October 2011 Pickups
2 Attachment(s)
Well,
It's Midnight here in Indiana, so I thought I would start the October Pickup Thread. 2 New E98s which get me up to 92 different ones! Thanks to a couple fellow board members for these! |
PSA 6 - the black dot on his chin is killin' me though, haha

A few of these came during the week(technically september), but I was pretty busy this week, so I figured I'd just list 'em now. Some new HOFers for the collection. The Baker and Veeck I'm counting toward my rookies. And then another Mel Harder for the collection.. He's one of my all-time favorite Indians. Probably because he was friends with my grandfather, and he was the first professional base ball player I ever met..

Trae - think of it as him having a mole!
I hadn't bought a card over $200 in a looooong time. It's nice when there is a rare month I have wiggle room! One e104-2 w/ a nadja back, one cracker jack from Mark, and one e104-iii I cannot wait to get from Leon! Attachment 46642 Attachment 46643 Attachment 46644 |

Came in the mail today. I know it's not baseball, but somewhat baseball related, as he was famous for performing and popularizing "Casey at the Bat". I'm glad to add it to my collection...
|
My only T205. Wasn't sure whether to put it under October pickups or "my best card". It's both. :D

Brian, what card is that of Schang?
|
1 Attachment(s)
With the economy dragging and the collectible market soft, cards which once sold for quite a bit are available at low prices. Prices on D310s are about 1/3 of what they were in similar condition a coupe of years ago.
|
Love that schang, brian. Some of those d310's went for 1/8 -1/10th what they were going for a few years ago!

Picked up another postcard for my growing collection. Thanks to Brian Van Horn for selling me this one!
|
dabigyankeeman,
The card is a 1921 self developing card of Schang. Leon has or had one of Alexander from the series. Thank You for your inquiry. Also, Peter, Thank You for the compliment. Here is a link about the set: http://www.oldcardboard.com/w/1921-s...cardsetID=1250 Thank You, Brian |

As a Clevelander, I've been wanting this one for a while. Finally found one for a somewhat reasonable price. Brookside park was notable for once holding the record for largest attendance at a baseball game in 1914. I've never seen a confirmed number, but have heard anywhere from 105,000 to 150,000. Postmarked Jan 1910.

This just arrived from last week's Sterling Auction:
http://www.sterlingsportsauctions.co...ept067_lg.jpeg I have to say I'm very impressed with Sterling. They sent my invoice the day after the auction, they take Paypal, and I now have my winnings 6 days after the auction!:D Steve |

Michael- How did you know it was that very quarter Ruth had in his pocket? You must be Kreskin or something!!
Brian- thanks for showing that cabinet photo. If you ever want to get rid of it, it would go nicely with the pins :). |
Leon- Hopefully a 1932 "S"!!!!

Picked this one up IN PERSON from fellow board member Jim F. Jim is the first member I have met in person! It was pretty cool picking up a Ty Cobb card on my way to work today in Toronto. This is my first vintage Cobb and I love it!

Completed my basic T206 Rube Waddell back run by acquiring a Sov350 Throwing. Now I need to look into factory variations. I will post pics in a separate thread of the whole bunch once I get all the scans together.

Jeff, really nice pickup.

Saw that piece in Chicago and was told it was an auction display item. I don't recall it actually making it into the auction though. How did you get it? |

long story... I'll PM you Phil. |
Major find, the Chattanooga Tenn find of Oct 2011
We can call it the Chattanooga Tenn find of October 2011.
A total of 350 cards which included 19 different Mino backs including Cobb & Mathewson, and 23 different D303 General baking cards including Mathewson & Wagner, and seven D304 General Baking including Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, Crawford, Chase and a cut Evers. There was also a lot of Kottons, over 200 Coupon cards and one Hindu Bresnahan and one Peoples Virginia extra. Here are some images of the find: https://www.gfg.com/images/minof.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/minob.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/d304.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/d3031f.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/d3031b.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/d3032f.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/d3032b.jpg
https://www.gfg.com/images/chasevirginiaextra.jpg Also, had a small Cracker Jack deal, but it did have Cobb & Jackson in there: https://www.gfg.com/images/jackson.JPG
https://www.gfg.com/images/cjfront.jpg
All deals come with a story so here is this one briefly. I did get a call some time ago from a woman who mentioned a difficult card that she said was donated for a silent auction and she wanted information and help with pricing. I gave her what she wanted, and did not hear back from her. Then, about a month or two ago or so, I got an email from her asking about cards with a mino back, once again, I gave her some information but did not hear back. About two weeks ago, she contacts me and asks if I would be interested in some General Baking cards as well as some Coupon cards, I said of course and her husband and I worked out a price. Apparently, they were his grandfathers cards who was born around 1901 so I assume he collected them as a kid. He later told me that when they found them after he died about 10 years ago, they were all in a paper bag. His wife actually found my site about 10 years ago, but never called until this year. They had previously given these cards to their son, but when he went to school, he gave them back recently and they decided to sell them. Back to the story, once we agreed on a price, he mentioned he still had some cards that his wife did not tell me about, I remembered the email and asked about it and if he had any Mino back cards, to which he replied he did, as well as cottons, and some T207 cards with anonymous backs including a Lewis! We agreed on a price on all of those cards as well, and I flew back last Thursday to pick them up. He held out on me a little, they would not sell me the Kotton Wagner and Plank they had, they said those were the two cards the son wanted to keep. The Cracker Jack Cobb & Jackson was a separate deal that started to happen at about the same time, and I just got the bulk of those in the mail today, got the Jackson last week. Well, thats the story, I will probably shoot a little youtube video about it, some of you have probably already seen some of my videos, you can link to them from my site. Most of the cards are out to SGC, some are sold, but still have lots left if you want to contact me. Thanks for looking Dave's Vintage Baseball Cards gfg@gfg.com |
That's insane, David. Congrats!
|
Congrats on the Find, Dave !
Cool find, Dave. I would have joined you on that road trip as I live about an hour and a half from Chattanooga...

Glenn just showed up in my mailbox five minutes ago. I just had to get him after falling in love with those little "movement" lines on the falling mask in a thread last week. The Diamond Stars set is beautiful.

We all like to bash eBay but..................I recently purchased all three of these Cobb's "raw" on the Bay. Tonight, I'm a happy camper (despite the best efforts of Jim with his "biggest regret" thread ). The T206 Cobb has a back stamp but who cares, it's really nice.
Truth be told, I purchased the Cobb because of the back stamp. It states "Property of the Republic of Cuba," that is way cool when you happen to be born on that tiny island. Lovely Day... |

...and my e145 cicotte...the e107s will be framed and the cicotte will be framed in the final cj display with 12-15 other cards. W/ the day off today I think I wil dust my displays and find some temporary spots until I get my display.
|
great e107's!

Thanks Jeff. The Davis presents much nicer in person than it did in scans and we, yes my wife and I, were pretty excited about them both...she got to open the package for once.
