 1895 to 1939. Baseball Museum opened to the public in 1938 or 39 and the ashtray would have been a very early piece sold or presented at that time. Although this isn't a particularly large piece, I appreciate the detail and uniqueness of it. I've never seen another.

That catcher figural is a really cool piece -- as a collector of Hall of Fame souvenirs, I can tell you that I've never seen that piece.
